It Takes Two is a co-op-only game, so you need another player. On one computer, select local co-op for split-screen play; EA says this works offline. On two PCs, play online and invite your friend. If only one of you owns the full game, the other can use the free Friend’s Pass, but the full game is needed to continue beyond Chapter 1.

Choose how you’ll play together

Setup What you need How it works
One PC, local co-op One installed copy of the game Choose local co-op. The game displays split-screen, and EA says couch co-op works without an internet connection.
Two PCs, online co-op Both players online; one full-game owner for play beyond Chapter 1 The owner invites the other player from the game’s main menu. The guest can use Friend’s Pass if they do not own the game.
Steam Remote Play Together The Steam version and a Steam friend Steam lists Remote Play Together as an option. EA says an EA account is not required for this play method.

Play on one PC with local co-op

  1. Install and start It Takes Two.
  2. Select local co-op from the game’s menu and have both players join.

Local play uses a shared computer and split-screen presentation. EA says it does not require an internet connection or an EA account. The official pages cited here do not specify required controller hardware.

Play online on two PCs with Friend’s Pass

Friend’s Pass lets a player join someone who owns the full game without buying another full copy. Both players must be online at the same time. The full-game owner sends the invitation from the game’s main menu. On Steam, the current Friend’s Pass version supports invitations through the Steam friends list; the EA App version uses EA invites.

  1. If the invited player does not own the game, download It Takes Two Friend’s Pass on Steam or get it from the relevant platform store.
  2. Start the game and have the owner send an invite from the main menu. For Steam Friend’s Pass, the owner can also invite through the Steam friends list.
  3. Have the invited player accept the invitation and join. Keep both PCs online during online play.

If neither player owns the full game, EA says both can use Friend’s Pass to try the first chapter. To continue beyond that chapter, one player must own the full game.

Use Steam Remote Play Together

Steam lists Remote Play Together for It Takes Two. This is distinct from standard online co-op invitations: it streams a local co-op session from one player’s PC to a Steam friend. EA says an EA account is not required for Steam Remote Play Together. For standard online play through EA servers, an EA account is required.

The Steam version no longer needs the EA App launcher. However, EA says an EA account is still required to connect to EA servers for online play. Local co-op and Steam Remote Play Together do not require an EA account.

Planning to play across PC and console?

EA’s official pages currently conflict on cross-platform eligibility. The Friend’s Pass feature page says cross-generation play is supported but cross-platform play is not, while a newer EA Help article lists PC as eligible for cross-play with several platforms. The instructions above cover PC-to-PC play; before arranging PC-to-console co-op, check EA Help’s current compatibility guidance.
