Installation by itself does not prove which format you own.
The quickest way to identify the edition
Use the evidence you actually have, in this order:
- Check what was sold. A package that includes a game disc is a physical (disc) edition. A listing that delivers a download code or a PlayStation Store entitlement is digital.
- Check the console requirement. A disc game needs a PS5 with a working, compatible disc drive. A digital game does not require a drive.
- Check how the game starts. Disc games are installed from the disc and the disc must stay inserted whenever you play. Digital games are downloaded from PlayStation Store and launched from the Games home after the download is ready.
- Check the exact edition wording. Look for “disc,” “physical,” “digital,” “download,” or “download code,” and read the included-contents section rather than relying on a product photograph.
PlayStation’s official guidance does not establish one universal icon or box mark used for every game’s edition. A title’s name, cover art, screenshot, or an icon copied by a retailer is therefore not enough evidence on its own.

What “disc” and “digital” mean on PS5
Disc edition
A disc edition delivers the game license through a physical game disc. You insert that disc into the console to install the game. After installation, the disc remains the proof of entitlement: PlayStation says it must be inserted whenever you play. If the disc is removed, the installed data can remain on the storage drive, but the console will not have the required disc license to start the game.
This format requires a PS5 configuration with a compatible optical drive. The disc is not merely an installation medium that can be discarded after setup. Anyone buying a used copy, borrowing a copy, or moving a disc between consoles should plan to keep the disc available for every play session.

Digital edition
A digital edition is downloaded from PlayStation Store. The game is associated with the account and purchase entitlement used to obtain it, rather than with a physical disc. The PS5 Quick Start Guide for the CFI-71XX model group states: “You can play a game that you downloaded from PlayStation Store.” Once the download is ready, the game appears on the Games home and can be launched without inserting media.
Digital ownership still requires the normal account, storage, download, and console conditions for that purchase. Do not treat a game already present on a console as automatically digital: a disc installation can look similar in the home screen and in storage menus.
How to verify a physical package
Read the edition and contents, not just the front image
For a boxed purchase, inspect the product description, edition name, and “what’s included” or contents panel. The useful evidence is an explicit statement that a PS5 game disc is included. Wording such as “physical edition,” “disc version,” or “includes PS5 disc” identifies a disc-based product. Wording such as “digital download,” “download code,” or “PlayStation Store code” identifies a digital delivery.

Retail photographs can be incomplete, reused for several editions, or show artwork without revealing the contents. If the written listing and image disagree, treat the listing’s contents and edition field as the question to resolve and ask the seller before paying. Do not infer the format from a general game title because the same title can be sold in both formats.
Check the platform line
A package can mention PS4, PS5, or both. Confirm that the item specifically includes the PS5 version you need. A PS4 disc is not the same thing as a PS5 disc, even when an upgrade is available. If the listing describes an upgrade rather than a native PS5 disc, read the upgrade conditions in the next section.
What to do when the description is vague
- Search the listing text for “disc,” “physical,” “digital,” “download,” and “code.”
- Open the seller’s included-contents or format selector; do not rely on a category label alone.
- Confirm whether the item is a complete disc, a code in a box, or an accessory bundle that does not contain the game.
- Ask for confirmation of the exact item and platform before ordering if no format is stated.
There is no official, universal visual standard in the consulted PlayStation pages that lets you classify every retailer’s package from an icon alone.

How to verify an online listing before buying
Online stores often place disc and digital products beside one another. Use a repeatable check rather than assuming the default option is physical.

- Identify the seller’s format field. Select or read the option labelled physical, disc, digital, or download.
- Read the delivery method. A shipped item normally indicates a disc, while an emailed or on-screen code indicates a digital entitlement. Treat this as supporting evidence and verify the contents wording.
- Check the console requirement. A disc purchase is unsuitable for a console that has no compatible drive unless you can add a drive approved for that exact model.
- Check the edition and region details shown by the seller. Make sure the stated PS5 version, bundle contents, and any upgrade language match what you intend to play.
- Save the confirmation. Keep the order description or receipt showing the format in case the delivered item differs from the listing.
Do not use a general game title, a screenshot of the console home screen, or an unsourced symbol as proof. Those details can be shared by multiple editions.
Why an installed game does not reveal its format
Both formats place game data on the PS5’s storage. A disc game installs data from the disc; a digital game downloads data from PlayStation Store. The resulting home-screen tile and storage entry can therefore look alike. Installation tells you that data is present, not which license authorizes it.
A practical test when you have the disc
- Remove the game disc and close the game.
- Try to start the game from the Games home.
- Insert the disc again if the console asks for it.
A disc-based entitlement is expected to require the disc for play, while a genuinely digital purchase does not. This test is useful only when you know which disc belongs to the installation; a borrowed or different-region copy may not represent the entitlement you are trying to identify.
Check purchase history for a digital entitlement
If the game was obtained through PlayStation Store, check the account’s game library or purchase history while signed in to the account that made the purchase. A store entitlement is stronger evidence of digital ownership than the mere presence of an installed tile. If another account bought the game, the account currently viewing the library may not show the purchase.

PS5 with a disc drive
A drive-equipped PS5 can read compatible PS5 game discs and is the configuration required for disc-based PS5 play. Buying a physical game for a console without a drive will not solve the license requirement; the disc must be readable by the console.

PS5 Digital Edition
PlayStation describes the PS5 Digital Edition as an all-digital console without a disc drive. A disc game cannot be installed or authenticated on that configuration because there is no drive to read the media. Choose a digital purchase instead, unless your particular console supports an approved add-on drive.
Optional drives on newer slim model groups
The current PlayStation console product information lists an optional drive for specified slim model groups, including CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 groups. This is not a blanket statement that every Digital Edition can accept a drive. Check the exact model identifier printed on your console and the current compatibility information before buying an optional drive. Do not assume that an accessory intended for one model group fits another.

PS4 discs and PS5 digital upgrades
An upgrade can make the format confusing. For an eligible PS4 game, PlayStation may provide a digital PS5 version. The upgraded PS5 software is digital, but that does not necessarily turn the underlying purchase into unrestricted digital ownership.
When the upgrade came from a PS4 disc
PlayStation’s upgrade guidance says that, for eligible disc-based upgrades, the original PS4 disc must remain inserted each time you play the digital PS5 version. The disc acts as the continuing license check even though the PS5 game files are digital. You therefore still need a PS5 with a compatible drive.
Why a Digital Edition console cannot use that route
PlayStation confirms that PS4 game discs cannot be used on a PS5 Digital Edition console. Without a drive, that console cannot read the disc needed to validate the upgrade. If your console is a Digital Edition, obtain a digital purchase that does not depend on a PS4 disc, or verify whether your exact slim model supports a compatible optional drive before relying on an upgrade.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
“It is installed, so it must be digital”
False. Disc games install to storage as part of normal use. Confirm the license by removing the disc and checking whether the game asks for it, or by checking the purchasing account’s library.

“The title is the same, so any listing is fine”
False. A single title can have physical, digital, PS4, PS5, deluxe, bundle, and upgrade listings. Read the exact edition and included contents.
“A download code in a box is a disc game”
Not necessarily. A boxed code is a digital entitlement delivered in physical packaging. The listing should say whether a disc or a code is included; if it does not, obtain clarification.
“A PS5 Digital Edition can use my PS4 disc after an upgrade”
It cannot. The PS4 disc must be read for the upgrade license, and PS4 discs are not usable on a PS5 Digital Edition.
“Every Digital Edition can take the optional drive”
Do not generalize the slim-model note. Confirm the console’s exact CFI model group and the current compatibility statement before purchasing an accessory.
“A retailer icon is an official standard”
The PlayStation pages consulted do not define a universal icon for every store. Treat icons as clues only; explicit format and contents wording is the reliable evidence.
A decision checklist before you pay
- Format: Does the listing explicitly say disc/physical or digital/download?
- Contents: Is there a game disc, a download code, or only an account-based entitlement?
- Platform: Is the item for PS5, PS4, or an eligible upgrade path?
- Console: Does your PS5 have a compatible drive, or is it an all-digital model?
- Play requirement: Will a disc need to remain inserted after installation?
- Model check: If considering an optional drive, have you verified the exact CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 slim model group?
- Evidence: Do the written edition and contents fields agree with the photographs and checkout selection?
If any answer is missing, pause the purchase and request clarification. A low price or familiar cover image is not evidence of the format.

What to do when the game will not launch
A disc game asks for the disc
Insert the original disc and leave it in the drive while playing. Confirm that it is the disc used for the installation and that the console can read it. If the product was sold as a disc edition, the continuing disc requirement is expected behavior, not proof that the installation failed.
A digital game is missing from the library
Sign in with the account that purchased or redeemed the game and check that account’s library. A game installed by another account can appear on the console without appearing in your own purchase history. The presence of files does not transfer the purchase entitlement.
A PS4 upgrade does not start on a Digital Edition
Recheck the upgrade route. If eligibility came from a PS4 disc, the PS4 disc is required and cannot be used on a PS5 Digital Edition. A digital-only purchase is needed unless the exact console supports a compatible optional drive.
The listing did not match the delivered item
Compare the order confirmation with the package or redemption instructions. Photograph the contents and contact the seller through the order record. State specifically whether you received a disc, a code, a PS4 product, or a PS5 product; those distinctions determine the remedy.
Disc or digital: which should you choose?

Neither label can be safely inferred from the game’s title or from an installed copy. Match the purchase format to the console’s hardware and to the license requirement stated in the listing.
