There is no single visual check that proves a Magic: The Gathering booster box is genuine or has never been tampered with. Wizards of the Coast recommends buying from a reputable dealer and checking for plastic sealing and a Wizards of the Coast stamp. Treat those as screening cues—not a guarantee. If the box or transaction raises concern, stop before opening it, preserve the evidence, and use the seller’s return process.
What to check before deciding a box was resealed
Wizards of the Coast’s current guidance recommends buying from a reputable dealer, looking for a booster box sealed in plastic with a Wizards of the Coast stamp, and checking individual pack seals for signs of resealing. The cues can help you decide whether to investigate further, but the guidance does not establish a comprehensive forensic test for current booster boxes.
Start with the seller and listing
- Check the seller’s identity and reputation, the exact set, product type, and language, and whether the listing’s photos and description match the item being offered.
- Read the return terms and any fine print. Wizards specifically advises buyers to read auction listings carefully so they understand exactly what is being sold.
- Consider a suspiciously low price or vague product description a reason to pause and ask questions—not proof of fraud.
Wizards says stores displaying its Authorized Internet Retailer logo have been approved to sell sealed products online in North America. That statement is specific to North America; do not assume the approval applies to sellers or regions elsewhere. Wizards of the Coast’s current buyer guidance recommends using a reputable dealer.
Inspect the unopened box
Without opening the box, check whether it is sealed in plastic and bears a Wizards of the Coast stamp, the box-level cues named in the current guidance. Also note conspicuous damage, disturbed wrapping, or a mismatch between the box and the listing. These observations may justify contacting the seller, but none alone proves that a box was resealed: shipping damage and packaging variation can complicate visual judgments.

If the box is already open, inspect the pack seals
Wizards advises checking that booster packs have not been resealed and looking for vertical heat striations on their seals. This is a check of individual packs, not a reason to open an otherwise unopened collectible box just to inspect them. A seal that looks unusual is a reason to investigate, not a definitive diagnosis by itself.
Why older shrink-wrap advice needs context
In its April 26, 2004 article “Buyer Beware,” Wizards described counterfeit boxes and repacks, including overwrap with white Wizards logos and examples where genuine pack seals had vertical heat striations while the counterfeits discussed generally had fewer, horizontal striations. It also described repacks involving old boxes filled with other cards and shrink-wrapped again.

Those observations describe the examples and packaging of that period; they are not a universal specification for every current set or product. Do not conclude that a present-day box is fake because it lacks a detail described in 2004, or genuine because it matches one. Use the current checks—seller, plastic seal, Wizards stamp, and pack-seal inspection where applicable—as cautious screening cues. Read the historical “Buyer Beware” article.
What to do if you still suspect tampering
- Do not open the box. If the concern comes from the seller, listing, or outer packaging, preserve the item in the condition in which you received it.
- Document what you have. Keep the box, labels, receipt, listing, seller messages, and clear photographs of the packaging and any suspicious areas.
- Contact the seller through the official channel. Use the marketplace’s return or dispute process where applicable, and follow its deadlines and evidence requirements.
- Report suspected counterfeit product to Wizards. Wizards provides a reporting route, but cautions that it cannot compensate victims of scams. Its current guidance on verifying legitimate products explains the checks and reporting option.
If you discover a problem after opening the box
Wizards’ Product Replacement policy covers certain eligible defects in retail-purchased products; it is not a guarantee that a suspected reseal will qualify. Eligibility depends on the product, defect, packaging condition, available supported products, and the policy’s process. The policy asks customers in relevant cases to retain and return damaged cards and packaging, and says photographs and production codes can help.
