Buy a live-service game only when the version available now is worth its price to you—and you can accept the risks of ongoing online service. Judge its current gameplay, performance, matchmaking, costs and server dependence rather than treating a roadmap as content already delivered. No public signal can guarantee how long a particular game will be supported.
Start with the game you can play today
Ask whether the core loop, genre, pace, difficulty and social requirements suit you without relying on promised updates. Look at what is playable now, not only at launch trailers, future roadmaps or a large list of planned features. A low sale price does not make a poor gameplay fit worthwhile, and future content is not part of the current value until it arrives.

For the exact platform you plan to use, read recent player reviews and discussion. Focus on crashes, performance, whether advertised features work, and the quality of matchmaking. Older reviews or feedback from another platform may describe a different state of the game.

Match population signals to your play
Recent queue times and active community discussion can help you judge whether the modes you want are viable at your likely play hours and in your region. A single concurrent-player count cannot tell you whether queues will be healthy everywhere, on every platform, or at every hour. A solo player and a competitive group may also need different population signals.

Player activity matters to publishers, too. In the Game Developers Conference’s 2025 State of the Game Industry report, developers most often cited a stable concurrent-user base as a measure of live-service success (62% of respondents), followed by daily active users (40%) and monetized players (32%). Those are survey responses about developer measures—not consumer thresholds that establish whether a game is safe to buy.
Check which features depend on a live service
Read the publisher’s current FAQ, terms and service notices. Separate the features you care about: online multiplayer, account login, progression, purchased items and offline modes may not all have the same requirements. Ask what would remain playable if servers stopped operating; do not assume a shutdown has the same effect on every game.

PlayStation’s Destruction AllStars feature page distinguishes single-player events from 16-player online matches, which require internet access and PlayStation Plus. A later PlayStation service notice says multiplayer was already offline because of technical issues, virtual currency would be removed from sale on May 26, 2026, and all server support would end on November 25, 2026. The notice says returning players may retain access to Arcade Mode single-player challenges afterward, although functionality and player experience may be affected. It is a useful example of why buyers should check individual features and current notices rather than treating “shutdown” as a single outcome.
Account for paid currency and progression
Virtual currency and digital benefits are exposed to the game’s service lifecycle. Before paying, check whether currency expires, whether it can still be spent if service changes, and whether it is refundable. The Fairplay report Getting Played – The True Cost of Virtual Currency recounts that Niantic shut down Harry Potter: Wizards Unite in 2022 and that purchased Gold was not refunded following the shutdown announcement. That is a documented example, not a rule for every publisher or a prediction about another game.

Distinguish a change in operator from a closure notice
An announced transition in who runs a game is a reason to follow official updates, but it does not by itself establish that the game is closing or that access will be lost. For example, an official Throne and Liberty update said western live operations would transition to FirstSpark Games/NC beginning in Q4 2026; the notice did not say the game was shutting down.

Compare the current price with the content available today and the time you realistically expect to play. Include the base game, any required subscription, season pass, expansions and optional currency. A game can be worth buying without spending on optional purchases, but only if the base experience meets your needs.

Read the refund terms for the exact seller and purchase channel before buying, and check them again before launching or purchasing add-ons. Rules vary by storefront. EA’s published policy, for example, allows eligible requests within 24 hours after first launch or within 14 days of purchase if the game has not been launched. A limited 72-hour window applies when a new EA game purchased within 30 days of release cannot be played for technical reasons within EA’s control. EA says separately purchased DLC and currency are not refundable through this policy. These are EA policy terms, not general consumer-law rules; for purchases from another storefront or retailer, EA directs buyers to that seller’s refund policy.
Compare candidates against the same criteria
If you are choosing between games, weigh the features you intend to use rather than relying on popularity alone. A checklist makes different kinds of risk easier to compare:
- Gameplay fit: Is the current core loop enjoyable for your preferred pace, genre and difficulty?
- Technical state: Do recent reviews for your platform report acceptable performance, working features and manageable crashes?
- Matchmaking: Are queues and community activity promising for your region, platform, modes and likely play times?
- Service dependence: Which desired features need servers, an account or a subscription, and what is the offline fallback?
- Support signals: Are updates and official notices giving you useful information about the service’s present state? A roadmap is not a guarantee of future support.
- Total likely spend: What will you pay for the base game and any subscription or optional content you actually expect to use?
- Exit terms: What does the seller’s current refund policy allow for this purchase channel?
These factors reflect the uncertainties of the category, not a prediction that every service will end soon. The GDC’s 2025 report describes Fortnite, Warframe and Genshin Impact as continuing to engage players with new content and experiences, while identifying Concord, Anthem and Redfall as failures or missed opportunities. The outcomes show why a genre-wide promise about longevity is unreliable; they do not tell you how long any other title will last.
Make the decision
- Buy if the experience available now is worth the cost and the service risks are acceptable to you.
- Wait if essential features are unfinished, matchmaking looks weak for your needs, or the purchase only makes sense if promised content arrives.
- Skip if the core loop or monetization already feels like a poor fit.
For context, GDC’s 2025 survey reflects developers rather than buyers: 13% of respondents said they wanted to develop a live-service game as their next title, 42% said no, 29% said “don’t know/not applicable,” and 16% said they already developed live-service games. Among AAA developer respondents, 33% said they worked on live-service games. These figures describe surveyed industry attitudes; they are not a scorecard for an individual game or a forecast of its future.
