What you are actually uploading
A Workshop subscription is not, by itself, a server installation. It gives your Terraria client access to a downloadable world asset. The server can use that asset only after the world file has been transferred to the server machine (or to the file area exposed by a managed host) and selected in the server startup configuration.

The two file extensions to check
| File | Use | Important rule |
|---|---|---|
.wld |
The Terraria world file loaded by a vanilla or tModLoader server. | Use this file in the server’s world configuration. |
.twld |
A tModLoader companion file that stores mod-related world data. | Do not put the .twld path in the server’s world argument. |
The tModLoader server guide is explicit that the world argument must point to the full .wld path, not the .twld file: Starting a modded server.

Before you move the world
Choose the server environment first
Decide whether the destination is a vanilla Terraria dedicated server or a tModLoader server. They are different executables and installations, with different mod requirements and potentially different Worlds directories. A world visible in one installation is not automatically available to the other. The Terraria server setup guide distinguishes dedicated servers from Host & Play and documents the normal Windows arrangement: Guide:Setting up a Terraria server.
Back up the destination
Copy the server’s current world before replacing or overwriting anything. Give the backup a distinct name and keep it outside the directory you are about to edit if possible. Also make a second copy of the downloaded Workshop .wld before renaming it or changing configuration. If a startup test fails, these copies let you restore the prior world instead of trying to reconstruct it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Prepare access to the server files
- For a self-hosted server, you need access to the installation’s Terraria
Worldslocation and permission to copy files there. - For a managed host, use the provider’s file manager or FTP/SFTP account. The panel may call the destination “Worlds,” “worlds,” or expose it only through a file browser.
- Stop the server before replacing a world file. A running process can keep the old file open or save over your upload when it shuts down.
Step 1: Download the world from Steam Workshop
- Open Terraria’s Steam Community Hub and enter the Terraria Workshop.
- Find the desired world and choose the Workshop option to subscribe to or download it.
- Wait for Steam to finish the download before looking for the file. A world that appears in the local game’s Workshop list may still be unavailable to the server until its file has finished downloading.
- Record the world’s displayed name, but do not rely on the display name alone when configuring the server. The actual filename, extension and folder are what matter.
Workshop content is managed by Steam and Terraria, so the exact local folder shown in File Explorer or Finder can vary with the operating system, Steam library and installation. If you cannot identify it immediately, search your Terraria-related Steam library folders for recently modified files ending in .wld. Do not upload a screenshot, a Workshop page, a compressed archive or a folder whose contents have not been checked.

Step 2: Identify and preserve the correct .wld file
Show file extensions
Enable full filename extensions in your file manager so that Castle.wld and Castle.wld.twld cannot be confused. Some file managers hide extensions and make two different files appear to have the same name.
Keep the base name stable
Preserve the downloaded .wld filename when possible. Spaces and punctuation are legal in many paths, but every character must then match the configured path. A short name containing only ordinary letters, numbers and underscores can reduce typing errors; if you rename the file, rename only the .wld file and use the new name consistently in the server configuration. Keep the original copy as a backup.
Keep companion data with a modded world
If the download includes both a .wld and a matching .twld, retain both when moving the world to a tModLoader installation. The server still starts with the .wld path; the companion file is not a substitute for it. The tModLoader utilities documentation describes a Worlds directory that can contain both extensions: Dedicated Server Utils.

Step 3: Upload the file into the server’s Worlds directory
Self-hosted vanilla or tModLoader server
- Stop the server process.
- Open the server installation’s Terraria
Worldsdirectory. The official dedicated-server documentation identifies this as the destination for world files: Dedicated Server. - Copy the Workshop
.wldfile into that directory. For a modded world, copy its matching.twldcompanion there as well. - Confirm that the copied file is readable by the account that runs the server. A file copied by an administrator can still have permissions that prevent a service account from opening it.
- Leave the existing world backup in place rather than deleting it until the new world has been tested.
Managed server
- Stop the server from the host’s control panel.
- Open the panel’s file manager or connect through its FTP/SFTP credentials.
- Navigate to the Terraria or tModLoader
Worldsdirectory used by that particular server instance. - Upload the
.wldfile, preserving its extension. Upload the matching.twldfile when the destination is tModLoader and the world supplies one. - Use the panel’s startup or world-selection setting to point at the uploaded file. A panel may ask for a filename, a relative path or an absolute path; use the format shown by that panel rather than pasting a path in a different format.
Host interfaces differ: one panel may expose a file browser while another requires FTP/SFTP, and some panels maintain separate vanilla and tModLoader instances. A hosted upload walkthrough is available at How to Upload Workshop Maps to a Terraria Server; treat its clicks as an example, not a universal panel layout. Before moving a modded world, verify that the host supports the Terraria version and tModLoader build you intend to run.
Step 4: Tell the server which world to load
Using serverconfig.txt with tModLoader
Open the tModLoader server’s serverconfig.txt and set the world= entry to the complete path of the uploaded .wld file. For example, the value must identify the actual file and extension, not merely the directory and not the .twld companion. Follow the configuration file’s existing syntax: do not add quotation marks unless the parser or the supplied example requires them.
The tModLoader utilities documentation covers the server’s configuration and utility files, including the Worlds directory and modpack-related files: Dedicated Server Utils.

Using the launch argument
If you start a tModLoader server from a command line instead of a configuration file, pass the full world path with the -world argument:
-world "full/path/to/name.wld"
Replace the example with the real path on the server. Quotation marks are useful when the path contains spaces in a command shell, but the equivalent world= line in a configuration file may use a different syntax. Copy the path from the server’s filesystem and check the resulting command or configuration before launching.
Vanilla server startup
Use the vanilla dedicated-server executable and its own world-selection setting or startup prompt, depending on how that server package is configured. Point it at the uploaded .wld in the vanilla installation’s Worlds location. Do not place the file in a tModLoader directory and then start the vanilla executable, or do the reverse, expecting the other installation to discover it.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Step 5: Match mods for a tModLoader world
A world can be transferred successfully and still fail when a player joins if the server does not have the world’s required mods. Install and enable the same mods, compatible versions and compatible load order on the server that were active when the world was created. A vanilla server cannot load content that depends on tModLoader mods.
Export a reproducible Workshop modpack
tModLoader’s official utilities documentation explains that Workshop mods should be represented by a saved modpack. Export the modpack from the tModLoader client and provide the server with its install.txt and enabled.json files in the location expected by the server utilities. Workshop does not identify mods by name in a way that lets a server reliably install the correct set automatically, so copying only the world file is insufficient for a mod-dependent map.
- On the client that has the working world, open tModLoader’s mod-management or modpack controls.
- Save or export the enabled mod list as a modpack.
- Locate the resulting
install.txtandenabled.jsonfiles. - Place those files where the dedicated-server utilities expect modpack input, then install the listed Workshop mods on the server.
- Enable the same set and check versions before starting the world.
The exact menu wording can change between tModLoader releases, so use the controls shown by the installed version while preserving those two files. The utilities reference is the authoritative description of the required files: Dedicated Server Utils.
Step 6: Start and verify the upload
- Start the intended vanilla or tModLoader server executable.
- Watch the console or log for the selected world path. Confirm that it names the uploaded
.wldfile. - Join the server with a client running the same Terraria or tModLoader environment.
- Check a recognizable feature from the Workshop map: terrain shape, spawn area, buildings or another deliberate landmark.
- Stop the server normally after verification so it can save the world cleanly, then retain the original backup until players have confirmed that everything is present.
If the server creates a new world or presents an empty map, stop it rather than exploring and saving over the wrong file. Recheck the path, spelling, extension, directory, permissions and whether the configuration points to .wld instead of .twld.
Vanilla and tModLoader workflows compared
| Comparison point | Vanilla Terraria | tModLoader |
|---|---|---|
| Server executable | Terraria’s dedicated-server package. | tModLoader dedicated-server executable and utilities. |
| World file | The uploaded .wld. |
The uploaded .wld, with a matching .twld retained when supplied. |
| World directory | The vanilla installation’s Terraria Worlds location. |
The tModLoader installation’s Worlds location. |
| Startup selection | Use the vanilla server’s world prompt or configuration. | Use world= in serverconfig.txt or -world "full/path/to/name.wld". |
| Mods | Not applicable to a vanilla server. | Required when the world depends on mods; versions and load order must match. |
| Workshop modpack files | Not required for a vanilla world. | Use the exported install.txt and enabled.json workflow when Workshop mods are needed. |
Self-hosting and managed hosting compared
| Operational concern | Self-hosted server | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| File transfer | Copy directly into the installation’s Worlds directory. |
Use the provider’s file manager or FTP/SFTP. |
| Backups | You choose the location, frequency and retention of backups. | Use the panel’s backup tools if provided, and keep an independent copy before replacement. |
| Version selection | You install and maintain the Terraria or tModLoader version. | The panel may offer selectable versions; confirm the requested environment is available. |
| Mod support | You install the matching mods and maintain their files. | Support depends on the provider’s tModLoader implementation and file access. |
| Maintenance | You handle updates, permissions, restarts and logs. | The provider handles infrastructure, while you still configure worlds and mods. |
Troubleshooting by symptom
The server loads a blank or newly generated world
- Check that the configured value names the uploaded
.wld, including its extension. - Verify every directory name and character in the path.
- Confirm that the file was uploaded to the active server instance’s
Worldsdirectory, not a similarly named vanilla or tModLoader installation. - Remove accidental quotation marks when the configuration format does not accept them; retain them in a command shell only when needed to group a path with spaces.
- Check that the server process has read permission.
- Stop the server before making another replacement attempt, and restore the backup if the wrong world was saved.
The Workshop map works locally but is missing on the server
- Compare the server executable with the environment used to create the map: vanilla and tModLoader are not interchangeable.
- Confirm that the server received the
.wld, not only a Workshop folder or the.twldcompanion. - For a modded world, install and enable every required mod and check compatibility before joining.
- Make sure the startup setting references the newly uploaded file rather than an older world with a similar name.
Players receive mod errors when joining
- Compare the client and server mod lists.
- Compare mod versions and load order.
- Use the exported modpack’s
install.txtandenabled.jsonso the server installs and enables the intended Workshop set. - Confirm that the server is running tModLoader; a vanilla executable cannot provide the mod runtime.
The host panel cannot find the world
- Upload through the panel’s actual Terraria
Worldsdirectory rather than a general home or save folder. - Check whether the panel has separate file trees for vanilla Terraria and tModLoader.
- Set the panel’s startup world name or path after uploading; file presence alone does not select the world.
- If the panel does not offer the required tModLoader version or mod support, ask the provider before migrating the map.
The world file uploads but will not open
- Confirm that the transfer completed and the file size is not zero or unexpectedly smaller than the source copy.
- Use the backup copy to test whether the problem is limited to the transfer.
- Check that the server version and environment are compatible with the world.
- For modded saves, restore the matching companion file and modpack setup before testing again.
Moving or replacing a live server world safely
To replace an existing map, announce downtime, stop the server, make a dated backup of the current .wld, upload the new file under a distinct name, change the startup path, and launch once for verification. Keep the old path and backup until players have checked their inventories, builds and spawn area. If the new world is wrong, stop the server, point the configuration back to the backup world and restart; do not overwrite the only known-good copy.
For a recurring Workshop update, treat each download as a new asset. Compare the filename and accompanying files, copy the previous server world first, then replace the selected .wld only during a planned stop. A Workshop subscription update on one player’s computer does not update the copy already stored on a server.
Quick Recap
Final operating sequence
- Download or subscribe to the map through Terraria’s Steam Workshop.
- Locate the actual
.wldand preserve a backup; retain a matching.twldfor tModLoader when present. - Identify the exact vanilla or tModLoader server instance that will run the map.
- Stop that server and upload the files to its
Worldsdirectory. - Set the server’s world selection to the full
.wldpath. - For a modded world, install matching mods and apply the exported
install.txtandenabled.jsonmodpack files. - Start the server, inspect the selected path, join with the matching client environment and verify recognizable map features.
