A sea star’s arms usually blend into the body around a central axis. A brittle star has a more sharply defined central disc, with long, flexible arms attached to it. If you can observe movement, sea stars commonly crawl using tube feet on their underside, while brittle stars commonly row or drag themselves with their arms. These are useful group-level clues, not a guarantee of species-level identification.
What to look at first
Check the shape of the center before counting arms or judging color. A brittle star’s central disc tends to stand out clearly from its arms. A sea star’s arms usually transition more gradually into the body, so the whole animal has a less sharply separated outline. Smithsonian Ocean describes brittle-star centers as disc-shaped and their arms as often serpentine.

Next, look at the arms. Brittle-star arms are commonly slender and flexible; sea-star arms are often broader or less distinctly separated from the center. These descriptions are general rather than rules for every species. Basket stars, which are brittle stars, can have branching arms.

If the animal is moving, behavior can make the distinction easier. Sea stars commonly move by coordinating tube feet underneath. Brittle stars commonly propel themselves by rowing or dragging with their arms. Smithsonian’s Q?rius resource notes that brittle stars can switch which arms row.

Compare the main clues

The center, arm attachment, and movement together are more useful than any single visual detail. Smithsonian’s Q?rius description attributes brittle-star arm flexibility to calcium-carbonate ossicles connected by ball-and-socket joints; side plates can provide traction.
Identify one from a photo or at the shore
- Find the central area. Decide whether the center is a distinct disc or blends into the arms and body.
- Trace where the arms begin. Clearly defined attachments to a disc support brittle star; arms that grade into the body support sea star.
- Compare the arms. Long, slender, flexible-looking arms are a useful brittle-star clue. Broader arms that merge into the body are more consistent with a sea star.
- Watch movement if it is already occurring. Tube-foot crawling supports sea star; rowing or dragging with the arms supports brittle star. Do not handle an animal to make it move.
- Use other details only as supporting clues. Arm count, color, and a visible madreporite do not settle the identification by themselves.
A photograph may not show the underside or movement, so use the visible center and arm attachment rather than expecting every clue to be available. For a species-level identification, geographic location and a regional key may be needed.

Why five arms and color can mislead
Five arms are common in both groups, so counting five does not establish that an animal is a sea star. Sea stars can have six or seven arms, and some have many more. Smithsonian Ocean’s educational overview, published in April 2022, gives broad estimates of close to 2,000 sea-star species and over 2,000 brittle-star species. Those figures are not regional counts or current census totals.

That guide is regional, and NOAA says its identifications, names, and descriptions may change as further information is collected.

What a madreporite can—and cannot—tell you
A madreporite, a visible part of the water-vascular system, is often visible to the naked eye on the upper side of a sea star, according to Smithsonian Ocean. It can support an identification when it is clearly visible, but it should not be the sole test. The group-wide sources cited here do not establish a complete comparison of madreporite position in brittle stars.

Sea stars and brittle stars are both echinoderms, the broader animal group that also includes sea urchins, sand dollars, and sea cucumbers. Echinoderms have a water-vascular system. In sea stars, coordinated tube feet support movement; brittle stars’ characteristic arm rowing provides a contrasting movement clue.

Their similar overall appearance can make the groups easy to confuse, especially when a still image hides movement or the underside. Their different body plans explain why the center is the most useful place to start: a brittle star has a distinct disc and flexible arms, while a sea star’s arms tend to flow into the body outline.

Broken arms and other identification traps
- A missing or broken arm does not decide the group. Brittle stars can shed arms as a defense and later regrow them; Smithsonian Ocean also describes regeneration in both groups.
- Do not treat the arm count as a key. Sea stars vary in arm number, and a common five-armed shape is not exclusive to one group.
- Do not treat a local species guide as universal. NOAA’s Stellwagen Bank guide concerns a particular sanctuary and says its descriptions and identifications may change as more information is gathered.
- Do not make a species claim from one broad clue. The features here distinguish groups; a more specific identification may require location and a regional identification key.
