Pair a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller
Choose one of Nintendo’s supported methods:
- USB-C cable: Connect the controller to the console with the included USB-C cable.
- Dock USB: Dock the console and connect the controller to the dock with a USB-C cable.
- Wireless: On the HOME Menu, open Controllers > Change Grip/Order, then hold the controller’s SYNC button for at least one second.
Once paired, the player LEDs show the controller’s assigned number. See Nintendo’s Pro Controller pairing instructions for the official steps.
Can you use original Nintendo Switch controllers?
Supported original Nintendo Switch controllers can connect wirelessly to Switch 2, subject to compatibility and game support. The original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can pair through a dock USB connection or the wireless Controllers > Change Grip/Order and SYNC-button process. Original Joy-Con can be used wirelessly, but they cannot attach to the Switch 2 console.
#1 Best Overall
- Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
Do not assume older accessories will fit Joy-Con 2: Nintendo lists some original Joy-Con accessories as incompatible with the newer controllers. Check Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information for accessory and controller details.
How many wireless controllers can connect?
Nintendo says up to eight wireless controllers can be paired with Switch 2, but the number that can be connected at once varies by controller type, features, and software. If Bluetooth audio is connected, no more than two wireless controllers can be connected. Nintendo also counts left and right Joy-Con 2 as two controllers when they are connected wirelessly. These are operating limits, not a guarantee that every game supports the same number of players. See Nintendo’s wireless controller connection guidance.
Rank #2

- Includes two Joy-Con 2 straps.
- Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
If a controller will not sync
Joy-Con 2
- Make sure the console is powered on, not asleep, before starting wireless pairing.
- Return to Controllers > Change Grip/Order and hold SYNC for at least one second.
- If wireless pairing does not work, attach Joy-Con 2 to the powered-on console.
Switch 2 Pro Controller
- Check that the console has the latest system update.
- Try the USB-C method, then try wireless pairing from Controllers > Change Grip/Order.
- If a wired connection fails, test another dock USB port or cable.
- If the controller still cannot pair over USB-C or wirelessly, Nintendo’s guidance is to request service. See Nintendo’s Pro Controller troubleshooting steps.
Pairing does not require a charging accessory
You do not need to buy a charging accessory to sync controllers. Joy-Con 2 can charge while attached to the console or in a Joy-Con 2 charging grip. Original Joy-Con cannot attach to Switch 2 and need a Nintendo Switch console or a compatible accessory for charging. Charging and pairing are separate tasks; see Nintendo’s Joy-Con 2 charging information for charging options.
