Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →When a Linux VPS cannot send email, the most common cause is not Postfix itself but an upstream SMTP restriction—especially an outbound TCP port 25 block. Confirm the network path first, then decide whether you need direct server-to-server delivery or an authenticated SMTP relay. A relay on port 587 with STARTTLS is usually the fastest, lowest-maintenance solution for website notifications; direct delivery requires control of reverse DNS, authentication records and sender reputation.

This guide separates connection failures from queue, DNS, authentication and deliverability problems, then gives a recovery sequence for both Postfix and other MTAs.

What “can’t send email” actually means
Email can fail at several independent stages. Identify the stage before changing configuration; otherwise it is easy to “fix” Postfix while the provider network still drops the connection.
Connection timeout
A timeout while connecting to a recipient’s MX on TCP 25 means your server sent traffic but received no response. If the same timeout occurs with several unrelated MX hosts, suspect a VPS-provider or upstream egress block. A local firewall can also drop outbound packets.

Connection refused
A refusal is different: a host or firewall actively rejected the TCP connection. It can indicate a local rule, a closed destination listener, or an intermediate policy that sends resets. Test more than one MX before deciding which side is responsible.
TLS or authentication failure
If TCP connects but STARTTLS, certificate verification or SMTP authentication fails, the network path is working. Check the relay hostname, port, username, password, system clock and CA certificates instead of requesting a port-unblock.

Postfix cannot deliver if it cannot resolve the recipient domain’s MX records or the relay hostname. Resolver errors, an incomplete IPv6 setup and stale local DNS caches can all look like an SMTP outage.
Queue growth or recipient bounces
A message may be accepted locally and remain in the queue while Postfix retries. A bounce after SMTP delivery usually points to recipient policy, authentication, reverse-DNS, reputation or content issues—not a blocked local port.
The first diagnostic sequence
Run these checks in order. Substitute a real recipient domain for example.net; do not test only one destination.

- Read the queue. On Postfix, run
postqueue -p(ormailq). Record the queue ID and the exact status text, such as “connect to …:25: Connection timed out,” “deferred,” or a remote SMTP reply. - Read the MTA log. Use
journalctl -u postfix --since "1 hour ago"on systemd systems, or inspect your distribution’s mail log (commonly/var/log/mail.logor/var/log/maillog). Look for the first error, not only the final retry message. - Resolve the recipient MX records. Run
dig +short MX example.net. Ifdigis unavailable, usehost -t MX example.net. Note every MX hostname and its preference; a single unreachable host does not prove a provider block. - Test TCP 25 against several MX hosts. For each result, run
nc -vz mx1.example.net 25. PineRiver’s documented check is the same form. Repeated timeouts to multiple independent MX hosts point to an unopened or blocked path; a refusal requires firewall and listener investigation. - Check local listeners and outbound rules. Run
ss -ltnp | grep ':25'to see whether a local MTA is listening (this matters for inbound mail, not outbound connections). Reviewufw status verbose,nft list rulesetoriptables -S, depending on the firewall you use. Confirm that OUTPUT rules permit established connections and DNS. - Inspect the provider’s cloud firewall and network policy. A VPS control-panel firewall is separate from the guest operating system. A local UFW rule cannot remove a restriction enforced in the provider’s network. IONOS states that its default port-25 block is controlled centrally rather than in the Cloud Panel firewall.
- Check IPv4 and IPv6 separately. If an AAAA record exists but the VPS has broken IPv6 routing, Postfix may try IPv6 first and defer mail. Temporarily test an IPv4 destination with
nc -4 -vz mx1.example.net 25and compare it withnc -6 -vz … 25. - Retry one message after correcting the cause. Use
postqueue -fto request an immediate retry, then watch the log withjournalctl -fu postfix. Do not flush a large queue repeatedly while the underlying block remains.
Why a VPS provider may block SMTP
Outbound SMTP is frequently restricted to limit spam and abuse from newly created or compromised instances. cPanel explains: “Many providers block access to send data out on port 25 as a way to prevent spam from being sent from their network.” The policy is provider-specific and can change by product, region or account age.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDigitalOcean documents that SMTP ports 25, 465 and 587 are blocked by default on Droplets to prevent spam and other abuse; its support page was verified July 13, 2026. OVHcloud documents port 25 as blocked by default on Public Cloud instances in a policy dated May 28, 2026, and recommends authenticated submission on port 587 with STARTTLS, with documented infrastructure exceptions. These examples show why a successful test on one VPS does not establish that another provider permits the same port.
No population-wide failure rate is established by these provider documents. Treat the restriction as a policy to verify for your specific service, not as a universal property of Linux VPS hosting.
Choose the sending architecture before changing Postfix
| Axis | Direct delivery from the VPS | Authenticated SMTP relay |
|---|---|---|
| Network prerequisite | Your provider must permit outbound TCP 25 to recipient MX hosts. | Usually uses submission on port 587; it avoids a port-25 unblock, but you must verify that your provider permits the chosen submission port. |
| DNS and reputation | You own PTR (reverse DNS), SPF, DKIM, DMARC, IP reputation and monitoring. | The relay operates the delivery infrastructure; you still publish the relay’s SPF and DKIM records and should publish DMARC. |
| Operational effort | High: MTA updates, queue management, abuse handling, blocklist monitoring and IP warm-up are your responsibility. | Lower for application mail because the relay manages remote delivery, retries and much of the reputation layer. |
| Best fit | Operators who need direct server-to-server control and can run a mail service continuously. | Websites and applications sending password resets, contact-form notices and other transactional messages. |
DigitalOcean recommends a third-party email service when SMTP is blocked and cautions that self-hosting requires continuing security and reputation work. A relay is not a workaround for fraudulent or unsolicited mail: you remain responsible for consent, content and account security.
Configure an authenticated relay on port 587
Use this path when the VPS hosts an application rather than a full mail service, or when your provider will not open port 25.

1. Create and verify the relay account
- Create an account with an SMTP relay service that supports authenticated submission and STARTTLS.
- Add the domain used in the
From:address and complete any ownership verification it requires. - Copy the relay’s DKIM public-key record exactly into your DNS. The relay normally supplies the selector, host name and TXT value.
- Add the relay’s authorization to your SPF record. Keep one SPF TXT record for the domain; merge mechanisms instead of publishing multiple SPF records.
2. Configure Postfix
The following illustrates the settings; replace the host and credentials with the values supplied by your relay.
relayhost = [smtp.relay.example]:587
smtp_sasl_auth_enable = yes
smtp_sasl_password_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/sasl_passwd
smtp_sasl_security_options = noanonymous
smtp_tls_security_level = encrypt
smtp_tls_CAfile = /etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt
Create /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd with the relay endpoint and credentials:
[smtp.relay.example]:587 [email protected]:REPLACE_WITH_PASSWORD
Protect the file, build the lookup database and reload Postfix:
chmod 600 /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd
postmap /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd
systemctl reload postfix
Distribution paths for the CA bundle differ; verify the path exists before reloading. Use the relay’s documented hostname so certificate validation matches the certificate. Port 587 is message submission and should negotiate STARTTLS; do not silently disable certificate verification to make a test pass.

journalctl -fu postfix
Confirm that Postfix authenticates, negotiates TLS and receives a 250-class acceptance from the relay. If the connection times out, test the relay host directly with nc -vz smtp.relay.example 587; the provider may block that submission port as well. Ask the relay whether it offers another authenticated endpoint or use the provider’s supported API rather than guessing a port.
4. Keep credentials and queue data safe
- Restrict the SASL password file to root and the Postfix account as appropriate for your distribution.
- Use a dedicated relay credential with the smallest practical permissions and rotate it if it appears in logs or source code.
- Monitor queue size and deferred reasons; a relay does not eliminate application bugs that generate duplicate or unwanted mail.
Prepare a VPS for direct server-to-server delivery
Request an unblock only when you genuinely need direct delivery and have prepared a stable identity. IONOS lists a valid FQDN, PTR and SPF as prerequisites for port-25 unblocking; PineRiver likewise requires an A record and aligned reverse DNS.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
1. Choose a permanent mail hostname
Use a name such as mail.example.net, not a changing cloud-assigned hostname. Publish an A record to the sending IPv4 address. Publish an AAAA record only when IPv6 connectivity, firewalling and reverse DNS are correctly configured.
2. Set reverse DNS (PTR)
Ask the VPS provider to set the sending IP’s PTR record to the mail hostname. Google’s Gmail sender guidance states: “The public IP address of a sending SMTP server must have a corresponding PTR record that resolves to a hostname.” The hostname must also resolve forward to the same sending IP; this forward-confirmed reverse DNS relationship is checked by many receivers.
3. Publish SPF
SPF authorizes the IP addresses or services allowed to use your envelope-from domain. A simple single-server policy might resemble v=spf1 ip4:203.0.113.10 -all; replace the documentation-only address with your real sender and include every legitimate relay. Do not create a second SPF TXT record for the same domain.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
4. Enable DKIM signing
Generate a key pair in your MTA or DKIM signer, keep the private key on the VPS, and publish the supplied selector’s public key under selector._domainkey.example.net. Sign outbound messages with the same organizational domain used by your visible From address whenever possible.
5. Publish DMARC
DMARC tells receivers how to handle messages that fail SPF and DKIM alignment and where to send aggregate or forensic reports. Start with a monitoring policy such as v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:[email protected], review legitimate senders, then tighten enforcement deliberately. Cloudflare notes that missing SPF or DMARC can lead to rejection or inconsistent delivery; Google recommends SPF, DKIM and DMARC together.
6. Request the provider exception
Give the provider your hostname, use case and sending IP, and confirm that PTR, forward DNS and SPF are already published. Ask whether the exception covers outbound TCP 25 specifically and whether separate IPv6 addresses require separate approval. Remember that a control-panel rule cannot override a centrally enforced block.
Authentication records and what each one proves
| Control | What it proves | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Forward A/AAAA and PTR | The sending IP has a stable, verifiable hostname and the hostname maps back to the IP. | That the message is authorized or wanted. |
| SPF | The envelope-from domain authorizes the connecting sender. | That the visible From domain is aligned, or that the content is reputable. |
| DKIM | The message was signed by a domain and was not altered after signing. | That the signer is trustworthy by itself. |
| DMARC | Receivers receive a policy for SPF/DKIM alignment failures and can report results. | Successful delivery to every mailbox. |
After a message arrives, open its original headers and inspect Authentication-Results. Look for spf=pass, dkim=pass and dmarc=pass, along with the authenticated domains. An SMTP 250 response proves acceptance by the next server, not inbox placement.
When mail connects but lands in spam
Separate transport success from reputation. Check the delivered headers first, then verify that the visible From domain, envelope-from domain and DKIM signing domain are aligned. Correct PTR, SPF, DKIM and DMARC failures before changing message wording or sending volume.
Google’s requirements include a specific threshold: senders delivering more than 5,000 messages per day to personal Gmail accounts must meet its sender requirements, effective 2024. That threshold applies to the stated Gmail audience and volume; it is not a universal rule for every recipient provider or every sender.
- Monitor deferred and bounced messages by SMTP status code.
- Remove invalid recipients and investigate complaint spikes before increasing volume.
- Keep the VPS, MTA and web application patched; a compromised account can damage an IP’s reputation quickly.
- Use a relay when you cannot continuously monitor reputation, abuse reports and queue behavior.
Symptom-to-fix troubleshooting table
| Symptom | Likely cause | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Timeout to several MX hosts on port 25 | Provider or upstream egress block, or a dropping firewall. | Check guest and cloud firewalls, then ask the provider about SMTP policy. Do not keep retrying the queue. |
| Immediate connection refusal | Destination refusal, local policy or an intermediate reset. | Test multiple MX hosts and inspect firewall counters and logs. |
| Relay on 587 times out | Submission port blocked or incorrect relay hostname. | Test the exact endpoint; consult the relay for an allowed endpoint or API. |
| “SASL authentication failed” | Wrong credentials, account restriction or an incorrect SASL map. | Verify the username format, password-map permissions and relay account status; run postmap after edits. |
| TLS certificate or STARTTLS error | Wrong hostname, missing CA bundle, clock skew or TLS inspection. | Use the relay’s certificate name, install current CA certificates and correct system time. |
| “Host or domain not found” | Broken resolver, missing MX or incorrect relay DNS. | Run dig against your configured resolvers and fix DNS before flushing the queue. |
| Remote server rejects for PTR/SPF/DKIM/DMARC | Identity or alignment is incomplete. | Correct DNS and signing, wait for propagation, then send a new test. |
| SMTP accepted, message in spam | Reputation, policy or content filtering. | Inspect Authentication-Results, bounces and complaint signals; consider a managed relay. |
Operational checks after the fix
- Set an alert for queue growth and repeated deferred deliveries.
- Review Postfix logs for authentication failures and unexpected outbound volume.
- Renew TLS certificates and keep the operating system, MTA and DKIM tooling patched.
- Document the provider’s unblock approval, the sending IPs, DNS records and relay credentials’ owner.
- Retest after changing DNS, firewall rules or IP addresses; reverse DNS and SPF changes may not be visible immediately to every resolver.
The practical decision is straightforward: if several MX hosts time out on port 25, prove the block with firewall and provider checks, then use an authenticated relay unless you have a strong reason to operate direct delivery. If direct delivery is required, establish forward-confirmed reverse DNS and SPF/DKIM/DMARC first, obtain the provider exception, and validate both SMTP transport and delivered-message authentication.
