To shut down your PS5 with the controller, press the PS button, open Power in the Control Center, then select Turn Off PS5. Wait for the power indicator to stop blinking and turn off before unplugging the console.
Turn off your PS5 with the controller
- Press the PS button on your controller to open the Control Center.
- Select Power.
- Choose Turn Off PS5—not Enter Rest Mode.
The screen may go blank during shutdown. The power indicator is the better guide: it blinks white while the PS5 is shutting down, then turns off when shutdown is complete. PlayStation’s power-saving instructions describe this procedure.
Turn off your PS5 using the console’s power button
Press and hold the PS5’s power button until the console beeps, then release it. The screen goes blank and the indicator flashes white during shutdown. Wait until the indicator turns off before disconnecting power. PlayStation lists this as an alternative to using the menu in its official shutdown guidance.
Wait for the indicator to turn off before unplugging
Do not disconnect the AC power cord while the power indicator is lit or blinking. PlayStation warns that doing so may cause data loss, data corruption, or damage to the console. Wait until the indicator is completely off; a blank screen alone does not confirm that shutdown has finished. See PlayStation’s power-saving guidance.

Turn Off PS5 or Enter Rest Mode?
Turn Off PS5 completes shutdown. Rest Mode is a low-power state, not a full shutdown; depending on your settings, the console can charge controllers or accessories, download updates, and keep a game suspended. The indicator is orange in Rest Mode and off after shutdown. PlayStation explains Rest Mode charging in its controller and accessory charging guide.
- Choose Turn Off PS5 when you want the console fully shut down.
- Choose Enter Rest Mode when you want to use supported low-power features, such as keeping a game suspended or charging a controller.
