What the character wheel does
Grand Theft Auto V Story Mode lets you move between its available protagonists without returning to a menu. The game displays a character wheel while you hold the switch input. You then highlight an available character and let go of the input to confirm.

There are three parts to the action:
- Hold the switch command. Holding keeps the wheel open.
- Highlight an available character. On a controller, move the right stick while continuing to hold the switch command.
- Release the switch command. Releasing confirms the character that is highlighted at that moment.
If you release too soon, the wheel can close before you make a selection. If you move the selector to the wrong portrait and then release, the game confirms that highlighted choice. Treat the command as one continuous hold rather than three unrelated button presses.
Rockstar Games Customer Support identifies the default switch input in its guidance for recording clips and opening the Rockstar Editor, updated April 26, 2024. A separate Story Mode support article also refers to opening the Character Wheel with the controller’s Down input. Together, those references establish which command opens the wheel; the platform procedures below explain how to use it.
Before you try to switch
Check these basics before troubleshooting a missing wheel:
- Be in Story Mode. The protagonist wheel is not the Online character-management screen.
- Know which device is currently sending input. A keyboard uses the keyboard binding; a controller uses the controller binding.
- Use the command shown in your current control settings if you have remapped buttons or keys.
- Plan to keep the command held until the desired character is highlighted and you are ready to confirm.
These checks matter most on PC, where the game may receive input from either a keyboard or a connected controller. Connecting a controller does not mean the keyboard command remains the active way to switch; use the command for the device you are actually operating.

The meaningful comparison is input type, not console brand. PlayStation and Xbox controllers use the same default D-pad direction, and a controller connected to a PC follows that same controller command. The keyboard alternative is different: the default is Alt.
These are the default bindings. If you changed controls, the command may be assigned to another key or button. The control name to look for is usually Switch Characters or a closely related label in the game’s control settings.
How to switch on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5
Step-by-step
- Confirm that you are playing Story Mode, not an Online session.
- Press and hold Down on the D-pad. A character wheel appears while the input is held.
- Keep holding Down and move the right stick toward the protagonist you want to use. The secondary guide published by GTA World News on September 5, 2026, corroborates this highlight gesture.
- When the desired character is highlighted, release Down. The game switches to that available Story Mode character.
The important timing is hold, highlight, release. Tapping Down and letting go immediately may close the wheel before you have selected anyone. Keep your thumb on Down while using the other stick; releasing the D-pad is the confirmation action.

If you use a different controller on PlayStation
Third-party controllers can expose the same D-pad command differently, and a remapped PlayStation layout can change the physical button you need to press. Use the binding shown in the game’s control settings rather than relying on the printed location of a button. The command still needs to be held while the wheel is open.
If the wheel opens but the selection does not move, keep Down held and make a deliberate movement with the right stick. Releasing Down before the highlight reaches the intended portrait confirms whatever is currently selected.
How to switch on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S
Step-by-step
- Enter Story Mode and make sure an Online character-management screen is not open.
- Press and hold Down on the D-pad on the Xbox controller.
- While continuing to hold Down, use the right stick to highlight the available protagonist you want.
- Release Down to confirm the highlighted choice.
Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S use the same default switch input. The console generation does not change the basic wheel operation; the input type is what matters. A Series controller and an Xbox One controller therefore follow the same hold-and-release sequence.
As on PlayStation, do not treat Down as a quick toggle. Hold it long enough for the wheel to stay visible, make the selection with the right stick, and release only after the correct character is highlighted.
Using an Xbox controller on PC
If you play the PC edition with an Xbox-style controller, follow the controller sequence rather than the keyboard sequence: hold Down on the D-pad, highlight with the right stick, and release. Connecting a controller does not automatically make Alt the active switch command.
If the game is showing keyboard prompts while you are holding the controller, first verify that the PC recognizes the controller as the active input device. Then check the Switch Characters binding in Settings. The default remains D-pad Down for controller use, but a custom profile can change it.
How to switch on PC with a keyboard
Step-by-step
- Load Story Mode.
- Press and hold Alt, the documented default keyboard command.
- Keep the key held while the Switch Characters wheel is visible.
- Use your configured keyboard or mouse navigation to highlight an available protagonist.
- Release Alt after the correct character is highlighted.
The key itself is not the confirmation by tapping. Alt has to remain depressed through the wheel and the selection step. Release it only when the intended character is highlighted.
Keyboard layouts and custom bindings can vary, so the on-screen prompt and the command listed in Settings are more reliable than assuming every PC installation uses the same key. If Alt does nothing, check the binding before changing other controls.

PC players who switch between keyboard and controller
The game can use different input schemes depending on which device is active. With a keyboard, the default is Alt. With a controller connected to the PC, the default is Down on the D-pad. If you change devices during play, use the command for the device currently receiving input and verify that the game recognizes it.
A common mistake is to press Alt while holding a controller and conclude that character switching is broken. Another is to press D-pad Down on a controller that is not being detected, while the game is waiting for keyboard input. Identify the active device first, then apply the matching default.
Story Mode and GTA Online are separate systems
The wheel described above is for switching Story Mode protagonists. It is not a shortcut for changing the avatars associated with your GTA Online account.

Rockstar’s Story Mode purchase guidance refers to opening the Character Wheel to select a Story Mode character. Its separate character-management documentation for GTA Online discusses Online characters and distinguishes Enhanced and Legacy versions. Those are different flows from the in-game protagonist wheel.
What to do when you mean GTA Online
If your goal is to use a different GTA Online character, use the character-management options provided by the Online version you are running. Do not hold Down or Alt expecting the Story Mode wheel to list your Online avatars. The wheel’s available choices are Story Mode protagonists.
This distinction also explains why an Online session can appear to ignore the switch command: the control is being used in a mode where the Story Mode protagonist wheel is not the relevant character-management tool. Returning to Story Mode changes the context; it does not transfer or alter your Online characters.
Enhanced and Legacy Online documentation should be followed for the version you own. The fact that Rockstar lists those versions separately is another reason not to treat the Story Mode wheel as an account-level character selector.
When the wheel does not appear
Work through these checks in order. They address the causes established by Rockstar’s control guidance without assuming a particular mission or wanted-level restriction.

- Verify the mode. Pause and confirm that you are in Story Mode. Online character management does not use the protagonist wheel.
- Check the active input device. On a keyboard, test Alt. On a controller, test Down on the D-pad. If you are on PC, make sure the game is receiving input from the device you intend to use.
- Hold the command. The wheel is opened by holding the switch input. A quick tap can fail to display it or close it before selection.
- Inspect the binding. Open the game’s Settings or Controls screen and find the Switch Characters command. A customized binding overrides the documented defaults.
- Test the selection gesture. On a controller, keep the switch input held while moving the right stick. Releasing the switch input confirms the highlighted choice.
- Try again after returning to ordinary play. If a prompt, cutscene, menu, or other temporary game state is covering the screen, close it and retry from normal third-person gameplay.
- Confirm that the controller itself is responding. Test another ordinary controller input. If the game does not react to the D-pad or right stick elsewhere, the issue may be input recognition rather than the character wheel command.
- Remove ambiguity from mixed inputs. On PC, temporarily use only the keyboard or only the controller so you can confirm which binding the game is reading.
Rockstar’s reviewed support pages do not publish an exhaustive list of every situation that can restrict character switching. Therefore, a failed attempt should not be diagnosed automatically as a specific mission, wanted-level, or other lockout unless the game itself provides that explanation. First confirm Story Mode and the configured binding.

How the platform procedures compare
There is no separate PlayStation-only or Xbox-only character-wheel mechanic in the documented defaults. PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S all use D-pad Down on a controller. Their shared procedure is:
- Hold Down.
- Move the right stick to highlight an available Story Mode character.
- Release Down.
PC has two possible paths. A keyboard uses Alt by default, while a controller connected to the PC uses D-pad Down. That makes the PC edition more dependent on the device selected and on custom bindings. The game’s settings are the authority if your setup differs from the defaults.
