Jailbreaking a PS5 replaces Sony’s normal software controls with an exploit-based environment that can run unauthorized code. The trade-off is firmware: an exploit may work only on particular system-software versions, while newer games, patches, online services and security fixes may require a later version.
That means there is no universal answer to “Should I update?” Keeping vulnerable firmware may preserve jailbreak compatibility but limit newer content and official support. Updating may restore compatibility with new games and services while removing access to the exploit. Sony’s agreements prohibit bypassing security and unauthorized exploitation, and modified consoles can face update, warranty, repair and online-use consequences; however, the available documentation does not prove that every jailbroken console is automatically banned from PlayStation Network.

What a PS5 jailbreak changes
A jailbreak uses software vulnerabilities to bypass parts of the PS5’s signed-code, authentication and security model. In practical terms, it can provide a way to execute code Sony did not authorize, load custom payloads and alter how the console handles software. That is fundamentally different from changing an ordinary setting: the console is operating outside the use Sony documents and supports.

Jailbreak availability depends on the installed system-software version, the exploit chain, the console’s exact revision and whether the required payloads still work. A release that works today can become irrelevant after an update, and a console that has never been updated may lack features or game compatibility that newer firmware provides.

What the reported Relapse release supports
Tom’s Hardware reported on September 30, 2026, that a release called Relapse supported PS5 firmware 7.00 through 13.60. The report described browser and kernel exploits providing kernel read/write access and support for additional payloads, including etaHEN. Those are dated, secondary-source compatibility claims—not a Sony-confirmed guarantee, not proof that every PS5 revision behaves identically and not evidence that the range remains current after later releases.
Check the exact firmware installed on your console before treating any compatibility list as relevant. Do not assume that a digital and disc edition of the same game, different console revisions or a later system update will have the same requirements.
Why firmware creates the central trade-off
PS5 jailbreaks generally rely on a vulnerability that Sony can close in a later system-software release. Installing that later firmware can remove the conditions the exploit needs. Refusing an update preserves the possibility of using the vulnerable version, but it can also leave the console unable to install a game patch, launch a title that checks for newer firmware or use a service that has changed its requirements.

| Choice | What you may gain | What you may give up |
|---|---|---|
| Remain on the current vulnerable firmware | Potential access to a jailbreak compatible with that exact version and console revision | Newer games, patches, features, security fixes or services that require later firmware; official support may be limited |
| Install a newer official firmware | Better access to current games, updates, applications, online features and security fixes | The jailbreak may stop working, and a later compatible exploit may not exist or may not be available for your version |
Neither choice is universally correct. The decision depends on whether your priority is home experimentation on an already-supported version or normal access to current games, multiplayer and PlayStation services.
Can you play online after jailbreaking a PS5?
The available evidence does not establish a reliable, universal online outcome. It does not show that every modified console is automatically banned from PlayStation Network, but it also does not establish that online play remains safe or dependable after jailbreaking.
Sony’s US PS5 System Software Licence Agreement prohibits modifying system software, bypassing PS5 security or authentication, downgrading and exploiting system software outside authorized use. The agreement says that, if Sony Interactive Entertainment determines that a user violated it, SIE may take measures that include disabling access to software or disabling console use online or offline. That is a contractual reserved remedy, not a statement that a specific penalty is automatic in every case.
Online games and applications can impose additional rules. Sony’s Software Application EULA prohibits unauthorized game hacks or mods, including modifications intended to gain an unfair advantage online or in multiplayer. A jailbreak used to cheat, tamper with network software or defeat authentication creates a different and more serious risk than merely having an altered system, but the documents reviewed do not specify a universal ban process, duration or trigger for jailbreak alone.

- The console may be unable to install the current system software required by a service.
- An application or game may require an update that the modified system cannot install.
- Network authentication, account checks or anti-cheat systems may reject an altered environment.
- A system change can cause instability, crashes or corrupted data that interrupts online play.
- Sony may restrict software or console use if it determines that the licence terms were violated.
Treat online play as uncertain rather than as a feature a jailbreak preserves. Keep competitive or account-critical play on an unmodified, fully supported system if reliable access matters more than experimentation.
Will updating your PS5 remove the jailbreak?
It can. If the jailbreak depends on a vulnerability present only through a certain firmware range, installing a newer release can patch that vulnerability or change the system components the exploit uses. A later update can therefore make the existing jailbreak unavailable, even if the console was previously working.

Do not interpret that as proof that every update permanently destroys every possible future exploit. It means only that the installed release must match the exploit’s requirements. The reported Relapse range of 7.00–13.60, for example, was already below the 14.00 requirement cited for some content in the same reporting. Exploit status changes over time, so verify current, model- and version-specific information before updating.
Automatic updates are a practical risk
Any setting or workflow that installs official firmware automatically can remove a vulnerable version before you decide. If preserving a jailbreak is your priority, first document the exact installed firmware and understand what an update would change. If normal operation, security and current game access are your priority, Sony recommends prompt installation of official updates.
Sony’s support guidance states: “SIE strongly recommends always installing the latest update as soon as possible after the update is released.” Sony says updates can include security patches and measures that prevent unauthorized content or hardware/software use, and that updates can affect system functionality.
Can you play new games without updating?
Sometimes an older disc or base game will run, but a title, patch or digital download can require a later firmware version. A console that stays on an exploit-compatible release may therefore have to choose between retaining that environment and installing the content.
The Wolverine example
Tom’s Hardware’s September 30, 2026 report gave Marvel’s Wolverine as an illustration. It said the reported disc version required firmware 13.40, while update 1.001.005 required 13.60. Users reported that the equivalent digital-version update required 14.00. Because 14.00 was beyond the reported Relapse range, a user could face a direct conflict between that update and retaining the stated jailbreak compatibility.
These are dated reports, not Sony-confirmed compatibility guarantees. Requirements can differ by edition, update and distribution method, and an individual game can change after launch. Check the requirement attached to the exact disc, download or patch you intend to use.

Typical symptoms of a firmware mismatch
- A disc displays an update notice before the game or its patch can be installed.
- A digital title or application refuses to start until system software is updated.
- A game launches in its base state but a newer patch is unavailable.
- An online feature fails because the application or console is behind the service’s supported version.
Do not assume that a workaround is harmless. Bypassing a version check or modifying game software can violate software terms, create instability and introduce security risks.
Sony’s warranty, repair and update warnings
Sony’s UK support guidance warns that altered or modified consoles might not operate properly or be able to install official update data. It also says such actions can void the system warranty and affect warranty or repair services. Warranty rules can vary by region and by the facts of an individual repair, so keep the warning tied to the jurisdiction in which your console is covered.
Sony’s licence covers firmware, system software, patches, updates, upgrades and new versions. It also reserves the ability to disable software or console use online or offline when SIE determines that the agreement was violated. The agreement describes Sony’s contractual rights; it does not publish an enforcement outcome for every modified console.

How to use Sony’s official USB update or reinstall path
Sony documents a maintenance procedure for updating or reinstalling official system software from a USB drive. This is not a jailbreak method and should not be treated as a way to preserve exploit access. Reinstallation deletes the console’s data.
- Use a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
- Create a folder named
PS5at the drive’s root, then create anUPDATEfolder inside it. - Place Sony’s official update file, named
PS5UPDATE.PUP, in theUPDATEfolder. - Connect the drive to the PS5 and follow the system’s Safe Mode instructions for updating or reinstalling system software.
- For a reinstall, back up anything you need first: the procedure erases console data.
Use only Sony’s current instructions and official file for the relevant procedure. A failed or interrupted installation can leave the console unable to start normally, while a successful installation can move the system beyond the firmware range required by a jailbreak.
How to decide whether to update or stay on your firmware
Make the decision before accepting an update, using the exact console and software details rather than a generic jailbreak list.
- Record the installed version. Note the complete system-software number and console model or revision.
- Check exploit compatibility. Confirm that the release you are considering supports that exact version and hardware. Treat dated reports such as the 7.00–13.60 Relapse range as historical unless current evidence confirms them.
- List the content you need. Check the minimum firmware for each game, patch, application and online feature you plan to use.
- Rank online and account reliability. If multiplayer, trophies, cloud services or a primary account are essential, weigh the uncertainty of a modified environment heavily.
- Account for support risk. Consider warranty status, repair needs, security patches, update failures and the possibility that official support will be limited.
- Choose deliberately. Updating favors current compatibility and Sony-supported operation; staying put favors preserving a known exploit possibility. There is no guaranteed method to keep both.
| Question | If the answer is “yes” | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Do you need a game or patch that requires newer firmware? | New content is a priority | Updating may be necessary, even if it ends current jailbreak compatibility |
| Is your exact firmware confirmed compatible with a current exploit? | A supported exploit exists | Staying put preserves that possibility, provided you accept the other limitations |
| Is dependable PSN or multiplayer access essential? | Online reliability matters most | Use an official, up-to-date system rather than assuming a jailbreak will remain online |
| Is the console under warranty or likely to need repair? | Support coverage matters | Modification may jeopardize warranty or repair eligibility |
Common mistakes and safer responses
Updating first and checking later
Once the console installs a later firmware, the previous vulnerable state may be unavailable. Check the version, game requirements and exploit status before approving the update.
Assuming a disc guarantees offline access
A disc can still require a newer system version or patch. Verify the requirement for that edition; do not infer it from another release or from the base game alone.

The absence of a documented universal ban does not guarantee PSN access, account safety or compliance with Sony’s terms. Keep unauthorized modifications away from cheating and competitive multiplayer.
Using unofficial files for a repair
Sony’s USB process is for official maintenance. Follow the current official procedure, use the required FAT32 or exFAT format and back up data before reinstalling.
The practical bottom line
PS5 jailbreaking changes the console’s software trust model and makes firmware the deciding constraint. The dated Relapse report covered 7.00–13.60, while the reported Wolverine example included a 14.00 digital update requirement—illustrating how quickly new content can move beyond an exploit range. Updating improves access to current games, services, security fixes and official support, but can close the vulnerability. Staying on older firmware may preserve jailbreak compatibility, but sacrifices some content and carries Sony’s stated warranty, repair, update and enforcement risks.
Sony’s documents do not establish an automatic PSN ban for every jailbreak, nor do they promise reliable online play on a modified console. Choose based on your exact firmware, required games and tolerance for support and online uncertainty, and treat any compatibility claim as version- and date-specific.
