To tame a stray cat in Minecraft, hold raw cod or raw salmon, approach it slowly, and feed it. A collar appearing around its neck confirms the cat is tamed.
How to tame a stray cat
- Find a stray cat. Minecraft’s official cat guide says cats can be found in well-populated villages and swamp huts.
- Hold raw cod or raw salmon. Either fish works for taming.
- Approach slowly. The guide gives no exact distance or guarantee that every approach will succeed, so move carefully rather than rushing toward the cat.
- Feed it the fish. When a collar appears around the cat’s neck, taming has succeeded.
- Choose whether it sits or follows. Interact with the tamed cat to make it sit; otherwise, it can follow you.
Is an ocelot the same as a cat?
No. A stray cat is the animal you tame with fish. Ocelots are a separate case: Mojang’s Bedrock 1.8.0 notes state that cats can be tamed using fish and ocelots are no longer tameable. Earlier Java snapshot notes also describe the cat-and-ocelot split. Don’t try to tame an ocelot as if it were a stray cat.
What tamed cats do
- Scare off creepers and phantoms. This is the behavior described in Minecraft’s official cat guide.
- May bring you a gift. After you sleep, a cat may bring a gift; it is a possibility, not a guaranteed reward.
- Sit or follow. Interact with your cat to make it sit, or leave it to follow you.
Cat variants
The official guide names these variants: black, British shorthair, calico, Jellie, Persian, ragdoll, red, Siamese, tabby, tuxedo, and white. It does not state the odds of finding any particular variant.
Edition and version notes
The official sources support the fish-taming method and the distinction between cats and ocelots. Java Edition 26.1 release notes discuss new cat sounds, but do not identify a change to taming. These sources do not establish that every edge case works identically across all editions and versions.
