To switch between Naoe and Yasuke in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, open your inventory and select Switch Character. The option becomes available in the open world after the protagonists are united; if it is greyed out, you cannot switch in your current situation.
How to switch between Naoe and Yasuke
- Open the inventory.
- Select Switch Character when the option is available.

When character switching unlocks
You cannot switch between the protagonists from the outset. Game director Benoit said in an Xbox Wire interview that players can switch between Yasuke and Naoe “at any moment in the open world, once they are united.” Xbox Wire’s interview with the game director

What a greyed-out Switch Character option means
A greyed-out option means the game does not currently allow a character change. Ubisoft’s update notes confirm this behavior but do not list every story or gameplay situation that disables switching. If you have not yet united Naoe and Yasuke, continue the main progression; otherwise, return to the open world and check the inventory again when the option becomes available.

Consider the route and traversal you want, rather than treating character choice as a universal mission rule. Ubisoft’s parkour overview says Naoe can jump farther and reach higher, while Yasuke is generally slower on rooftops.
