If the Night Hunter is pursuing you, try moving toward a lit area—but treat this as a player-reported tactic, not a guaranteed way to break pursuit. Use hiding and upgrades to buy time, and coordinate with teammates if you are playing co-op. Red Barrels’ published notes do not establish a universal Night Hunter counter or spell out its current detection and disengagement rules.

What to do when the Night Hunter spots you

Try moving toward light

A player tip recommends seeking a lit area when the Night Hunter pursues you. You can try changing your route toward light, but the advice is anecdotal: it does not prove that light makes the enemy lose sight of you or stop chasing. Treat it as an opportunity to reposition, not a guaranteed escape. The player discussion is the basis for this suggestion.

Break contact if you can

If the route is unsafe or moving toward light does not help, look for a chance to hide and create breathing room. The available sources do not confirm exactly when the Night Hunter gives up, so avoid relying on a fixed waiting period or assuming that any hiding spot will end the encounter.

Use hiding and upgrades for breathing room

Red Barrels’ March 2024 1.0 notes describe two upgrades relevant to hiding, though neither is presented as a guaranteed Night Hunter counter:

  • Invisible: The notes say enemies will not find a player in a hiding spot, even if the player peeks. This is a general upgrade description; it does not establish how the Night Hunter behaves in every current situation.
  • Hide and Restore: The notes say hiding accelerates Rig cooldown recovery. This can help restore utility while you are concealed, but it does not itself establish that the Night Hunter has disengaged.

Read the upgrade descriptions as tools for managing risk and recovery, not as proof that a particular enemy encounter is solved. Red Barrels’ 1.0 notes are the source for these effects.

Coordinate with teammates in co-op

The Outlast Trials supports cooperative PvE play. The developer describes the cooperative format as accommodating up to four players in a July 2024 feature. If you are in a group, communicate when the Night Hunter is nearby, share which routes look safer, and avoid leaving teammates without a clear plan. These are general coordination suggestions; the available sources do not verify a Night Hunter-specific team strategy. PlayStation.Blog’s developer feature describes the cooperative format.

What is not confirmed about the Night Hunter

The official material reviewed does not establish the Night Hunter’s current detection radius, how long it tracks a player, its spawn conditions, or the precise condition that makes it stop pursuing. It also does not confirm that the enemy cannot see players in lit areas. Avoid basing a plan on a specific range, timer, or supposed guaranteed counter.

The game continues to receive updates: Red Barrels’ support archive lists updates through September 2026, and its Season 7 notes include a control change involving X-Ray and Night Vision. That shows that game details can evolve; it does not show that Season 7 changed the Night Hunter. Check the official update archive and Season 7 patch notes for published changes, without assuming they confirm this enemy’s behavior.

If a tactic does not work

  • Do not assume reaching light must end the pursuit; the recommendation is player advice, not a documented rule.
  • Try a different route or a hiding opportunity rather than waiting for an unverified timer.
  • Use Hide and Restore for its documented Rig cooldown benefit, not as proof that the enemy has stopped tracking you.
  • In co-op, update teammates about the threat and your route so they can adapt with you.

Player discussions also use terms such as “counter” when asking about the Night Hunter, but that wording does not establish a reliable counter. One discussion illustrates that player terminology.
