Use passive taming: place a Plant Species Z Seed in the last slot of your hotbar, approach the Bulbdog, press the interaction key when prompted, and repeat the feeding after each hunger cooldown. You cannot tame a Bulbdog by knocking it out. Aquatic Mushroom also works, but the level-1 timing table gives Plant Species Z Seed a much shorter feeding interval.

Why tame a Bulbdog?
A Bulbdog is a shoulder-mounted charge-light companion. Once tamed, it can accompany you while you explore, providing portable illumination instead of requiring a separate light source in your hands. It is also listed as radiation immune, which is particularly useful when traveling through the hazardous areas associated with Aberration.

Those qualities make the Bulbdog a utility tame rather than a conventional combat mount. Its value is the light it carries and the convenience of having that light on your shoulder while you keep your hands available for tools, weapons or building materials. The taming process is deliberately low-force: success depends on patience, positioning and keeping the animal safe long enough to complete every feeding.
What passive taming means for a Bulbdog
Passive taming is an interaction-based method. You do not fire tranquilizer darts, use a club, drain a torpor bar or place food in an unconscious creature’s inventory. The Bulbdog remains conscious while you offer food directly to it.

The community-wiki method is explicitly labeled Passive and describes the animal as non-violently tamed. A knockout attempt is therefore not merely inefficient; it is the wrong taming system for this creature. If you have prepared narcotics or a weapon for a standard knockout tame, set those aside and prepare the listed food instead.
Prepare before approaching
Choose and obtain food
Plant Species Z Seed is the preferred food in the listed table. Aquatic Mushroom is an accepted substitute when seeds are unavailable or inconvenient on your current map or server. The best choice is the food you can reliably carry in enough quantity for the entire process, not simply the item with the shortest nominal interval.

- Open your inventory and locate the Plant Species Z Seed or Aquatic Mushroom.
- Move the food into the last slot of your hotbar. This is the slot the cited procedure specifies for the passive-feeding interaction.
- Keep that slot selected or be ready to switch to it before the prompt appears. If the game does not show a feed interaction, check the slot first.
Check the interaction control
On the default keyboard layout, the use key is E. That is a control convention, not a universal key on every platform. A remapped keyboard, console layout, controller profile, mod or later game update can display a different button. Use the prompt shown on your screen and verify the current binding in the game’s controls menu if the expected key does nothing.
Make the area safer
The procedure requires multiple approaches over time. Before the first feed, look for hostile creatures, environmental hazards and terrain that could separate you from the Bulbdog. Clear threats without striking the Bulbdog itself. Keeping the animal alive is practical protection inferred from the repeated, non-violent procedure; it is not a separate documented taming bonus or hidden multiplier.
Step-by-step: passive-tame the Bulbdog
1. Approach without attacking
Walk toward the Bulbdog with the selected food ready. Do not begin with a tranquilizer, club or other knockout attack. Move carefully enough that you can read the interaction prompt and avoid pushing the animal into danger.

2. Wait for the feed prompt
When you are close enough, the game should present its use interaction. On a default keyboard, press E. On another platform, press the button shown by the prompt. The food must be in the required final hotbar slot for the interaction to work as described.

Activate the prompt once. The Bulbdog consumes a single feeding; it does not accept the entire tame in one interaction. After the feed, move away only as far as necessary to stay safe and maintain a clear route back.
4. Wait for hunger to return
There is a cooldown between feedings. The Bulbdog must become hungry again before another interaction is accepted. Repeatedly pressing the use key before that point will not complete the tame and can leave you standing in danger for no benefit.
5. Repeat the interaction
When the animal is hungry again, approach and feed it using the same prompt. Continue alternating between the hunger interval and a single feeding. The taming meter advances over successive interactions rather than filling immediately.
6. Keep threats away during every interval
Use the waiting periods to watch the surrounding area, reposition if a hostile creature approaches and keep a retreat path open. Do not solve a nearby threat by swinging through the Bulbdog; an accidental hit can turn a controlled passive tame into a rescue or replacement task.

7. Stop when the taming meter is full
After the final accepted feeding, the Bulbdog becomes yours. Confirm the ownership and name prompt before leaving the area. If the meter is still incomplete, continue the hunger-and-feed cycle rather than switching to a knockout method.
Food choices and feeding intervals
The following values come from the cited level-1 example table. They describe the approximate interval per feed, not a guaranteed total tame time. Creature level, server rates and other configuration can change what you see in play.

The table establishes a clear interval advantage for Plant Species Z Seed, but it does not establish that every player can obtain it equally easily. Availability depends on the map and server configuration. If gathering the preferred seed exposes you to greater danger than using an available mushroom, the safer option can be the better real-world choice for that tame.
How long does Bulbdog taming take?
There is no single reliable answer in minutes. The cited figures are for a level-1 example and represent time between individual feedings. The number of feedings needed is not given as a universal constant, and higher creature levels can require a different total. Server taming multipliers also alter the displayed progression and waiting behavior.

Use the interval as a planning aid rather than a promise. If you choose Plant Species Z Seed, plan around roughly one minute between accepted feeds in the level-1 table. Plant Species Z Seed or Aquatic Mushroom?
Use four questions to decide when both foods are possible:
- Which item is available now? Map resources and server settings determine whether either food is practical to gather.
- How long can you defend the area? The longer mushroom interval creates more waiting exposure in the level-1 table.
- Can you carry enough food safely? A failed run for supplies costs more time than the nominal interval difference.
- What does your server display? Multipliers and mods can change the relationship shown in the reference table, so observe the in-game meter and prompt.
When access and safety are equal, Plant Species Z Seed is the straightforward choice because it is the preferred food and has the shorter documented per-feed interval. Aquatic Mushroom is the dependable fallback when seeds are not available.
Platform, control and version caveats
The default E key applies to the standard keyboard control scheme. It should not be treated as a universal instruction for console, controller or custom layouts. A remapped use button can also differ from the default even on PC.
Mods, platform differences, server configuration and later patches can alter food availability, prompts, timing or the way the taming meter is displayed. If your experience conflicts with the level-1 reference values, check the active server rates and mod list before assuming the tame is broken. The interaction prompt and the current taming meter are the authoritative indicators for your session.

No feed prompt appears
- Confirm that the food is in the last hotbar slot, not merely somewhere in your inventory.
- Move closer until the use prompt appears, but avoid walking the Bulbdog into a wall, drop or hostile creature.
- Check your controls if you are pressing the default keyboard key on a remapped or console layout.
- Make sure you are interacting with the Bulbdog rather than another nearby object or creature.
The Bulbdog will not eat a second time
Wait for its hunger cooldown. The animal cannot consume the entire tame at once, and an early interaction is not a substitute for the next hunger cycle. Keep the area secure and return when the prompt becomes available again.

The taming bar is moving very slowly
Verify which food you used and compare your expectations with the level-1 reference. Aquatic Mushroom’s listed interval is about 3 minutes 21 seconds per feed, compared with about 1 minute 1 second for Plant Species Z Seed. Creature level and server rates can also change the total, so a slow bar is not automatically a bug.
The Bulbdog is in danger while you wait
Break off the approach if a hostile creature enters the area. Draw threats away, create a safer position or retreat and return rather than attacking through the Bulbdog. The repeated approach requirement makes environmental control part of a successful practical plan, even though it is not a separately documented taming mechanic.
You accidentally attacked it
Stop using knockout-taming tactics. Bulbdogs are meant to be tamed non-violently; reassess the animal’s condition and surrounding threats before attempting another passive interaction. If it has been killed or the situation is no longer safe, secure a new attempt instead of escalating damage.
After the tame: using your Bulbdog
Once the meter completes, use the Bulbdog as a shoulder companion for exploration. Its charge-light role gives you illumination while your hands remain free, and its listed radiation immunity supports trips through Aberration’s radioactive areas. Treat it as a support pet: the reason to invest the waiting time is dependable light and environmental utility, not a knockout or combat-tame workflow.
Keep the pet protected when you pause between feeds during future attempts or travel with it. The same hazards that threaten an untamed Bulbdog can interrupt an otherwise successful plan, so route selection and awareness remain more important than carrying a weapon intended for a different taming method.
