Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11A Steam account may be compromised if you find an unknown authorized device, an unrequested password or email change, unauthorized trades or purchases, or messages you did not send. A single Steam Guard prompt is not proof of hacking: new browsers, deleted cookies, privacy tools, and shared computers can also trigger authentication requests.
If malware may be involved, use a known-clean device, secure your email account first, and then recover or change your Steam password. Resetting Steam on an infected computer could expose the new password again.
The strongest signs your Steam account was hacked
| Sign | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Unknown device in Authorized Devices | Strong evidence that another device or session has access, although shared computers and remembered devices can complicate the picture. | Use Sign out everywhere, then change your passwords. |
| Unrecognized email, phone, password, or account-detail change | Someone may have taken control or attempted recovery. | Secure your email and use Steam’s official recovery process if necessary. |
| Unknown purchases, wallet activity, gifts, trades, market listings, or inventory changes | Strong evidence of unauthorized access. | Cancel pending transactions if possible and contact your payment provider about unauthorized charges. |
| Friends received scam messages or links from you | Your account may be sending messages under someone else’s control. | Warn friends, report the activity, and secure the account immediately. |
| Unexpected Steam Guard codes or login approvals | Someone may be attempting to sign in, but a code alone does not prove they succeeded. | Do not approve or forward the code. Change your passwords and sign out everywhere. |
| You can no longer log in | An attacker may have changed the password or contact details. | Use Steam’s official stolen-account recovery flow. |
Steam recommends checking Authorized Devices and signing out everywhere when you suspect compromise.
How to check your Steam account safely
- Open Steam directly or type an official Steam address yourself. Do not investigate through a link in a suspicious message.
- Open Account Details and confirm the registered email address and phone number.
- Go to Manage Steam Guard and review Authorized Devices. If anything is unfamiliar, use Sign out everywhere or deauthorize devices.
- Review recent purchases, wallet activity, trades, Community Market listings, gifts, inventory changes, and sent messages.
- Check your profile name, avatar, privacy settings, friend list, and linked services for changes you did not make.
- Search the associated email inbox and spam folder for unexpected Steam password resets, login notices, or security changes.
Labels may differ slightly between the desktop client, browser, and mobile app. An unfamiliar display name alone is weak evidence because Steam profile names can be changed. Repeated new-device prompts can also result from deleted cookies or browser-cleaning software; Steam documents these benign causes in its Steam Guard guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
What to do if you can still log in
- Stop using suspicious links. Close scam chats and do not enter credentials into a site reached from a message.
- Switch to a known-clean device if you installed a cheat, crack, fake demo, mod manager, inventory tool, or other untrusted program.
- Sign out everywhere from Steam’s security settings.
- Secure the associated email account. Change its password to a unique one and enable the provider’s two-factor authentication. Email access can enable Steam password resets.
- Change the Steam password to a long, unique password that is not used elsewhere.
- Enable Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator. Steam describes the mobile authenticator as its strongest Steam Guard option. During setup, store the recovery code offline in a secure place.
- Scan the computer. On supported Windows installations, Microsoft Defender Antivirus is built in. Use one primary real-time antivirus product; Microsoft warns that competing products can conflict. A second-opinion scanner can be useful when malware is suspected.
- Review money and items. Check payment methods, pending trades, market listings, and purchases. Contact the card issuer or payment provider promptly about unauthorized charges.
- Warn your friends that earlier messages or links may have come from an attacker, and report suspicious accounts or messages through Steam.
Steam’s stolen-account guidance recommends scanning the computer and securing the email account before changing or recovering Steam credentials.
If you cannot log in
Use Steam’s official “My Steam Account was stolen and I need help recovering it” route. Steam may request ownership information such as original account details, purchase records, payment information, or product keys.
Do not negotiate with the attacker, pay a supposed recovery agent, or follow instructions sent through Discord, Steam Chat, email, or another unofficial channel. Account changes do not necessarily make recovery impossible, but Steam may need to verify ownership.

How Steam accounts are commonly stolen
- Phishing: A fake Steam login page captures your password and possibly your Steam Guard code.
- Fake support messages: Scammers impersonate Valve staff, tournament organizers, developers, friends, or trading partners.
- Email compromise: An attacker accesses the email account linked to Steam and resets the password.
- Credential reuse: A password exposed by another service is tried on Steam.
- Malware or keyloggers: Cheats, cracks, fake demos, mod tools, and inventory utilities can steal credentials or use an already-authorized session.
- Shared or public computers: A session may remain signed in, or credentials may be captured.
- Stolen Steam Guard files or recovery codes: These can help an attacker bypass normal account protections.
What Steam Guard protects—and what it cannot
Steam Guard adds another authentication layer: an unfamiliar device may require an email code or mobile approval. Mobile-authenticator codes refresh automatically every 30 seconds, and Steam describes the mobile authenticator as the best level of Steam account security. The cited Steam help page lists iOS 13.0 or later and Android 5.0 or later for the mobile authenticator.
It is not an absolute guarantee. A phishing site can capture both a password and a current code. A compromised email account can enable password recovery. Malware on an already-authorized computer may operate without triggering a new-login challenge. Never give anyone your password, Steam Guard code, recovery code, or Steam Guard files. Steam’s mobile-authenticator guidance explains recovery-code handling.
Important: real Steam Support will not contact you this way
Steam Support does not ask for your password, Steam Guard files, recovery codes, or login codes. It does not resolve supposed reports through Friends, Discord, or unsolicited chat messages. The “you were accidentally reported and will be banned unless you contact this person” story is a common scam pattern.

Can stolen Steam items or money be recovered?
Pending transactions are the most time-sensitive. Steam’s Trade and Market Holds can delay item transfers for up to 15 days, giving you time to identify and cancel unauthorized pending activity where Steam allows it. Steam also says items leaving an account may be held for up to 15 days when the mobile authenticator has not protected the account for at least seven days.

Troubleshooting common situations
“I received a Steam Guard code I did not request.”
Do not approve the login or forward the code. From a known-clean device, change the Steam and email passwords, sign out everywhere, and scan the computer. The code indicates an attempted sign-in, not necessarily a successful one.
“Steam keeps asking for a new-device code.”
Check whether you are using a new device, private browsing, deleted cookies, strict privacy settings, or cleanup software. If the prompts continue alongside unknown devices, account changes, or suspicious activity, treat the account as potentially compromised.
“My friend sent me a suspicious Steam link.”
Do not click it. Contact the friend through another trusted channel and report the message. Change your password if you clicked the link, entered credentials, approved a login, or see other evidence of compromise; otherwise, the friend’s account may be the one that was hijacked.

“I installed a cheat, crack, or inventory tool.”
Disconnect the suspect device if active theft is occurring. Use another device to secure email and Steam, then run a full malware scan. Remove suspicious programs and browser extensions. If credentials continue to be stolen or malware cannot be confidently removed, back up only personal documents and consider resetting or reinstalling the operating system.
“I lost my authenticator phone.”
Use Steam’s official recovery options and the recovery code saved during authenticator setup. Do not send that code to another person.
After you recover the account
- Change Steam and email passwords again if they were entered while the device may have been infected.
- Use unique passwords and consider a password manager to generate and store them.
- Keep Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator enabled and store its recovery code securely offline.
- Remove suspicious extensions and recently installed software.
- Update the operating system, browser, Steam client, and security software.
- Review payment methods, transaction history, trades, inventory, and privacy settings.
- Warn friends and report scam accounts.
- Keep evidence such as screenshots, email headers, transaction IDs, timestamps, and URLs.
Security software can help find malware, but it cannot reverse phishing, secure a compromised email account, invalidate every stolen session, or guarantee item recovery. The free protections that matter most are a unique password, email-account MFA, Steam Guard, cautious downloads, and using only official Steam recovery channels.
