How to Use PKHeX with Pokémon Scarlet and Violet on Switch: What to Know First

PKHeX works with Pokémon save files, but Switch compatibility depends on your exact setup. Understand the general workflow and what legality checks and HOME instructions do—and do not—guarantee.

PKHeX edits Pokémon save files; it does not modify Scarlet or Violet through an ordinary in-game menu. The general workflow is to export a save with a compatible save manager, open it in PKHeX, review and edit it, then restore it using the same save-management workflow. That is a high-level outline, not a universal Switch tutorial: the available documentation does not establish which console models, system versions, or save-manager setups support it.

What PKHeX does

PKHeX is a Pokémon core-series save editor. Its project listing describes support for editing save files and individual Pokémon files. The PKHeX project on GitHub is the primary project source; the capability details and warning below come from the surfaced Project Pokémon listing.

For Scarlet and Violet, the broad process concerns a save file: export it, open it in an editor, make changes, check the result, and restore the edited file. PKHeX is not an in-game menu or a way to directly change game data while playing.

What to verify before attempting the save-file workflow

Do not assume that a guide for one Switch setup applies to another. The available guidance does not establish compatible console models, firmware versions, or current save-manager requirements. It also does not establish the risk of save corruption for a particular setup.

Pokémon Scarlet - Nintendo Switch - Standard Edition
  • New Pokémon to Discover - Learn new details about Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly—the three Pokémon from which you’ll choose your first partner—along with other wonderful new Pokémon, including the Legendary Pokémon Koraidon and Miraidon!
  • The World of Pokémon Has Evolved - Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet offer an open-world experience that only the Pokémon series can deliver—one welcoming even to newcomers to the series.
  • You can experience a new style of adventure, with a world that you’re free to explore at your leisure and not in an order dictated by the story. You will, of course, journey to hone your skills as a Pokémon Trainer, but many more discoveries and stories await you. Meet a variety of people and Pokémon, and adventure in the world of Pokémon the way you want to.
  • A Deeper Experience with Multiplayer* Gameplay - Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet allow multiplayer gameplay with up to four players. Along with series staples, such as trading and battling Pokémon, you will be able to explore the various locations of the region in these games with other players. You can discover new Pokémon and explore unfamiliar areas with your friends and family, opening the door to an adventure more precious and fun than ever!
  • Meet the characters - As one of the main characters, you’ll set off on your adventure. Your outfit will vary depending on whether you play Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet. Who knows what kind of story awaits you? For the first time in the series, one of two different professors will appear in your game depending on the version you choose to play.
  • Confirm whether your exact console model and system version support the save-export method you intend to use.
  • Confirm that your save manager works with that setup and can export and restore Scarlet or Violet saves.
  • Make a separate, unmodified backup and verify that you can restore it before editing anything.
  • Check that the editor version you use supports the save format you exported.
  • Decide whether your aim is offline editing or use with Pokémon HOME or other players; those are different questions, and a legality check does not settle transfer or online acceptance.

A third-party getting-started guide describes exporting a decrypted save, editing it, checking legality, exporting the edited file, and restoring it through the same save manager. This is a general description, not current official documentation of Switch compatibility or a verified procedure for every console and firmware combination. Do not treat it as confirmation that your device can safely follow those steps.

The general save-editing sequence

  1. Export: Use a save-management workflow verified for your exact console setup to export a backup of the Scarlet or Violet save. The available guidance does not establish a universal UI path or compatible setup.
  2. Open and edit: Open the exported save in a compatible PKHeX version. Make only changes you understand, then review the edited data.
  3. Check: Use PKHeX’s legality-checking features as a way to flag data for review. A passing check is not evidence that Nintendo will accept the Pokémon online or that Pokémon HOME will permit a transfer.
  4. Export and restore: Export the edited save, keep the original backup separate, and restore the edited file using the same save-management workflow used to export it. The exact restoration steps depend on the verified setup.

Does a legality check guarantee HOME transfer or online acceptance?

No. A legality checker can identify data that warrants review, but the available sources do not establish that passing a check guarantees online acceptance, prevents enforcement, or guarantees a transfer to Pokémon HOME.

Pokémon Violet Standard - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
  • Embark on a new Pokémon adventure
  • Catch, battle, and train Pokémon in the Paldea Region, a vast land filled with lakes, towering peaks, wastelands, small towns, and sprawling cities
  • Choose either Sprigatito, Fuecoco, or Quaxly, to be your first partner Pokémon before setting off on your journey through Paldea
  • Embark on an independent study called the Treasure Hunt to gain new experiences, meet new people, and find your very own treasure

Nintendo’s Scarlet and Violet Pokémon HOME instructions describe how to move Pokémon between the games and HOME; they do not promise that edited Pokémon will pass HOME checks or be accepted online. Treat those outcomes as unconfirmed rather than assuming that a green check in an editor settles them.

What Nintendo documents about Scarlet and Violet transfers to HOME

Nintendo’s transfer instructions specify use of the console version of Pokémon HOME. Pokémon currently in the party cannot be transferred. From the HOME box screen, you can select a Pokémon, inspect its summary, and see which games are compatible with it. These are transfer mechanics, not a guarantee about modified data.

Consider other players

The PKHeX project listing on Project Pokémon states: “We do not support or condone cheating at the expense of others. Do not use significantly hacked Pokémon in battle or in trades with those who are unaware hacked Pokémon are in use.” This is the project’s warning, not a statement of Nintendo policy. If you trade or battle with other people, be transparent and do not pass off significantly altered Pokémon as unmodified.
