You can’t safely tame a giant panda as a private individual. Pandas are bears, and adult pandas are powerful and potentially dangerous. Smithsonian’s National Zoo says its staff do not enter an adult panda’s enclosure. What looks like a calm, familiar animal at a zoo is receiving specialist care under controlled conditions—not becoming a pet.
Can you tame a panda?
No. Do not approach, touch, feed, or try to handle a giant panda. Watching one in a zoo does not make it safe to get close: the barrier and trained staff are part of how the animal and the public are protected. The Smithsonian’s National Zoo says adult pandas are very strong and potentially dangerous, and that keepers never go inside an adult panda’s enclosure. This is not a matter of finding the right treat or earning an animal’s trust. Panda husbandry is professional care in a managed habitat, with trained staff, monitored routines, and safety controls. It is not a household or public-facing taming technique.
What do pandas eat, and should visitors feed them?
Giant pandas in the wild eat almost exclusively bamboo. A Smithsonian Magazine account of National Zoo keeper Suzanne Lally’s work says adult pandas eat between 26 and 84 pounds of bamboo a day, about 90% of their regular diet. That is a reported per-animal range, not a feeding recommendation for visitors. The National Zoo does not accept bamboo donations from visitors; do not offer a panda food.

How do zoo keepers work with pandas?
Keepers build predictable routines gradually and watch for signs of stress or discomfort. Smithsonian keeper Lally explained that staff want pandas to feel safe around the people they see most often, because trust helps keep care as stress-free as possible. That relationship is built within professional care, not through public contact.
Voluntary training for health checks and daily care
At the Smithsonian, keepers use positive reinforcement: a panda may be asked to perform a behavior and rewarded with food or a preferred toy when it participates. The animal can decline or walk away. Trained behaviors can help with weighing, moving between indoor and outdoor areas for cleaning, and veterinary checks. Smithsonian’s 2022 program overview describes pandas voluntarily presenting body parts for examination, putting an arm through a sleeve for blood pressure checks or blood draws, offering their belly for ultrasound, climbing onto a scale, and opening their mouths for dental checks. Some behaviors take months or years to establish.

Enrichment is part of managed care
Care teams also use enrichment to encourage natural behaviors such as exploring and foraging. The National Zoo describes toys, new scents, habitat changes, puzzle feeders, and training sessions. Its keeper-care article says the pandas there were offered four or five types of enrichment each day; that is a description of this zoo’s program, not a universal standard. The zoo also notes that pandas are mostly solitary and may be shifted between habitats to mimic scent-marking and overlapping territories.

What can you do instead?
- Observe from visitor areas. Follow the zoo’s rules and stay behind any barriers; do not attempt contact or feeding.
- Watch through an authorized remote stream, if one is available. Viewing schedules and access can change, so check the zoo’s official channels.
- Learn about conservation through a zoo or reputable conservation organization. Use official channels if you want to support their work.
- If you want animal-care experience, start locally. Volunteering with an animal shelter or veterinary clinic can offer appropriate experience; it does not provide a route to handling pandas.
