A PS5 fan may get louder during some games or applications because it is temporarily running faster to cool the console. Noise alone cannot tell you whether the fan is working properly. Check the console’s ventilation and accessible vents first; an overheating warning or repeated overheating is a stronger reason to stop and seek help.
What PS5 fan noise can—and cannot—tell you
Sony says the cooling fan may run louder than usual during some games and applications while it works faster to cool the system. A temporary change in sound, by itself, does not mean the fan has failed. Sony’s PS5 noise guidance does not give a sound level that separates normal operation from a fault.
Sound is not a definitive test: hearing the fan does not confirm that every part of the cooling system is functioning correctly, and a quiet console alone does not prove that it is not. Sony’s user-facing guidance does not describe an external test that conclusively confirms internal fan rotation.
Check the PS5’s placement and airflow
- Keep at least 10 cm of free space around each side of the console, as Sony recommends.
- Make sure the sides and rear vents are not blocked, and avoid placing the console in a cramped space.
- Avoid long-fibre carpets or rugs, which can obstruct ventilation.
- Keep dust from accumulating in or around the vents.
Clean accessible vents safely
- Turn off the PS5 and disconnect the AC power cable from the rear before cleaning.
- Use a low-powered vacuum to remove dust accumulated in and around the air vents, following Sony’s cleaning guidance.
- Reconnect the console and monitor whether the problem continues during use.
This is an external vent-cleaning step, not a way to inspect every internal component or confirm that the fan is healthy. Avoid treating disassembly as a routine first check. iFixit’s internal overheating troubleshooting discusses checking whether the fan spins correctly, is connected, and receives power; those are repair-level checks rather than Sony’s basic cleaning instructions.

What to do if the PS5 overheats
If the console displays an overheating warning or repeatedly overheats, stop playing and turn it off. Let it cool, move it to a well-ventilated location, and check that its vents are not blocked. Sony gives these steps in its power indicator guidance. If the issue persists, use PlayStation Repairs.
A warning or shutdown does not, by itself, identify the fan as the failed component. If ventilation and accessible vent cleaning do not resolve recurring trouble, use official support or a qualified repair service rather than guessing at an internal fault.
