How to Tell Whether a Nintendo Switch Is V1 or V2

HAC-001 identifies the original standard Switch; HAC-001(-01) identifies the revised model. Here’s where to check and why battery life alone isn’t proof.

Check the model number on the console: HAC-001 is the original standard Nintendo Switch, commonly called V1, while HAC-001(-01) is the revised standard model, commonly called V2. If the label is hard to read, use the serial number as a regional cross-check. Battery life can offer context, but it cannot reliably identify a used console.

Check the model number on the console

Turn the Switch over and look for the printed model number. For the standard Nintendo Switch, the distinction is:

  • HAC-001: original revision, commonly called V1.
  • HAC-001(-01): revised revision, commonly called V2.

Nintendo uses these model identifiers in its battery-life guidance. The model number is the most direct way to tell the revisions apart; “V1” and “V2” are common shorthand rather than the identifiers printed by Nintendo.

Find the serial number if the label is unclear

Nintendo says the serial number is on a white sticker at the bottom of the console. If that sticker is missing or unreadable, open System Settings, select System, then Serial Information, as described in Nintendo’s serial-number instructions.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Serial prefixes depend on region, so do not treat one prefix as a universal rule:

  • Americas: Nintendo maps XAW serials to HAC-001 and XKW serials to HAC-001(-01) in its battery guidance.
  • South Africa: Nintendo says a serial beginning with XK indicates a model with improved battery life, in its improved-battery identification guidance. That regional guidance is broader than the Americas XKW mapping, so use the model number when available.

Use battery-life estimates only as supporting context

Nintendo of America estimates 2.5 to 6.5 hours for HAC-001 and 4.5 to 9 hours for HAC-001(-01). These are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed results: runtime varies with the game or software, functions in use, and other conditions. Nintendo also notes that battery duration declines over time.

Nintendo Switch with Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy‑Con V2 (Red & Blue Switch)
  • Nintendo Switch Console (V2) with Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy-Con (Renewed).
  • Professionally renewed, tested, and inspected to ensure proper functionality and reliable performance.
  • Console is cleaned inside and out and verified for gameplay, connectivity, and system performance.
  • Supports TV mode, tabletop mode, and handheld mode for flexible gameplay.
  • May include accessories required for operation. See condition notes for details.

That makes runtime a poor way to classify a used console. A V1 with light use may outlast a worn V2, and settings and software affect how quickly either unit drains. Nintendo’s general battery note says about 800 charge cycles corresponds to a battery declining to about 80% of a new system’s capacity; it describes this as normal, not as a revision-identification test.

Buying a used Switch? Verify the console itself

Nintendo’s improved-battery page includes packaging examples and recommends checking the serial on the box-window sticker or console. Treat the box and seller’s listing as supporting clues, not proof: when possible, inspect the console’s own model number or serial number and confirm that it matches the claim.

Make sure it is a standard Switch

V1 and V2 refer to revisions of the standard Switch, not every console in the Switch family. Nintendo lists the standard model as HAC-001, Switch Lite as HDH-001, and Switch OLED as HEG-001 in its Switch support overview. If the number is HDH-001 or HEG-001, you are looking at a different model rather than a V1/V2 standard Switch revision.
