Treat minimum and recommended requirements as separate targets: meeting the minimum is not a promise of a particular frame rate, resolution, or graphics setting.
Why a turn-based RPG still needs a game-specific compatibility check
Turn-based describes how combat or other game actions proceed; it does not tell you how demanding the game’s graphics or hardware requirements are. One game may run on an older PC while another requires a newer graphics card, more memory, or an SSD. You cannot infer compatibility from the genre label.

Start with the requirements for the exact title, edition, and PC store version you plan to buy. Use the developer or publisher’s current requirements as the comparison point. Requirements for a different RPG—or even a different edition of the same game—are not a substitute.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The phrasing is a useful way to frame the question, not evidence that a particular computer will run it.

Build a simple comparison sheet first
Write down the game’s requirements in two columns, minimum and recommended, before looking at your hardware. Add a third column for what Windows reports. This prevents a familiar-sounding component name from causing you to skip an important category.
| Category | Game listing | Your Windows result |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system and bitness | Required Windows edition/version and 32-bit or 64-bit status | Edition, version, and system type |
| Processor | Minimum and recommended model or family | Exact processor name |
| Memory | Minimum and recommended RAM | Installed RAM |
| Graphics | GPU model and VRAM threshold | Exact active GPU and available VRAM |
| Graphics API | DirectX or another specified API | Version reported by the system |
| Storage | Required free space and any SSD requirement | Free space and drive type on the intended installation drive |
Mark each row separately as meeting minimum, meeting recommended, below minimum, or unclear. Do not turn several green checks into an overall pass if one core requirement is still below the published baseline.
Which PC specifications to compare
Open the game’s official requirements and compare each listed item with your computer. Do not stop after checking the processor or the amount of RAM: the graphics card, its video memory, required graphics API, operating system, and storage can each be decisive.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Operating system and 64-bit support
Check the required Windows version and whether the game requires a 64-bit operating system. A matching Windows version is not enough if the game also specifies 64-bit support. Windows’ device-information instructions show the Windows edition and version, as well as whether the system is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Record the version exactly rather than writing only “Windows 10” or “Windows 11.” A listing can require a particular edition or bitness, and an otherwise strong computer cannot compensate for an unsupported operating system. If the game page is ambiguous about an update or edition, keep the result unresolved until the publisher clarifies it.
Processor
Compare the processor model or family with the game’s listed minimum and recommended processors. Windows shows the processor in Settings > System > About. Copy the complete model name, including its generation or suffix, into your worksheet.
Do not use clock speed alone to decide whether a different processor is equivalent: clock speed is not a reliable performance score across unlike processor generations. If the game lists an Intel model and an AMD model, treat those as the publisher’s examples of the required class rather than assuming every processor with a similar gigahertz figure is interchangeable. A processor that is below the stated minimum leaves compatibility uncertain even if the graphics card and RAM are sufficient.
Recommended Free Tools
RAM
Compare installed RAM with both requirement tiers. Windows lists installed memory in Settings > System > About. Keep the game’s minimum and recommended RAM figures separate; meeting one does not mean you meet the other.
Installed RAM is the figure to compare with the listing, not a guess based on how many programs are currently open. If your amount is between the two tiers, record that accurately: it meets neither a higher recommended number nor a lower minimum number unless the figures actually say so. RAM is only one row in the check and cannot offset a GPU, operating-system, API, or storage shortfall.

Graphics card and video memory
Identify the exact graphics device—discrete or integrated—and compare its model and available video memory (VRAM) with the game’s stated GPU and VRAM requirements. A graphics-chip name by itself does not settle every compatibility question. The specific game may list both supported card models and a minimum amount of VRAM.
Compare model and VRAM independently. A card with a familiar name but less video memory than the listing does not clearly satisfy that requirement. Conversely, having enough VRAM does not prove that the GPU’s processing capability or feature support matches the publisher’s named models. Use the exact requirement language and mark any unmatched model as uncertain rather than converting it into a confident equivalence.
If your PC has more than one graphics device, check which one the game is expected to use. Do not assume the gaming-capable device is active just because it is installed. DxDiag and Windows display or device settings can help identify the graphics hardware; compare the exact model with the game’s official list.
Graphics API, such as DirectX
If the game specifies DirectX, check the installed version in the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (DxDiag) and compare it with the requirement. Microsoft explains that “If your PC doesn’t have the right version of DirectX installed (the product box should tell you which one you need), your game might not work properly.” See Microsoft’s instructions for checking the DirectX version.
An installed DirectX version does not by itself prove that the graphics hardware supports every feature the game needs. Treat the API version and the GPU model as separate checks. If a listing names another API or a specific feature, record that separately instead of assuming DirectX information answers it.
Free storage and drive type
Compare the game’s required storage with the free space on the drive where you will install it. Check for a separate SSD requirement: having enough capacity on a hard drive does not satisfy a requirement that specifies an SSD. Windows shows available capacity in Settings > System > Storage; check the intended installation drive and any other drives you might use.
Use the free-space figure, not the drive’s total advertised capacity. If you plan to install on a second drive, measure that drive specifically. A different drive with plenty of room does not solve a shortage on the installation drive. Keep the capacity and drive-type checks as two separate rows because a drive can meet one and fail the other.
How to check your PC in Windows
Record the results before comparing them with the game’s requirements. These built-in tools provide the key system details without requiring a separate diagnostic product.
- Check Windows, CPU, and RAM. Open Settings > System > About. Record the Windows edition and version, system type (32-bit or 64-bit), processor, and installed RAM.
- Check installation-drive space. Open Settings > System > Storage. Note the free space on the drive you intend to use, and whether that drive is an SSD if the game specifies one. Check additional drives only if they are possible installation locations.
- Check DirectX. Search Windows for dxdiag and open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. On the System tab, note the DirectX version. If you need a report for troubleshooting or comparison, select Save All Information….
- Identify the graphics device. Review the display information in DxDiag or Windows display/device settings. Record the exact GPU model and available VRAM, then compare both with the game’s requirements.
- Check which GPU the game will use if there is more than one. Verify the game’s selected graphics device rather than assuming the integrated or discrete GPU is active.
- Compare every recorded detail with the exact game listing. Mark whether each item meets the minimum and recommended tier; do not treat a partial match as an overall pass.
Microsoft documents Settings as a way to find device, Windows, and storage information and explains how to use DxDiag to check DirectX and save system information.

Read the requirements page carefully
Requirements pages often combine several kinds of information. Separate hard requirements from explanatory notes. A line naming Windows 10 64-bit is a platform requirement; a note saying minimum settings can run on low to medium settings is game-specific guidance. Do not silently carry that guidance into another title.
Check when the page was accessed and whether the game has received a major update. Verify the precise edition, PC store version, and current patch-era listing. Requirements can differ between platforms or editions, so a console specification, an older store page, or a community post is not a replacement for the current PC page.
When the listing supplies alternatives—such as one Intel processor or one AMD processor—record both alternatives. Your task is to compare your exact part with the publisher’s published baseline, not to create a universal ranking of all processors or graphics cards.
Example comparison: Baldur’s Gate 3 on Windows
Larian Studios’ official Baldur’s Gate 3 system requirements, accessed October 13, 2026, list these Windows PC requirements. This is an example of how to read one game’s published tiers, not a benchmark or a template for every turn-based RPG.
| Specification | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit | Not stated separately in the listed recommended specifications |
| Processor | Intel i5-4690 / AMD FX 8350 | Intel i7 8700K / AMD Ryzen 5 3600 |
| RAM | 8 GB | 16 GB |
| Graphics card and VRAM | Nvidia GTX 970 / AMD RX 480 with 4 GB+ VRAM | Nvidia RTX 2060 Super / AMD RX 5700 XT with 8 GB+ VRAM |
| Graphics API | DirectX 11 | DirectX 11 |
| Storage | 150 GB available on an SSD | 150 GB on an SSD |
| Settings guidance from Larian | Can run on low to medium settings | Can run on high or ultra settings |
For this example, a computer with 8 GB of RAM and a GTX 970-class card could match the listed minimum rows while still falling short of the recommended 16 GB and 8 GB-plus VRAM targets. That tells you which tier the published numbers describe; it does not supply a guaranteed frame rate or resolution. A computer with an adequate CPU but an older GPU, an incompatible API, or no SSD still has an unresolved or unsupported core requirement.
Larian’s settings guidance applies to Baldur’s Gate 3; it should not be generalized to another game. For another RPG, look for that game’s own notes about what its minimum and recommended tiers are intended to deliver.
How to interpret your comparison
One or more core specifications fall below minimum
Describe the result as uncertain or below the publisher’s published baseline, rather than assuming the game will launch. A shortfall in a required GPU, operating system, graphics API, or SSD can matter even if the PC exceeds another requirement such as RAM. The requirements are the publisher’s stated baseline, not a guarantee that every configuration above or below it behaves identically.
If the mismatch is caused by an unclear model equivalence, do not label it a pass merely because a checker site says so. Look for an authoritative game note or treat the outcome as unresolved. If the game page omits a detail you need, the responsible conclusion is that the available information does not establish compatibility.
Your PC meets minimum but not recommended
Your PC meets the published minimum tier, but it does not meet the recommended tier. The likely trade-off may be settings or performance; the requirements alone do not establish a particular frame rate, resolution, or visual quality on your machine. Use any settings guidance published for that specific game, and do not borrow guidance from another title.

Report the result precisely: “meets minimum, below recommended” is more useful than “will run.” It tells a buyer that the computer is at the publisher’s lower target while leaving real-world performance dependent on configuration, drivers, thermals, resolution, patches, and other conditions.
Your PC meets or exceeds recommended
You can say that your PC meets the game’s published recommended tier. That is not a guarantee of flawless performance: configuration, drivers, thermals, resolution, and patches can also affect the result.
Meeting recommended is a requirements comparison, not an independent test. Avoid promising a particular frame rate, ultra preset, resolution, or absence of stutter unless the game’s authoritative documentation explicitly makes that promise.
A requirement is missing or contradictory
Pause the purchase decision when a requirement is missing, outdated, or contradictory. Recheck the official support page, the exact edition and store version, and the current patch-era listing. Do not fill a blank with a requirement from another RPG. A missing requirement means you cannot complete that row confidently.

- Relying on the genre label. Turn-based combat does not establish low graphics demand.
- Checking only CPU and RAM. GPU, VRAM, operating system, API, free space, and SSD status can each decide the result.
- Using clock speed as a universal ranking. Different processor generations cannot be compared by gigahertz alone.
- Confusing total disk capacity with free space. Compare free space on the actual installation drive.
- Confusing an HDD with an SSD. Capacity does not satisfy a separate SSD requirement.
- Assuming the installed GPU is the active GPU. Verify which device the game will use on systems with integrated and discrete graphics.
- Treating DirectX version as the whole graphics check. API version and GPU feature support are separate questions.
- Mixing minimum and recommended tiers. A computer can meet one and miss the other; report both.
- Borrowing another game’s settings guidance. Only that game’s own documentation supports a claim about intended settings.
- Trusting a checker without verification. A checker is a convenience, not a substitute for the publisher’s requirements, and its current accuracy or privacy suitability may be unclear.
- Buying an upgrade too early. Identify the exact shortfall and confirm that a proposed component or drive is compatible with the existing computer before spending money.
Should you buy an upgrade or a new PC?
A compatibility check should come before a shopping list. There is no single GPU, processor, RAM kit, drive, or complete PC that fits every turn-based RPG or every existing computer. First identify the exact game, then identify the row that fails or remains unclear.
If storage is the only shortfall, verify both the required capacity and whether the game requires an SSD. If the GPU or VRAM is below the listing, confirm the exact replacement’s compatibility with the computer before considering it. A processor shortfall likewise requires checking the platform, not just choosing a part with a higher-sounding clock speed. If several core requirements are below minimum, a complete system decision may be more practical than an isolated component, but the requirements comparison still comes first.
Built-in Windows Settings and DxDiag provide the information needed for the initial check, so a paid diagnostic product is not necessary for this core task. Spend only after the game-specific shortfall and the proposed hardware fit are established.
What a requirements check can—and cannot—tell you
A careful comparison tells you whether your PC meets the game’s published minimum or recommended specifications and identifies any obvious shortfalls before purchase. It does not independently test your computer, predict an exact frame rate, or guarantee that a game will run without issues. If the publisher’s listing does not explain a requirement’s expected performance, do not assign it a resolution or frame-rate target.

The reliable pre-purchase decision is game-specific: use the current official requirements, record the relevant details in Windows, and judge each category against the tier you want to meet. If the comparison leaves a critical requirement unclear, treat compatibility as unresolved rather than substituting a genre-wide assumption or an unverified checker result.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a turn-based RPG run on my PC if my processor and RAM meet the minimum?
Not necessarily. Compare the operating system and 64-bit status, GPU and VRAM, required graphics API, free storage, and any SSD requirement as separate rows. A shortfall in one of those core categories can leave compatibility uncertain even when CPU and RAM meet minimum.
How do I check my processor, RAM, Windows version, and bitness?
Open Settings > System > About. Record the processor, installed RAM, Windows edition and version, and whether the system is 32-bit or 64-bit, then compare each item with the exact game listing.
How do I check DirectX on Windows?
Search Windows for dxdiag and open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. The System tab shows the DirectX version; Save All Information… creates a report you can keep for comparison or troubleshooting.
Does having DirectX 11 installed prove that the game will work?
No. The installed API version and the graphics hardware’s supported features are separate checks. Compare the exact GPU model and VRAM with the game’s requirements as well.
What if my PC has integrated and discrete graphics?
Identify both devices in DxDiag or Windows display/device settings and verify which one the game will use. Do not assume that the discrete or gaming-capable GPU is active simply because it is installed.
What is the difference between minimum and recommended requirements?
They are separate published targets. Minimum may describe the lowest supported baseline, while recommended is a higher target. For Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian says minimum can run on low to medium settings and recommended can run on high or ultra; do not apply that wording to another game.
Is enough free space on any drive sufficient?
No. Check the drive where the game will actually be installed. Compare its free capacity and drive type separately; an HDD with enough space does not satisfy a listing that requires an SSD.
Can a system-requirements checker make the decision for me?
Use one only as a convenience and verify its result against the developer’s or publisher’s current requirements. No particular checker should replace the primary listing when its current accuracy or privacy practices are unclear.
Should I buy a new GPU or PC before checking the game?
No. Identify the exact game and the specific requirement you miss first. Then confirm that any proposed component or drive is compatible with your existing computer; a generic upgrade recommendation cannot answer every game-specific shortfall.
The Bottom Line
Find the exact, current PC requirements; record your Windows CPU, RAM, OS bitness, GPU/VRAM, DirectX, and installation-drive details; and compare every row against minimum and recommended tiers. If a core requirement is below minimum or unclear, treat compatibility as unresolved rather than assuming a turn-based label guarantees playability.
