This guide covers Story Mode NPC interactions and distinguishes them from player-to-player communication in Red Dead Online.
How to start a conversation with an NPC
- Approach the character. Move close enough for the game to recognize an interaction opportunity.
- Look for the on-screen prompt. When one appears, use the indicated input to begin or choose an interaction. Prompts are contextual, so not every character will be available to talk to in every situation.
- Choose the response shown by the game. Depending on the character and context, options may include a greeting or a more confrontational interaction.
Rockstar’s Title Update 1.03 notes refer to talking to characters and companions, as well as NPC greetings, antagonizing, and robbing. These documented options do not mean every NPC offers all of them.

What do the interaction choices mean?
Greet
A greeting is the conversational opening: use it when you want to engage someone without choosing the confrontational option.
Antagonize
Antagonizing is the more hostile conversational choice. Treat it as distinct from a friendly greeting; the official notes identify the option but do not establish a guaranteed reaction for every character or encounter.

Rob
Robbing is a crime-oriented action, not simply another way to start ordinary conversation. Rockstar’s notes mention it among NPC interaction options, but availability depends on the situation.
What to do if no interaction prompt appears
A missing prompt does not necessarily mean you are using the wrong input. Rockstar has documented cases involving missing companion or NPC speak prompts, conversation lockups, and interaction reliability under Free Aim. Those notes describe particular issues and fixes, not a universal diagnosis for every missing prompt.

- Check whether the character is actually available for interaction in the current scene.
- Try again when you are not occupied by movement, a mission, or another active interaction.
- If the camera or control context seems to be interfering, return to a normal view and check whether the prompt appears.
- If a conversation seems stuck, allow the interaction to finish or leave the immediate area before trying again.
Rockstar’s Title Update 1.11 notes include Free Aim interaction-reliability fixes, while the earlier Title Update 1.03 notes document prompt and conversation issues. These are records of specific edge cases rather than a promise that any one step will resolve all interaction problems.
How talking in Red Dead Online differs
Story Mode interaction is about the player character engaging NPCs. Red Dead Online also provides ways to communicate with other players, including emotes, and historically described Offensive and Defensive play styles. Rockstar’s 2019 feature announcement presented Defensive style for players who prefer exploring Free Roam over conflict and described related protections and restrictions. That is a historical feature description; it should not be taken as confirmation of current service behavior or availability.

Which buttons should you press?
There is no single button sequence established here for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. Follow the prompt displayed in your game, and consult the Controls menu for your platform and any remapped inputs. Rockstar’s Tap Assist accessibility guidance covers the relevant setting, but does not establish that it changes the standard NPC conversation input: see Enabling the Tap Assist Accessibility Settings in Red Dead Redemption 2.
