The strongest assessment combines the file’s source, its dimensions and metadata, comparisons with other copies, and visual or technical signs of resampling. Treat each finding as evidence with competing explanations—not as an automatic verdict.
Start with the original and its source
Keep the highest-quality file you can obtain and note where it came from. A social-media preview or repeatedly saved copy may have been resized, recompressed, or stripped of metadata, making it a poor stand-in for the original.

Look for an independent comparison: the game’s own capture, another copy from the same post, or an image published by a trusted game source. Compare dimensions and crop before judging sharpness or detail. Two images can look different simply because one has been cropped, scaled, or recompressed.

A matching cryptographic hash can show that two files are identical, but it cannot establish whether the scene depicted is truthful. The FBI distinguishes file integrity from image authenticity and recommends evaluating image structure and content together (FBI forensic guidance).

Check whether the image may have been upscaled
Compare dimensions with a known capture
Upscaling means increasing an image’s pixel dimensions through resampling. NIST defines resampling as “changing the size and/or resolution of the image by adding or subtracting pixels through interpolation” (NIST glossary). If a file is larger than a reliably known capture from the same game and setup, it may have been enlarged—but dimensions alone do not show how or why. The image might also come from a different output resolution, crop, or capture pipeline.
Look for interpolation patterns
When an image is resized, rotated, or stretched, pixels are mapped onto a new sampling grid. That process can create correlations among neighboring pixels, sometimes in periodic patterns. Such patterns can be evidence of resampling, though later editing or compression may weaken or obscure them. A screenshot that looks unusually smooth or sharp is not, by itself, a technical finding. Inspect metadata, but treat it as context
If metadata is present, examine fields such as Software, CreatorTool, XMP history fields (HistoryAction, HistorySoftwareAgent, and HistoryWhen), ModifyDate, dimensions, and any embedded thumbnail. These may help reconstruct how a file was handled. A tag naming editing software or a later modification date is not proof of deceptive alteration: ordinary saving and image-management operations can write those fields.
Missing camera EXIF data is unsurprising for a screenshot or screen recording; it is not a camera photograph. Sharing services and apps can remove or rewrite metadata and re-encode image content, so the file available to you may not preserve its earlier history. The practical ExifMeta guide to image metadata describes useful fields and these handling limitations. Metadata is a clue, not an authentication stamp.

Check the image for local inconsistencies
Inspect the whole image and compare suspicious areas with similar parts of the scene. Look for anomalies in:
- Edges and fine textures, including details that appear sharper, softer, or more repetitive than comparable areas.
- Lighting, shading, and shadows that do not fit nearby objects or the apparent light sources.
- Color balance or palette that changes abruptly in a local region.
- Perspective, focus, and resolution that differ from surrounding content without an obvious in-game explanation.
These are inspection categories, not a checklist that proves tampering. In-game effects, depth of field, motion blur, level-of-detail changes, and ordinary compression can all create visual differences. The FBI’s guidance likewise treats texture, shading and shadow, color, lighting, perspective, focus, and resolution as areas to evaluate in context (FBI standards and guidelines).

Weigh the clues together
Interpret findings in combination rather than turning one clue into a verdict. Ask how close each copy is to the original, whether dimensions and crop match, whether metadata is consistent, whether technical traces suggest resampling, and whether any visual anomaly is local and independently corroborated.
Metadata signatures, image-processing analysis, and device artifacts can complement one another, but transfer or re-encoding may compromise metadata. A 2023 paper discusses these approaches and their limitations (A Forensic Methodology for Detecting Image Manipulations). The available evidence does not support a universal detection rate or a guarantee that any detector can authenticate a particular game screenshot.

Describe what you found precisely
Separate observations from conclusions. For example: “This file is larger than the known capture and shows patterns consistent with resampling” states evidence and interpretation without claiming the image is fake. Add any ordinary explanations that remain plausible, such as a different capture resolution, routine editing, or re-encoding during sharing. A firm claim about authenticity needs stronger corroboration than a single visual impression or metadata field.
