An Unturned dedicated server starts on port 27015 by default and uses the consecutive pair 27015 and 27016. The first port is the one you configure and give to the server browser or connecting players; the second is consumed automatically for the other server function. To move the server, stop it, add Port 27017 to its Commands.dat, restart it, and forward 27017 and 27018 to the host computer. Every additional server needs another non-overlapping pair, such as 27019 and 27020.

The Unturned 3 Knowledgebase identifies 27015 and 27016 as the default pair and recommends starting successive instances at 27015, 27017, 27019, and so on. The Official Unturned Wiki describes the same model: Unturned uses two consecutive ports, but only the first is entered in the command.
Why an Unturned server needs two consecutive ports
The value in Port N is a starting port, not the complete allocation. Unturned reserves that value and the next integer. In the default arrangement, the starting value is 27015, so the server also takes 27016. When the starting value is 27017, the pair becomes 27017 and 27018.

Server-list queries and in-game traffic
The two ports have different jobs. One handles in-game server traffic and the other handles server-list queries. You do not enter both numbers in Commands.dat; Unturned derives the second number from the first. This is why forwarding only the number shown in the configuration can leave a server partly unreachable even when the process itself starts normally.
What “consecutive” means for planning
Consecutive means N and N+1. Two instances therefore cannot safely start at 27015 and 27016, because the first instance already occupies 27015–27016 and the second would require 27016–27017. Use a gap of two between starting values so that each pair is disjoint: 27015/27016, then 27017/27018, then 27019/27020.
Change the port in Commands.dat
The port setting belongs in the dedicated server instance’s Commands.dat file. Make the edit while the server is stopped; changing a file underneath a running process can be overwritten or have no effect until the next launch.
- Stop the dedicated server. Use the normal stop action for your launch method and wait until the server process has exited.
- Open the instance directory. Locate the folder that contains the server’s
Commands.dat. If you operate several instances, open the directory for the specific instance you are changing rather than editing another server’s file. - Add the port command. Put the starting port on its own line. For example:
Port 27017 - Save the file. Keep the command as plain text, with the port number after
Port. Do not enter the second port on the same line. - Start the server again. Unturned will treat 27017 as the starting value and allocate 27018 as its consecutive partner.
- Update network rules. Change router, firewall, and any hosting-panel rules to the new pair before asking remote players to connect.
Choosing a starting value
Use 27015 when you want the normal default. Pick another value when the default pair conflicts with an existing service, another Unturned instance, or a policy on your network. The value does not need to be 27017 specifically; the important requirements are that the next port is available and that both numbers are forwarded to the same host.
Confirming that the edit took effect
Check the startup output or server status information supplied by your launch method for the configured starting port. If the server still behaves as though it uses the old value, stop it again and verify that you edited the active instance’s file, saved the change, and restarted the correct executable. A common mistake on multi-server machines is changing a template or a different instance directory.

Forward both ports on a home network
Port forwarding maps traffic arriving at your public internet address to the computer running Unturned on your private LAN. The destination must be the host computer’s private IP address, not the public address shown to players.

Identify the LAN address assigned to the server computer by your router, such as an address in a private range. Reserve that address in the router’s DHCP settings, or configure an equivalent static assignment, so a reboot does not move the forwarding rule to another device. The exact menu names vary by router.
2. Create a rule for the configured starting port
In the router’s port-forwarding or virtual-server screen, create a rule that sends the configured starting port to the host computer’s private IP. For a Port 27017 configuration, the first rule covers 27017.
3. Create the consecutive rule
Add a second rule for 27018, pointing to the same private IP. Some routers let you enter a range, in which case specify 27017–27018. Do not forward the pair to different devices.
4. Match the router’s protocol setting
Routers may offer separate TCP, UDP, or “both” choices. Apply the protocol selection required by your router and server setup; if the interface cannot express the required setting cleanly, use its documented “both” option rather than silently omitting one protocol.

5. Allow the pair through the host firewall
The operating-system firewall is a second checkpoint after the router. Create inbound allowances for the same two port numbers on the server computer. A router rule can be correct while the host firewall still discards the traffic.
6. Test from outside the LAN
A connection made from the server computer itself does not prove that forwarding works. Test with a player or network that is outside your home LAN. If the server is reachable locally but not remotely, investigate the router, public address, ISP restrictions, and host firewall rather than changing the Unturned command repeatedly.
Complete port-change procedure
Use this sequence when moving an existing server from the default pair to another pair.
- Record the current server instance and its host computer’s private IP address.
- Stop the dedicated server and wait for the process to close.
- Open that instance’s
Commands.dat. - Add a single line such as
Port 27017, then save. - Change the router forwarding rule from the old pair to 27017–27018, or create the new range if you need a transition period.
- Allow 27017 and 27018 through the host operating-system firewall.
- Restart the dedicated server and verify that it is listening on the new starting value.
- Give players the public address together with the configured starting port required by the client/server connection flow.
- After the new connection has been confirmed, remove obsolete forwarding and firewall entries for the old pair so they are not mistaken for the active server later.
Run multiple Unturned servers on one machine
Each simultaneous instance needs its own two-port allocation and its own configuration context. The recommended sequence from the Unturned 3 Knowledgebase is to start the first instance at 27015, the second at 27017, and continue upward by two.

Keep instance data separate
Give each server its own instance directory and edit the corresponding Commands.dat. A port plan cannot prevent conflicts if two launch processes point to the same data directory or if both are started with the same Port value.

Forward every pair to the same host
On one physical computer, forward each pair to that computer’s private IP. For hosts on different computers, forward each pair to the private IP of the computer running that particular instance. The starting values must remain non-overlapping even when the machines share one public address.
Tell players which instance they are joining
Players need the public address and the starting port for the intended server. The second port is not a separate player-facing destination; it is the consecutive port Unturned uses internally for the other server function.
Home hosting versus managed hosting
The port numbers do not change because a server is hosted at home or by a managed provider. What changes is who controls the network edge and who performs maintenance.

Managed hosting is most useful when you cannot configure your router, your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT, or you want several servers without maintaining a home network. The Unturned port rule still applies; ask the provider which starting port and consecutive port it has assigned before creating your connection instructions.

The server starts, but remote players cannot connect
- Confirm the active
Commands.datcontains the intended starting value. - Check that both N and N+1 are forwarded, not only N.
- Verify both forwarding entries point to the host’s current private IP.
- Check the host operating-system firewall for the same pair.
- Test from outside the home LAN; local loopback or hairpin behavior can give a misleading result.
- Confirm that the public address supplied to players is current and that they are using the configured starting port.
The default server works, but a moved server does not
Compare the old and new rules side by side. A port change requires changing the configuration file, router mapping, host firewall allowance, and player connection instructions. Leaving any one of those on the old pair creates a split configuration.

One of two servers is unreachable
Inspect the pair assigned to each instance. If the second server starts at 27016, it overlaps the first server’s 27015–27016 allocation. Move it to a non-overlapping start such as 27017, update its own Commands.dat, and forward 27017–27018 to the correct host.
The process refuses to start or reports a port conflict
Another service or Unturned instance may already own one of the two required numbers. Stop duplicate processes, check other services on the host, and choose a pair in which neither N nor N+1 is occupied. Both numbers must be free; checking only the starting value is insufficient.
Players can connect inside the house but not from the internet
This pattern points to the network path rather than the game configuration. Recheck the private destination IP, router rules, host firewall, and public address. If those are correct, ask whether the ISP blocks inbound forwarding or places the connection behind carrier-grade NAT. In either case, a managed host or another network arrangement may be necessary.
The server appears in a list inconsistently
Remember that list queries and in-game traffic use the two different ports in the pair. Forwarding only one can produce partial visibility. Recheck the consecutive rule and allow both values through every firewall between the internet and the server.
Port-range context
Valve’s Steam Support documentation discusses UDP/TCP ranges that include 27015–27050. That platform-level range is useful context when a network administrator reviews permitted traffic, but it does not replace Unturned’s two-port rule. For an Unturned instance, calculate the pair from the configured starting value and forward both consecutive numbers. If a network policy allows only a subset of the broader range, select a non-overlapping pair inside the permitted policy and confirm that the host and players can reach it.

- Write down each instance’s starting port and resulting pair.
- Keep every
Commands.datin the correct instance directory. - Reserve a stable private IP for each home-hosted machine.
- Forward both consecutive ports to the correct destination.
- Mirror the pair in the operating-system firewall.
- Use non-overlapping starts for simultaneous servers.
- Retest from an external network after router, firewall, ISP, or host changes.
- Update player instructions whenever the public address or starting port changes.
- Remove obsolete rules after a migration to prevent future conflicts.
The practical rule is simple: configure one starting port, account for its immediate successor, and make every network layer agree with that pair. The default is 27015–27016; changing it means changing the command and forwarding the new N–N+1 pair.
