Check your account’s ownership before buying anything: Java and Bedrock are separate editions, but the official PC bundle includes both.
Switch editions in the Minecraft Launcher

Open the official Minecraft Launcher. If it is not installed, get it through Microsoft Store or Minecraft’s official download page.

Sign in with the Microsoft account used to purchase Minecraft.

In the left-hand menu, select Minecraft: Bedrock Edition or Minecraft for Windows.

Check the button shown for that edition. Play or Install means it is owned by the signed-in account; Buy Now means the launcher does not show it as owned by that account.

If the button says Install, select it and then choose Play when installation finishes.

Check ownership before purchasing
Minecraft’s PC bundle includes Java and Bedrock. The bundle was released on June 7, 2022, but that date alone does not establish what a particular account owns. Check the launcher or Microsoft Store while signed in to the account used for the purchase. Minecraft’s ownership instructions use the same Play/Install versus Buy Now check.
If Bedrock shows Buy Now, first confirm you are using the correct Microsoft account. If the account genuinely lacks the edition, the current official product is Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC. Do not assume a new purchase is required until you have checked the account’s entitlement.

What changes when you launch Bedrock?
Choosing Bedrock in the launcher changes which edition starts; it is not documented as a save conversion. The official pages do not describe automatic Java-to-Bedrock conversion of worlds, inventories, skins, or server progress, so do not expect those items to transfer just because you select another edition.
Choose the edition your friends and content require
Java and Bedrock use different multiplayer systems. Friends need to launch the same edition to play together.
