How to Stream Vertical Video to YouTube with Astra Streaming Studio

Astra can send an RTMP stream to YouTube, but its published listing does not confirm a 9:16 output mode. Here’s how to connect it and verify the vertical feed before going live.

You can send a live feed from Astra Streaming Studio on Android to YouTube using the RTMP server address and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. But the app’s published listing does not confirm a portrait 9:16 canvas or support for YouTube’s vertical dual-stream setup. Before relying on Astra for a vertical broadcast, check YouTube Studio’s incoming preview and confirm that the vertical presentation is actually available.

Before you start

  • Use an Android device with Astra Streaming Studio installed. Its Google Play listing describes H.264/AAC encoding, RTMP and RTMPS streaming, and live camera and screen capture. The listing reports an update dated 31 October 2023; it does not document a dedicated 9:16 output control. Check the Astra Streaming Studio listing on Google Play.
  • Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s current guidance also sets 16 as the minimum age for live streaming. See YouTube’s live-streaming guidance.
  • Have a stable internet connection and frame your subject for the format you intend to send. A landscape source cropped to portrait can cut off people, gameplay, or on-screen text near the sides.

Set up an Astra stream to YouTube

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or select a live stream and locate the current stream’s ingest/server address and stream key. Use the values displayed for that session; do not reuse a key unless YouTube shows it as the active key.
  2. Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel. Do not show it on-screen or share it in chat, a post, or a recording.
  3. Configure the destination in Astra Streaming Studio. Add a streaming destination, select RTMP, and enter the server address and stream key from YouTube. An independent walkthrough published on 4 August 2026 describes this general connection flow, but exact app labels can change. Read the Android-to-YouTube setup walkthrough.
  4. Choose the source in Astra. Select the camera or screen capture you intend to broadcast, then start the configured stream in the app. Astra’s published listing establishes RTMP/RTMPS and capture capabilities, but not a specific portrait-canvas setting.
  5. Check YouTube Studio before going public. Wait for the incoming preview and confirm the feed is arriving. If vertical viewing is essential, verify that YouTube shows a vertical preview or the expected vertical layout; an upright phone orientation alone does not prove that Astra is sending a compatible vertical feed.
  6. Start the broadcast only after checking the result. If the preview is missing, incorrectly framed, or only landscape, stop and adjust the source or choose YouTube’s documented vertical workflow rather than assuming Astra will convert the feed.

Can Astra produce a YouTube vertical live stream?

The available Astra listing confirms RTMP/RTMPS streaming and capture features, but it does not state that the current app provides a native 9:16 canvas, a dedicated YouTube vertical stream key, or compatibility with YouTube’s dual-stream encoder workflow. The setup walkthrough is useful for connecting an Android app to YouTube, not proof that Astra creates a Shorts-feed vertical broadcast. No end-to-end compatibility result is established here. Confirm the actual vertical preview in YouTube Studio before depending on this setup.

Use YouTube’s vertical or dual-format workflow when needed

Vertical presentation through Live Control Room

YouTube says Live Control Room streams default to simultaneous 16:9 horizontal and 9:16 vertical formats. The vertical version defaults to a center crop; YouTube also documents fit-to-phone-width and stacked layouts. You can edit these layouts before going live, and adjust them during a stream if you created the stream through YouTube’s editing canvas. Check that the crop keeps important subjects and text in frame.

Dual streaming from an encoder

YouTube’s encoder route uses RTMP(S) and a second stream key for the vertical feed. Set up both streams before the broadcast and send the matching format to each key: YouTube says the vertical format cannot be added after a stream has started. Astra’s listing does not establish that it can send this two-key arrangement, so verify the app’s current controls before choosing it for a dual-format broadcast.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What viewers see, and what vertical mode lacks

  • Viewers using the Shorts feed on mobile see the vertical version; other viewers see the horizontal version.
  • The two presentations share the same URL and live chat.
  • YouTube says vertical lives can be discovered in the Shorts feed and support memberships. They do not support clickable links in chat or the channel description, pre-roll or mid-roll live ads, or 4K bitrate streaming on the YouTube app.
  • Live Control Room provides combined metrics; vertical-only metrics become available 24 hours later.

Choose a framing approach before going live

Need Practical choice What to verify
Only a mobile vertical audience Use a genuine 9:16 source or a YouTube vertical layout. Confirm a vertical preview and check that the subject and text fit the frame.
Both mobile Shorts viewers and landscape desktop or TV viewers Use YouTube’s dual-format approach, either through Live Control Room or a compatible encoder setup. For an encoder, confirm it can send both required formats and keys before starting.
One Astra feed with uncertain portrait support Test with a private or otherwise controlled setup before scheduling a public vertical broadcast. Do not treat phone orientation or an RTMP connection as confirmation of vertical-output support.

Troubleshooting

YouTube does not receive the stream

  • Recheck the server address and stream key against the active YouTube Studio session; a typo or stale key can prevent the connection.
  • Confirm Astra is configured for RTMP and that the network is allowing the app to send data.
  • Look for the incoming-feed status in Live Control Room before trying to go public.

The feed arrives, but it is not vertical

  • Check the YouTube preview rather than relying on how the phone is held.
  • Look for a vertical layout in YouTube’s Live Control Room, or use a compatible dual-stream encoder configured before broadcast.
  • If Astra has no usable portrait output or second-key controls, use a different verified workflow for the vertical stream.

The portrait crop cuts off important content

  • Move the subject and essential text toward the center-safe area, or use a YouTube layout such as fit-to-phone-width or stacked where appropriate.
  • Recheck the preview after every layout change. A wide scene may not translate cleanly to a narrow vertical frame.

The vertical version is missing from a dual-format setup

  • Confirm the vertical stream was configured before going live; YouTube does not allow adding the vertical format after a stream has started.
  • Check that the vertical key is paired with a vertical feed, not the horizontal output.
  • Verify Astra supports the required two-stream arrangement before relying on it.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded videos rather than a live camera or phone capture, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. The same flat price per slot applies to any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers; StreamNeo also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. Start your free StreamNeo day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will streaming in portrait automatically put my broadcast in the YouTube Shorts feed?
