Official Steam PC servers are being upgraded by Funcom. Exiled Lands characters, followers and bases carry forward, but Isle of Siptah structures cannot be preserved in the same way because the map is being merged and its physical coordinates are changing. The instructions below separate private-server owners, official-server players and hosts so you can choose the safe path for your situation.

Enhanced is Conan Exiles’ Unreal Engine 5 version. It uses a different dedicated-server installation and creates its own save set when it first reads a UE4 database. Your old UE4 files normally remain where they were; the conversion produces separate Enhanced saves rather than silently overwriting the Legacy world.
The important limitation is direction. Funcom states that UE4 databases can be read by UE5, but the reverse is not true. Once the Enhanced server has converted and begun using its new database, that converted database cannot be moved back to a UE4 server. Treat the first Enhanced launch as an irreversible format change and preserve a pre-upgrade copy before starting it.

Installation names
On Steam, the dedicated-server folder changes from Conan Exiles Dedicated Server to Conan Exiles Enhanced Dedicated Server. The exact location depends on your Steam library, but the folder-name change is a useful check that you selected the Enhanced build rather than launching the Legacy executable.
Storage planning
Funcom lists the Enhanced client at 68 GB in 2026, compared with approximately 120 GB for the previous client. Those are published client figures, not a promise about your dedicated-server directory. Leave additional room for the new installation, the converted save, logs and backups; do not delete the old installation until you have verified the new world.

If retaining a working Legacy fallback matters, make the backup and complete any character transfer before you run the Enhanced server for the first time. Do not rely on the converted database as your rollback copy.
Preflight checklist for a private server
Complete these checks while the UE4 world is still running. A few minutes of preparation prevents the most difficult migration failures.
- Announce a maintenance window. Tell players when the server will stop and which client build they must install afterward.
- Stop the UE4 process cleanly. Do not copy a live database while the server is writing to it. A clean shutdown reduces the chance of an incomplete file.
- Make an independent backup. Copy
ConanSandbox/Saved/game.dbto a separate location, such as an external USB hard drive or another server backup drive. Keep the original copy read-only or clearly labeled, for examplegame.db-UE4-pre-upgrade. - Record your configuration. Preserve the server settings, administrator configuration, passwords and launch options used by the Legacy instance. Copy the appropriate configuration files into the Enhanced installation only after confirming their paths for that host.
- Inventory mods. Enhanced must load versions of your mods that support the new server build. Save the current mod list and load order; do not assume every UE4 mod is compatible.
- Check the host. Ask the provider whether it supplies the Enhanced dedicated-server build, supports importing an existing
game.db, allows your required mods and provides a tested backup/restore function. Funcom says it is working with some providers but cannot collaborate with every company that hosts Conan Exiles servers. - Plan disk space. Keep the Legacy installation and backup until the Enhanced world has been checked by administrators and players.
Step-by-step: migrate a private dedicated server
- Stop and verify the Legacy server is offline. Confirm that the process has exited and that no automated restart is about to begin. A file copied while the server is still active may not represent the final world state.
- Copy the database. In the UE4 installation, locate
ConanSandbox/Saved/game.db. Copy it to a separate backup location. Do not move it; you need the untouched file for recovery or for retaining a Legacy installation. - Install or select Enhanced. In Steam, install the Conan Exiles Enhanced dedicated-server app or update the installation your host provides. Confirm that the resulting directory is named
Conan Exiles Enhanced Dedicated Server, notConan Exiles Dedicated Server. - Prepare the Enhanced folders. Start with the Enhanced installation’s corresponding
ConanSandbox/Saveddirectory. Carry over only the configuration and mod files that the Enhanced build and your host support. Keep a copy of the fresh Enhanced directory so you can compare it if startup fails. - Place the database. Copy the backed-up UE4
game.dbinto the EnhancedConanSandbox/Saveddirectory. If the new installation already created a save, stop the server and preserve that file before replacing it; never overwrite your only backup. - Start the server once. Launch the Enhanced server with the intended configuration and allow it to finish its initial startup. The UE4 save remains in its original location while Enhanced converts it into a separate Enhanced save.
- Watch the first boot. Check the server log for a completed startup rather than an early crash, missing-mod message or database error. Conversion time is not universal, so judge completion by a normal ready state, not by a promised number of minutes.
- Join with a matching client. Every player must run a client version that matches the server version. Funcom’s server FAQ identifies version mismatch as a reason a client cannot connect.
- Validate before reopening the server broadly. Use an administrator account to check the map, player characters, followers, clan permissions, building areas, inventories, progression and server settings. Ask several players to verify their own characters and bases before you remove the maintenance notice.
What to verify after conversion
A server can report that it is running while still having a configuration or mod problem. Use this focused acceptance check:

- World selection: The intended map loads, with the expected climate, landmarks and player-built areas.
- Characters: Several accounts can log in without being reset or placed in an unexpected location.
- Followers: Named followers, mounts and inventories are present and assigned to the correct players.
- Structures: Administrators inspect representative bases, storage containers, crafting stations and defenses.
- Clans and permissions: Clan membership, ownership and administrator roles remain correct.
- Mods: Every enabled mod appears in the expected order and does not generate repeated load errors.
- Settings: Rates, passwords, PvE/PvP rules, progression and server-name settings match your documented Legacy configuration.
- Backups: A new Enhanced backup completes successfully before you overwrite or rotate any old backup.
If the world is missing content, stop the Enhanced server and investigate using the preserved Legacy directory and pre-upgrade database. Do not repeatedly launch with different files while your only backup is in place; make another copy before each recovery attempt.

Can you switch back to UE4 Legacy?
You cannot transfer an Enhanced database back into UE4. The conversion is one-way at the database level. The safe fallback is the untouched pre-upgrade backup, together with the original Legacy installation or a newly selected UE4 build.
What a fallback actually requires
- Stop the Enhanced server.
- Keep the converted Enhanced save intact in case you need to resume the upgrade.
- Select or reinstall the UE4/Legacy dedicated-server build.
- Restore the untouched pre-upgrade
game.dbto the Legacy server’sConanSandbox/Saveddirectory. - Restore the matching Legacy configuration and mod set, then test with one administrator account before reopening the server.
This is a restoration of the old world, not a reverse conversion of new Enhanced progress. Any characters, structures or inventory changes made only after the Enhanced launch will not exist in the restored UE4 database.
Official servers: Exiled Lands and Isle of Siptah
Exiled Lands
Funcom is updating official Steam PC servers to UE5. On Exiled Lands, the stated migration carries characters, followers and bases forward. Players still need the Enhanced client, and their client version must match the official server’s version after the rollout.
Isle of Siptah
Siptah requires special preparation. Enhanced combines Isle of Siptah and Exiled Lands on one server, so travel between the maps is possible without restarting the server. Access to Siptah still requires ownership of its DLC.

The physical Siptah map is changing and coordinates are being altered. As a result, bases and other placed structures cannot be preserved in the same way as on Exiled Lands. Before downtime:
- Dismantle Siptah bases and recover their materials.
- Place those materials in follower inventories rather than leaving them in buildings or containers.
- For clan-owned followers, transfer ownership to the individual character who must retain them. This avoids losing access when clan or character records are remapped.
- Record anything that cannot be dismantled so your clan knows what must be rebuilt after the merge.
Do not assume that a private server using Siptah will receive exactly the same treatment as an official server. Ask your host how its Enhanced build handles the map and test from a backup before making the new world public.
Preserve a character with server transfer before upgrading
If you want an additional character-preservation route before an irreversible upgrade, use Conan Exiles’ in-game transfer system. The path is:
- Press Esc.
- Choose Character.
- Select Server Transfer.
- Choose an eligible destination and confirm the transfer requirements shown in-game.
Transfers are restricted by server type. A single-player character cannot be imported directly to a dedicated server; a private-server character cannot be imported to an official server; and a PvE character cannot be transferred to PvP. Funcom describes the permitted progression as:

The transfer has a one-day cooldown. Because transfer eligibility and cooldowns can affect your timing, perform the transfer before maintenance rather than waiting until the UE5 server has already converted your database.
Platform and client requirements
The stated Enhanced rollout is for PC Steam. Funcom says all official PC servers move to UE5, while Epic Games Store and Windows Store players cannot access official servers from launch under the Steam-only rollout. A player on an unsupported storefront cannot solve that restriction by changing a server setting; the client platform and the official rollout must align.
For any server, the client and server versions must match. After an update, have players check that Steam has completed the client download and that no participant is still launching the Legacy build. If only one player cannot connect while others can, compare that player’s game version with the server’s reported version before changing ports or deleting saves.

Managed hosting removes the file-access work but does not remove migration responsibility. Funcom explicitly says it cannot collaborate with every company that provides Conan Exiles hosting, so there is no universal host-compatibility guarantee or host-by-host list to rely on.
Ask for written answers to these questions:
- Is the Conan Exiles Enhanced dedicated-server build available now, and what is its exact installation name?
- Can support import an existing UE4
ConanSandbox/Saved/game.dbwithout replacing the original backup? - Where will the converted Enhanced save be stored?
- Which configuration files, launch options and mods are supported after the upgrade?
- Can you download a full backup and restore it to a Legacy build if the first Enhanced boot fails?
- Can you obtain server logs from the first conversion startup?
- What maintenance window and recovery procedure does the provider use?
Do not approve the upgrade until you have downloaded your own database backup and know how to stop the service. A provider’s snapshot is useful, but an independently stored copy gives you a recovery option if the panel’s migration process goes wrong.

Choose Enhanced when you need compatibility with the current official Steam PC environment or want the combined-world design. Keep Legacy files and the untouched database when you need a fallback, operate mods that are not yet ready, or cannot accept a one-way conversion until your host confirms support.
Common migration failures and fixes
The server starts as a new world
Stop it immediately. Confirm that the file copied was the actual UE4 ConanSandbox/Saved/game.db, that it was placed in the Enhanced installation’s corresponding ConanSandbox/Saved directory, and that the service is launching the Enhanced folder you edited. Restore the backup to a clean Enhanced save directory and try once more; never discard the original copy.
Players receive a version-mismatch error
Have the affected player update or verify the Enhanced client and confirm that the server finished updating. All clients must match the server version; a Legacy client cannot join an Enhanced server simply because the address and port are unchanged.
The server crashes during startup
Review the first-error line in the server log, then test with the documented configuration and no unsupported mods if your host permits a controlled test. A clean Enhanced boot identifies whether the problem is the database conversion, a configuration setting or a mod. Reintroduce supported mods in the saved load order one at a time, keeping a new backup before each change.
Structures or followers are missing
Stop before players build over the affected area. Compare the result with your pre-upgrade inventory and clan records. On Siptah, coordinate changes and the map merge mean that structures are not expected to survive in the same way; on Exiled Lands, missing content should be treated as a migration or configuration problem and reported to the host with the preserved database and logs.
The host cannot explain its restore process
Do not perform the conversion on the live world. Download the database, request a test instance or a documented restore procedure, and keep the Legacy server offline but intact until the Enhanced instance passes your acceptance checks.
