Check the shiny icon above the Pokémon’s CP during the encounter. Niantic identifies that in-game icon as the confirmation that the Pokémon you encountered is shiny. A different color can be a clue, but it is not proof because regional forms may look different from their standard counterparts.
The reliable test: look above the CP
Tap the Pokémon to start the encounter, then inspect the area directly above its CP. If the shiny icon is displayed there, that encounter is a Shiny Pokémon. This is the confirmation method described by Niantic’s Pokémon GO Help Center in “What are Shiny Pokémon?”

The icon is more dependable than judging the model’s color. Use the encounter screen—not an impression from the map or a quick glance—as the point at which you make the decision.
- Tap the Pokémon on the map.
- Wait for the encounter screen to load.
- Look above the Pokémon’s CP for the shiny icon.
- If the icon is present, the Pokémon is shiny. If it is absent, do not label the encounter shiny based on color alone.
Why color alone can mislead you
Pokémon GO includes regional forms with their own colors, body shapes and poses. Those differences are part of the form, not necessarily a shiny transformation. Niantic uses Rattata as an example: Kanto Rattata is purple and four-legged, while Alolan Rattata is black and upright. Seeing one color instead of the other tells you which regional form you may be facing; it does not, by itself, establish that the Pokémon is shiny.

Regional forms can also have shiny variants. That means a regional Pokémon may be both a different form and shiny, or simply a different form in its ordinary coloration. The icon above CP resolves that ambiguity.

Rattata example
A purple, four-legged Kanto Rattata and a black, upright Alolan Rattata look noticeably different even when neither is shiny. Their appearance reflects regional form. If either form is shiny, the encounter still needs to show the shiny icon above CP for confirmation.
What if the species has no shiny variant available?
Not every Pokémon in Pokémon GO has an available shiny variant. A species can appear normally while offering no legitimate shiny encounter at that time. Niantic also notes that some species have shiny encounters restricted to particular events. Smeargle, Unown and Meltan are examples named in the Pokémon GO Help Center.

Therefore, two checks are separate:
- Encounter check: Is the shiny icon above CP?
- Availability check: Has Niantic enabled a shiny encounter for this species under the current game conditions?
If you are trying to determine whether a species can currently be shiny, consult Pokémon GO’s current official event announcements. Availability changes by species and event, so an old event announcement or a previous player report may no longer describe the present situation. Do not infer a full current shiny roster from a single encounter.
Ditto: the disguise rule that causes confusion
Ditto has a special disguise behavior. A shiny Ditto does not disguise itself as another shiny Pokémon, but it can disguise itself as a non-shiny Pokémon. Consequently, the apparent species you see before the reveal is not a reliable way to judge whether a potential Ditto is shiny.
Do not try to identify a disguised Ditto by deciding that its disguise “looks shiny.” Apply the game’s actual reveal and then use the shiny icon shown for the encountered Pokémon. The fact that a disguise looks ordinary does not rule out a shiny Ditto.

How the Shiny Pokédex records your collection
Pokémon GO tracks shiny forms separately in the Pokédex. Catching the standard form of a species does not register that species as obtained in the Shiny Pokédex. Until you obtain the shiny form, its shiny entry may appear as an outline.
To check your registration, open the Pokédex and switch to the Shiny category. An outline there means the shiny form has not yet been obtained, even if the ordinary form is already registered. Once you catch the shiny form, the separate shiny entry records that form.
Common situations and the correct response
“It is a different color, so it must be shiny.”
Not necessarily. Regional forms can have distinct colors and shapes without being shiny. Enter the encounter and check above CP for the icon.

“I know this species has a shiny form, but this encounter is not showing one.”
Knowing that a shiny variant exists in the game does not make every encounter shiny. The specific encounter must display the icon. If no icon appears, treat that encounter as non-shiny.
“Does every Pokémon have a shiny version?”
No. Niantic states that not all Pokémon have shiny variants available, and some shiny encounters are limited to specific events. Check current official event information for the species you want.

No. A shiny Ditto can use a non-shiny Pokémon as its disguise. The disguise’s appearance is not the confirmation signal.

“Why is the shiny entry only an outline in my Pokédex?”
The Shiny Pokédex records the shiny form separately from the standard form. If you have not caught that shiny form, the entry can remain an outline even when the regular species is registered.

- Treat unusual color or body shape as a possible regional-form clue, not proof of shininess.
- Remember that the species may not currently have an available shiny encounter.
- For Smeargle, Unown, Meltan and other event-linked species, verify the current official event announcement.
- After catching one, check the Pokédex’s Shiny category if you want to confirm that the separate shiny entry is registered.
What the icon does—and does not—tell you
The icon answers one narrow question: whether the Pokémon currently on your encounter screen is shiny. It does not tell you why the Pokémon looks different, whether its appearance comes from a regional form, or whether every member of that species can be shiny. Those are separate questions that require the form and event context.
For an immediate decision, prioritize the signals in this order: the shiny icon first, the species and regional form second, and color as a supporting visual detail only. This order prevents the most common mistake—confusing a regional form with a shiny variant.
