Ore Excavation is a Minecraft Java Edition utility that mines a connected vein, fells a connected group of logs, or performs another eligible tool action in one operation. Install the build matching your Minecraft version and Forge or NeoForge loader, choose the mod’s key in Options → Controls, then hold a valid tool while breaking one eligible block. The mod applies its configured size, distance, speed, cost, grouping, and block/tool rules to the connected search. Start with a small test vein so you can check drops, durability, hunger, server rules, and performance before increasing the limits.

What Ore Excavation does

Ore Excavation automates a repeated tool action. Instead of mining every connected ore block individually, you activate the excavation action and break one valid starting block. The mod searches for connected blocks that satisfy its rules and processes them together. The same idea can be used for tree cutting and other tool-based bulk actions, depending on the configuration and the release you installed.

The project advertises controls for excavation speed, maximum size, search distance, cost, eligible tools, eligible blocks, grouping, and blacklist or whitelist behavior. It also advertises an undo command, an in-game configuration that can be changed without a restart or reload, per-client controls, per-tool overrides for pack developers, and a TPS guard intended to reduce server-impactful operations. The exact labels and available options can vary between releases, so treat the configuration screen in your installed build as authoritative.

What it does not mean

  • It does not automatically mine every block of a material across a cave or dimension. The operation follows connected-block and configuration rules.
  • It is not a replacement for a compatible mod loader. A file built for Forge will not become a NeoForge build merely because both loaders use the same game version.
  • It is not the same project as Create Ore Excavation, which adds machines and hidden infinite ore veins rather than simply mining a connected cluster.

Check compatibility before installing

Ore Excavation targets Minecraft Java Edition. Published project listings identify Forge and NeoForge builds spanning Java Edition 1.20.1–1.20.2, 1.20.4, 1.20.6, and 1.21. Those listings are release-dependent: a version number in that range does not guarantee that every loader build exists for every patch. Check the project’s current release page immediately before installing and match all three parts of the file to your instance:

Item What must match Why it matters
Minecraft edition Java Edition The published project is a Java mod, not a Bedrock add-on.
Game version The exact version listed by the selected mod file, such as 1.20.1 or 1.21 Even nearby patch versions can require different builds or dependencies.
Loader Forge or NeoForge, exactly as listed Loader APIs and mod metadata must agree with the launcher instance.
Environment Client, server, or both as required by your setup The project is listed for client and server use, but a multiplayer installation still needs matching files and loaders.

Install Ore Excavation in a Java instance

  1. Identify the instance. In your launcher or modpack manager, note the Minecraft version and whether it runs Forge or NeoForge. Do not copy a 1.21 file into a 1.20.1 instance or mix loader families.
  2. Use a trusted project listing. Select the Ore Excavation file whose game version and loader match the instance. Read that release’s dependency and environment notes; project files and supported versions change over time.
  3. Place the file in the instance’s mods set. Follow the normal workflow for your launcher or modpack manager. For a manually managed instance, the mod JAR belongs in that instance’s mods folder, not in the vanilla game’s resource-pack folder.
  4. Launch and verify the load. Open the mod list or title-screen information supplied by your loader and confirm that Ore Excavation is present. If the game fails before the world opens, remove the newly added file, read the loader’s error for a version or dependency mismatch, and install the build that matches the reported requirement.
  5. Make a test world or a copy of an existing one. A small controlled area lets you check behavior without risking a valuable tool, a large build, or a multiplayer base.

Activate a vein-mining operation

The key is configurable, and its default can differ by release or conflict with another mod. Always inspect the Controls screen instead of assuming a particular keyboard key.

  1. Start a world with the compatible Ore Excavation build enabled.
  2. Open Options → Controls.
  3. Find the Ore Excavation excavation, vein-mining, or similarly named action. The exact wording can change between versions.
  4. Assign an unused key. Resolve any conflict shown by the controls menu, especially if the same key is used for another hold action.
  5. Place a valid tool in your active hand. A pickaxe is the normal choice for eligible stone ores; an axe is typical for logs. The mod’s tool rules, not the tool’s appearance alone, determine eligibility.
  6. Look at a small connected target, hold the excavation key, and break one eligible block while continuing to hold the key through the interaction.
  7. Watch the result. The connected blocks that pass the current grouping, size, distance, cost, blacklist or whitelist, and speed rules should be processed as one operation.
  8. Collect the drops and inspect the tool’s durability and your hunger or exhaustion. If the outcome is unexpected, stop and adjust one setting at a time rather than testing on a huge vein.

If the action works on one block but not another, the difference is usually eligibility: the block may not be in the active list, the tool may be excluded, the blocks may not be connected according to the selected grouping shape, or a maximum size, distance, or cost limit may have been reached.

Understand the settings that control each excavation

Use the mod’s in-game configuration screen when it is provided by your release. Ore Excavation advertises changes that apply without restarting or reloading, which makes it practical to test a conservative value, perform a small operation, and then refine the setting. Names and ranges are version-specific; if a field is absent, do not assume another release’s value applies.

Setting area What it controls Practical starting approach
Maximum size The largest number of blocks one operation may process. Begin low enough that a mistake is recoverable, then increase after checking durability, drops, and server behavior.
Speed How quickly eligible blocks are processed. Use a moderate value on a server or shared world; very fast processing can make failures and unwanted blocks harder to notice.
Distance How far the search may reach from the starting block. Keep the range tight while learning the grouping behavior, especially near walls, roofs, or adjacent builds.
Cost The configured resource or action cost associated with bulk processing. Confirm what your pack’s cost setting consumes before using it on a large cluster.
Eligible tools Which held tools can trigger the action. Limit eligibility to tools whose normal harvest rules you understand; this prevents an unsuitable item from starting a bulk action.
Eligible blocks Which blocks can be included. Use a whitelist when you need predictable behavior in a mixed-material area; use a blacklist when a broad category is useful but a few blocks must be protected.
Grouping shape How the mod decides whether neighboring blocks belong to the same group. Test the selected shape on a small exposed cluster before mining behind a wall or floor.
Tool or pack overrides Per-tool behavior exposed for pack developers or advanced configurations. Check the override before changing global rules if only one tool should behave differently.
TPS guard A safeguard that can limit or defer work when server tick performance is poor. Leave the safeguard enabled on multiplayer servers unless the administrator has a tested reason to change it.
Undo An advertised command for reversing an excavation result where the release and server permissions support it. Learn the command shown by your build before experimenting; do not treat undo as a substitute for a backup.

Use grouping, distance, and limits safely

Connected does not always mean visually adjacent

Whether two blocks belong to one operation depends on the release’s grouping logic. A vein can be separated by a gap, diagonal contact, a different block, or a configured distance and therefore be treated as multiple groups. Conversely, a broad grouping shape can connect more blocks than you intended when several deposits or logs are close together. Expose a small section and test the behavior before applying the key inside a structure.

Maximum size is a safety boundary

A high limit is convenient for a large ore pocket or a tall tree, but it also increases the number of blocks that can be removed by one misclick. The limit does not override block or tool filters, and it is not a guarantee that every block in a visually continuous formation will qualify. Set a conservative maximum while learning, then raise it only after confirming what the grouping and distance settings include.

Distance protects nearby builds

The distance rule limits how far the search may travel from the starting point. This is especially important in caves, mineshafts, and bases where a connected material may continue behind a decorative wall or floor. A short distance gives you more opportunities to see the boundary before the operation reaches it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tool durability, drops, and server rules

Bulk mining saves repeated inputs, not the normal consequences of breaking blocks. Before a large operation, make sure the tool has enough durability for the number of blocks the action may process and confirm that your enchantments, block drops, hunger or exhaustion behavior, and protection rules behave as expected in the pack. A test operation also reveals whether a server has restricted the action, reduced its speed, or applied a configured cost.

  • Keep a spare tool available when testing an unfamiliar maximum size.
  • Stand where the resulting drops can be collected safely; a fast operation can scatter items or expose a fall.
  • Do not activate the key while aiming at a block that belongs to a player build or a protected region.
  • On a server, ask the administrator whether bulk mining is allowed and whether the server has a separate configuration or permission check.
  • Use the advertised TPS guard rather than disabling performance protection merely to make a large operation complete faster.

Fix a key that does nothing

1. Confirm the mod actually loaded

Return to the loader’s mod list or title-screen information. If Ore Excavation is absent, the problem is installation or compatibility, not the key binding. Match the JAR’s Minecraft version and Forge or NeoForge loader to the running instance.

2. Recheck the binding

Open Options → Controls and locate the Ore Excavation action. Assign a key with no conflict and test it in a controlled world. A binding shown as conflicting can still appear to work intermittently when another action captures the same input.

3. Avoid unusual symbol keys

The project warns that outdated input libraries can make the excavation key unreliable on non-US keyboard layouts, particularly when the binding uses unusual symbols. Choose a standard letter, number, or mouse button while troubleshooting. If the problem disappears, keep the reliable binding or update the mod and its required libraries to versions supported by the current release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Check eligibility and limits

Hold a tool that normally harvests the target and test a block that should be included by the active block rules. Review the maximum size, distance, cost, blacklist or whitelist, and grouping settings. A key can be functioning correctly while the operation is rejected because the target fails one of these checks.

5. Test without unrelated variables

Use a small single-material cluster in a new test area. Temporarily remove only the setting you suspect, change one value, and test again. Avoid changing the key, tool list, block list, and grouping shape simultaneously; doing so hides the cause.

Multiplayer installation and administration

The project listing identifies client and server support. In multiplayer, the client and server should use compatible Ore Excavation versions and the same loader family for the target Minecraft version. A client-only installation may show a key but still fail or be rejected when the server does not have the expected mod or configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the server’s exact Minecraft version, loader, and Ore Excavation release.
  2. Install the matching client file in each player’s instance.
  3. Install the server-side file and any required dependencies according to the server’s normal mod workflow.
  4. Restart the server when its loader requires a restart for a changed JAR, even though the mod’s gameplay configuration can be adjusted in-game without a reload.
  5. Test in a permitted area with a small cluster and observe tick performance before allowing larger limits.
  6. Publish the server’s policy for protected regions, allowed tools, maximum size, and any configured cost so players know what an excavation will do.

If one player can activate the key locally but no blocks are processed, compare the server log and configuration with the client. Permissions, region protection, server-side limits, and a loader mismatch can all stop an otherwise correct key bind.

Do not confuse Ore Excavation with the separate Excavation project

A similarly named Excavation project documents a backtick key (`) by default, a configurable maximum of 64 blocks, connected-block mining with a valid tool, and datapack tags named excavation:whitelist and excavation:blacklist. Those details belong to that separate project and should not be treated as universal Ore Excavation defaults. Ore Excavation’s key, limits, tags, and configuration labels depend on its own release.

When a tutorial tells you to press backtick, set a 64-block cap, or edit those exact tags, first verify that the tutorial is describing the same mod file you installed. The safest source of truth for Ore Excavation is the Controls screen and configuration exposed by your build.

Ore Excavation versus Create Ore Excavation

Create Ore Excavation is a different addon with a different purpose. It requires Create and adds hidden infinite ore veins and fluid reservoirs that are exploited with machines. It uses a Drilling Machine, Fluid Extractor, rotational force, and an Ore Vein Finder. It is not the connected-block utility that responds to a held key while you break one ordinary ore block.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Question Ore Excavation Create Ore Excavation
Primary function Processes connected eligible blocks in one tool-based operation. Provides machine-based access to hidden infinite ore veins and fluid reservoirs.
Activation model Hold the configured excavation key and break an eligible block. Build and operate the documented Create machinery and locate resources with an Ore Vein Finder.
Required dependency Use the loader and dependencies listed for the selected Ore Excavation release. Requires Create.
Typical result A connected cluster or other configured group is mined or cut at once. A renewable production setup is built around drilling, fluid extraction, and rotational power.
Best fit Players who want to reduce repetitive mining or tree-cutting clicks. Players designing an automated Create-based resource system.

A practical first-use checklist

  • Verify Java Edition, the exact Minecraft version, and Forge or NeoForge compatibility.
  • Install the release in the correct instance’s mods set and confirm that the loader sees it.
  • Assign the action in Options → Controls and remove conflicts.
  • Choose a standard key if a non-US layout or symbol key is unreliable.
  • Use a valid tool and a small, clearly connected target.
  • Review block and tool eligibility, grouping, maximum size, distance, speed, and cost.
  • Check durability, drops, hunger or exhaustion, protected-area rules, and server permissions.
  • Leave the TPS guard enabled on shared servers and test performance with a small operation.
  • Remember that details from the separate Excavation project, including backtick, 64 blocks, and its datapack tags, are not automatic Ore Excavation settings.

Choosing settings for common situations

Mining a small exposed ore vein

Use a modest maximum size and short distance. Hold the configured key while breaking one ore block, then check that only the connected deposit was selected. This is the safest way to learn your grouping shape and confirm that the held tool is eligible.

Cutting a naturally connected tree

Use an eligible axe and a block list that includes the intended logs while excluding blocks you want to preserve. Test on one tree before applying the action in a dense forest, because grouping and distance rules may include connected wood you did not intend to remove.

Playing on a busy server

Favor conservative size and speed values, keep the TPS guard active, and follow the administrator’s protected-region and permission rules. If the server uses a separate configuration, the server’s limits take priority over what your client interface appears to allow.

Building a modpack

Use per-tool overrides when only selected tools should trigger bulk behavior, define explicit block lists, and document the cost and maximum-size choices for players. Test the pack on both client and server when multiplayer support is expected.
