Switching a legacy Counter-Strike: Global Offensive server is not an in-place app-ID edit. Install the Counter-Strike 2 dedicated server with Steam app ID 730 (not the old dedicated-server ID 740), create a Steam Game Server Login Token for app 730, and launch the Linux server through cs2.sh with -dedicated and +sv_setsteamaccount. Treat the change as a fresh CS2 installation: existing CS:GO configurations, maps, and directories have not been confirmed to carry over.

The important change: CS2 uses app ID 730
The most common failed migration starts with the wrong SteamCMD app ID. Before that change, the client used 730 while the CS:GO dedicated server used 740. App 740 is therefore the legacy server application, not the package you should use for a new CS2 server.

A third-party installation guide describes validate as a checksum comparison that re-downloads damaged or missing files. It can take substantially longer than a normal update, so reserve it for initial setup or repair rather than running it on every routine update.

What you need before starting
Server capacity
The Valve Developer Community’s dedicated-server page lists a minimum of 2 GB of RAM and 65 GB of storage. The storage figure is the safer planning number; some third-party guides quote an installation size of about 60 GB, but the Valve figure is higher and should govern your disk allocation. Leave additional free space for updates, logs, temporary downloads, and any content you manage separately.

A separate Steam account for server credentials
You need a Steam Game Server Login Token (GSLT) created with 730 as its App ID. The token is passed at launch with +sv_setsteamaccount. Keep the token private: it authenticates the server and should not be pasted into public posts, screenshots, or shared startup scripts.
Plan this as a fresh CS2 installation
There is no confirmed migration procedure in the reviewed documentation that converts a CS:GO server directory into a CS2 directory. In particular, it has not been established that old configuration files, maps, or directory layouts can simply be copied across. The reliable approach is to install CS2 beside the old server, verify the new installation, and then rebuild or port only the settings you have checked for compatibility.
- Keep the CS:GO server stopped while you test CS2, or place the new installation in a separate directory so the two sets of files cannot be confused.
- Back up your existing CS:GO configuration and custom content before changing anything. The backup is for reference and recovery, not proof that the files are valid in CS2.
- Write down the settings you actually need—server name, map rotation, authentication details, and administrative preferences—then apply them deliberately in the CS2 environment.
- Do not assume a copied plugin, map, or configuration is supported simply because its filename is familiar.
Install or update the server with SteamCMD
1. Open SteamCMD and choose an installation directory
Install SteamCMD on the Windows or Linux host and start it from a shell or command prompt. Choose a directory with the documented 65 GB requirement available. The exact directory name is your choice; what matters is that SteamCMD writes the CS2 files there and that you later launch the server from that installation.
2. Sign in and download app 730
For a dedicated-server download, SteamCMD can use its anonymous login. Enter the following SteamCMD commands, replacing the path in your own environment if you set one explicitly:

quitIf your SteamCMD setup uses a command-line invocation instead of an interactive prompt, the equivalent sequence is:

quitDo not substitute 740 in either command. Downloading the old app can leave you with a directory that is not a CS2 server even though SteamCMD completed without an obvious error.
3. Let validation finish
Validation compares the local files with Steam’s checksums and retrieves files that are absent or damaged. Interrupting it can leave an incomplete installation, so wait for SteamCMD to report completion before attempting to launch. If validation repeatedly replaces files, check disk space and filesystem permissions before trying again.

The package you download and the identifier recorded in steam_appid.txt are not necessarily the same value. A Valve community talk-page discussion notes that a download app ID of 740 can be confused with the app ID expected by the running CS2 server; the steam_appid.txt file must contain 730 or players may be unable to join. This is a community discussion rather than a formal Valve rule, so treat it as a targeted diagnostic check rather than a reason to edit files routinely.
- Locate
steam_appid.txtin the CS2 installation. - Open it with a plain-text editor.
- Confirm that the file contains
730, with no extra app ID or explanatory text. - Save the file only if it is incorrect, then restart the server.
If the file already says 730, changing it will not fix an unrelated startup or network problem. Avoid replacing it with 740 simply because an older CS:GO guide uses that number.

Create the Steam Game Server Login Token
Use app ID 730 when generating the token
Create a GSLT through Steam’s game-server-token page and select 730 as the App ID. The token must correspond to the CS2 application. A token made for the legacy server application is not a substitute.
Pass the token at startup
Add the token to the launch arguments with +sv_setsteamaccount. Keep the value in the same startup configuration you use for the server, but restrict access to that file:

If a token is exposed, revoke it through Steam and create a replacement rather than continuing to publish or reuse the leaked credential.
The token step is especially important for a public server. A server can appear to launch locally while still failing the authentication required for outside players. Generate the token before troubleshooting player-connection problems so that authentication is not an unknown variable.
Launch CS2 as a dedicated server
Use the dedicated flag
Include -dedicated in the launch arguments. Valve’s guidance states that without this flag the game client launches instead of the dedicated server. The flag is therefore not an optional optimization; it selects the server mode.
Linux launch
On Linux, run the supplied cs2.sh script rather than invoking the binary directly. A minimal command pattern is:

./cs2.sh -dedicated +sv_setsteamaccount GSLT_TOKENRun it from the CS2 installation directory, or use the script’s full path in your service manager. Keep the terminal output available during the first launch; startup errors are considerably easier to diagnose when you can see the complete message instead of only a service exit code.
Windows launch
On Windows, start the CS2 server launcher installed by SteamCMD and include the same two functional arguments:
-dedicated +sv_setsteamaccount GSLT_TOKENThe exact executable name and service wrapper depend on how you installed and manage the host. The non-negotiable parts from Valve’s instructions are app 730, -dedicated, and a GSLT passed through +sv_setsteamaccount.
Linux startup failures: the checks that matter first
“Cannot open shared object file” and steamclient.so
Third-party Linux guides report that CS2 may fail during boot when the required steamclient.so library is not available at the path the server expects. Their remedy is a symbolic link to that library at the required location. Because the precise path can vary with the SteamCMD layout and is not stated in the available Valve excerpt, do not copy a path from an unrelated distribution or guide blindly.
- Confirm that the SteamCMD installation completed and that a
steamclient.sofile exists in the Steam runtime files. - Read the exact missing-library path in the startup error.
- Follow the current Counter-Strike 2 dedicated-server instructions for your distribution to create the symlink at that expected path.
- Restart with
./cs2.sh -dedicatedand keep the output visible to verify that the library error is gone.
Creating a link to the wrong architecture or to a deleted file only changes the error message. Re-run validation if the library is genuinely missing rather than manufacturing a link to an unrelated copy.
Launching the binary directly
If the server exits immediately on Linux, verify that you used cs2.sh. The documented launch method is the script, not the game binary directly. The script sets up the runtime environment expected by the server; bypassing it can produce failures that look like missing libraries or a broken installation.

Crashes associated with a personal Steam account
Forum users have reported crashes when running the server under their own Steam account, and at least one user reported using a separate “dummy” Steam account. These are unofficial user reports, not a Valve-supported requirement. If your server crashes only when authenticated with your normal account, isolate the account variable in a controlled test, protect any new account as carefully as the main one, and do not treat the workaround as guaranteed.
Verify the new server before retiring CS:GO
Use this order so that each check removes a distinct class of failure:
- Package: SteamCMD shows app 730 completed successfully; validation has finished without a persistent disk or permission error.
- Files:
steam_appid.txtcontains 730. - Mode: the launch command includes
-dedicated, and Linux starts throughcs2.sh. - Authentication: a GSLT created for app 730 is supplied with
+sv_setsteamaccount. - Runtime: the process remains running long enough to show normal startup output rather than exiting immediately.
- Join test: test from a client that is not the server host, then check the server console for authentication or file errors.
- Content: add any custom configuration or maps one item at a time, testing after each change instead of copying the entire CS:GO directory.
This sequence distinguishes an installation problem from a token problem and from an incompatible custom file. If the server launches but nobody can join, check the app ID recorded in steam_appid.txt and the 730 GSLT before changing unrelated settings.
How to handle old configs, maps, and directories
Do not promise yourself a seamless conversion. The available documentation does not confirm that CS:GO configs, maps, or server directories carry over to CS2. Keep the old files as a read-only reference and recreate the CS2 setup in its own directory.
- Start with the CS2 installation’s default files so you know the clean server can boot.
- Re-enter settings manually, checking each command against current CS2 syntax.
- Introduce custom maps only after the base server works; a legacy map package may be incompatible even if it has the same filename.
- Copy text selectively rather than replacing entire directories, and retain a dated backup of every working CS2 configuration.
If a change causes a crash, remove only the last addition and return to the last known-good state. This is faster and safer than repeatedly reinstalling while several unknown files are changing at once.
Updating the CS2 server after the switch
Stop the running server cleanly before updating its files. Run SteamCMD with app_update 730, wait for completion, and then launch through the same tested command. Use app_update 730 validate when an update appears incomplete, files are missing, or the server behaves as though installation data is corrupted.
After a major update, repeat the short verification sequence: confirm the process still starts with -dedicated, confirm the 730 app ID file, and confirm the GSLT is still present in the startup configuration. Keep your backups because a game update can expose assumptions in custom configurations even when the SteamCMD update itself succeeds.

Once those checks pass and your recreated configuration behaves as expected, schedule the final cutover and preserve the old directory as an archive. This staged approach gives you a rollback reference without pretending that the two server formats are interchangeable.
