How to Tell Whether a Move Is Physical or Special in Pokémon FireRed

FireRed uses a type-based physical/special split: Normal, Fighting, Flying, Poison, Ground, Rock, Bug, Ghost and Steel are physical; eight other types are special.

In Pokémon FireRed, a damaging move’s type determines whether it is physical or special. Physical moves use the attacker’s Attack against the target’s Defense; special moves use Special Attack against Special Defense.

Which move types are physical or special in FireRed?

FireRed uses Generation III’s type-based system. Every damaging move of a given type shares that type’s category:

Physical types Special types
Normal Fire
Fighting Water
Flying Grass
Poison Electric
Ground Psychic
Rock Ice
Bug Dragon
Ghost Dark
Steel

This split applies to damaging moves. For example, Fire-type Blast Burn is special, while Flying-type Aerial Ace is physical.

How do you use the category to judge damage?

  1. Identify the move’s type. Use the type shown for the move, not its animation or whether it appears to make contact.
  2. Determine its category from the table. In FireRed, all damaging moves of that type use the same category.
  3. Compare the relevant stats. A physical move uses the Pokémon’s Attack and the opponent’s Defense. A special move uses Special Attack and the opponent’s Special Defense.
  4. Consider power and type effectiveness, too. Category tells you which stats are compared; it does not by itself tell you which move will deal more damage.

Why do modern move lists sometimes disagree?

Generation IV introduced categories assigned to individual moves rather than determined by type. As a result, a current-generation database may label a move differently from how FireRed treats it. Check that a move listing is for Generation III, or apply the type-based table above.
