In Marathon, the useful run is the one you extract from with loot that helps your next build. Start on Perimeter (Beginner) if it is available, bring ammunition and healing, move with sound and environmental hazards in mind, and decide on an exit before your backpack is full. Exfiltration takes time and can draw enemies, so survival depends on route choice and timing as much as winning fights.

What a successful Marathon run is for

Marathon is an extraction shooter set on Tau Ceti IV. You scavenge during a run, then try to exfiltrate with useful loot. That haul can support stronger future builds, but the gear you bring is at risk when you deploy again. Bungie’s official game overview describes this loop: assemble a build, take it into a run, and risk it for more loot and progression.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That makes a beginner’s goal different from simply clearing every room or defeating every enemy. A short run that teaches you a route and ends with a safe extraction can be more valuable than a long run full of loot that you fail to bank. Treat each deployment as a decision loop: choose a purpose, learn the area while scavenging, reassess the risk, and leave with what you can secure.

Think in terms of risk, not just loot

Every additional stop can offer supplies or progression materials, but it also costs time and may expose you to environmental threats, UESC enemies, or other Runners. The more you carry, the more you stand to lose if you stay too long. There is no static route that guarantees a safe exit: exfils appear semi-randomly during a match, and conditions vary from run to run.

  • Cronos: The New Dawn is a brutal third-person survival horror where you fight for the future by salvaging the past. Burn monsters before they merge. Extract souls from the living. Adapt or die.
  • Set in a grim world where Eastern European brutalism meets retro-futurist technology, Cronos: The New Dawn lets you experience a gripping story that straddles the line between past and future.
  • The enemies you’ll encounter are nightmarish creatures, born from the remnants of humanity – defeating them will require you to make full use of your arsenal.
  • The creatures you kill won’t stay dead for long. Fallen enemies can be absorbed by others - through a grotesque process called Merging - to become faster, tougher, and far deadlier.
  • This physical edition of Cronos: The New Dawn comes with bonus in-game content and a set of collectible stickers.

Set a modest goal for early runs. For example, focus on learning the route between two landmarks, completing one contract, or finding a tracked barter material. If you achieve that goal and have a reasonable way to leave, extracting is a successful outcome—not a failure to explore everything.

Choose a zone that fits your learning goal

Bungie’s March 5, 2026 starter tips identify Perimeter (Beginner) as an option for learning and contrast it with regular Perimeter for players seeking more PvP. Use the live zone selector rather than assuming every option or rotation remains unchanged: Marathon is a live-service game, and its zones and onboarding can change.

Choice What the official guidance establishes How a beginner can use it
Perimeter (Beginner) Bungie’s March 5, 2026 tips describe it as a beginner option. They do not describe it as PvP-free. Choose it when available if your priority is learning the basic run loop with less PvP pressure than regular Perimeter.
Regular Perimeter Bungie’s March 5, 2026 tips present it as an option for players wanting more PvP. Consider it when you are ready for greater player-combat exposure, rather than treating it as the default training environment.
Other zones The official homepage describes zones with escalating difficulty; details vary and are subject to live updates. Read the current selector and any current official zone guidance before choosing. Do not infer a zone’s hazards or extraction rules from its name alone.

As of Bungie’s June 2, 2026 Season 2 announcement, Night Marsh is a pitch-black version of Dire Marsh with new threats. That makes it a distinct environment, not a map to approach as though its visibility and hazards are identical to a familiar zone. The announcement does not provide a complete beginner walkthrough of Night Marsh’s locks or mechanics, so use current zone-specific instructions for those details.

Bungie’s October 6, 2026 roadmap says regular Extraction remains available in each zone during the described three-week Sponsored Queue rotation. It also lists Marathon: Symbiosis as planned for December 8, 2026, including a first permanent PvE experience, an expanded Perimeter, and new onboarding. Those are dated plans and rotation details, not guarantees about what will be available at another time; check the live selector and current official announcements before you queue.

Prepare before deploying

A little preparation can prevent a run from ending because you ran out of ammunition or healing. Bungie advises bringing plenty of both because little may be found during a run. Check your loadout and consumables before deployment, and choose a simple objective so you know what you are looking for rather than filling your pack indiscriminately.

  1. Check the zone selector. If Perimeter (Beginner) is available and you want to learn fundamentals with less PvP pressure, select it. Do not assume it removes player encounters.
  2. Bring ammunition and healing. Review what you have equipped and packed before deploying. Do not plan on finding enough supplies in the field to replace what you left behind.
  3. Choose one practical objective. Pick a contract, a barter material you need, or a short route-learning goal. Some contracts are zone-specific; inspect the map-screen objectives for location clues.
  4. Track materials you need. Use the in-game tracking option for barter materials so relevant drops are marked. This makes scavenging more intentional and reduces time spent checking every item.
  5. Accept the gear risk. Decide what you are willing to put at stake before the run starts. Bungie’s overview frames later deployments as risking assembled gear, so do not treat an expensive loadout as protected just because you are playing cautiously.

Your planned objective should be small enough to leave time for an exit. If the contract or desired item takes you across the map, account for the return or reroute to an exfil; reaching the objective is not the same as banking its reward.

Learn the map without trying to memorize everything

There is no need to memorize every room in a zone during your first deployment. Learn a few recognizable landmarks and the paths connecting them. On a later run, add another area or route. That gradual approach helps you build a usable mental map—where you are, what nearby options exist, and how much travel may be left—without asking you to navigate the whole zone at once. Bungie’s reviewed official materials do not provide a static current map atlas, so use the live in-game map and what you observe in your own matches.

Use a short route-learning run

  1. Pick a starting point and a nearby landmark. Notice the terrain, buildings, or other visible features that help you recognize the area.
  2. Follow one route between landmarks. Pay attention to turns, exposed stretches, and places where enemies or hazards can interrupt travel.
  3. Check the map and objective clues. Contract objectives can be zone-specific, and the map screen offers location clues. Use those details to orient yourself rather than wandering at random.
  4. Identify an exit option as the run develops. Exfils are not fixed in place at match start, so do not assume your planned route ends at a particular known exit.
  5. Extract or stop when the learning goal is met. A map-learning run has value even if you carry little loot; getting out gives you time to use that knowledge on the next deployment.

After a run, remember one or two concrete observations: which landmark helped you orient, where you found supplies, or which route felt exposed. Carrying those lessons forward is more useful than trying to retain every corridor or encounter.

Control sound and notice the environment

Sound is information other players can use to find you. Bungie warns that nearly every action makes noise: movement, looting, opening doors, activating an exfil, using items, healing, swapping weapons, and firing. Gunfire is not the only giveaway, so think about when you perform routine actions, especially if you suspect another Runner may be nearby.

Crouching makes heat dissipate faster, according to Bungie’s starter tips. That is not a promise that crouching silences every action or makes you undetectable. Treat it as one movement consideration, not a substitute for choosing a sensible route or paying attention to nearby activity.

Give yourself time to do noisy actions

  • Loot deliberately. Opening containers and looting can reveal your location. Avoid lingering over low-value items when you should be moving toward an exit.
  • Choose when to heal or use items. Healing and item use make noise. If you have room to reposition first, avoid doing these actions in an exposed spot where someone can approach unseen.
  • Be deliberate with doors and weapon swaps. Both can produce sound. Consider whether the convenience of an immediate action is worth advertising your position.
  • Do not treat a quiet moment as proof of safety. Players may be responding to sounds you made earlier, while environmental and PvE threats remain present even when no one is firing.

Watch for threats on the ground as well as threats with weapons. Bungie specifically calls out tick nests, UESC claymores, and particularly deadly poison plants. A route that looks convenient can still be dangerous because of a hazard, so scan the environment instead of focusing only on your map or possible PvP encounters.

Manage ammunition, healing, and inventory

Supplies are part of your route planning. Bungie’s starter tips say Outskirts containers are more likely to contain ammunition or healing, and recommend looking for ammo crates. That is a probability, not a guarantee: do not make an essential plan that only works if a particular container supplies what you need.

Spend ammunition where it matters

  • Use the knife against low-level enemies when it is practical, saving firearm ammunition for situations where it matters more.
  • Check ammo crates and useful containers while travelling, rather than assuming you can replace every round spent.
  • Avoid turning every enemy encounter into a fight. Detours and noise can cost time and draw attention that jeopardizes your ability to extract.

Make consumable slots work for you

Depleted Patch Kits and Shield Charges do not extract, even for credits, according to Bungie’s guidance. Use depleted ones and make space for more valuable loot before you leave. This is an inventory decision, not a reason to postpone healing you need: preserving your life and reaching an exit matter more than carrying a used consumable.

Bungie also recommends smoke to break UESC aggro. Keep that advice narrow: the cited tip specifically concerns UESC, and does not establish that smoke will also break the attention of other enemy types or players.

Plan your extraction before you need it

An exfil is a timed commitment, not an instant escape. Bungie says exfils appear semi-randomly as a match progresses, take about a minute to warm up after activation, and that guarded exfils bring a UESC patrol. The minute is the stated warm-up time once activated; it does not include your travel to the site or time spent dealing with threats. Leave a margin for those factors rather than starting an exit attempt at the last moment.

  1. Reassess as you scavenge. Check your timer, current supplies, loot value, and likely travel distance. Decide whether one more stop is worth the added exposure.
  2. Locate a plausible exfil. Because exfils appear semi-randomly, do not assume a fixed exit will be available. Use the current match information and your knowledge of the area.
  3. Start moving while you still have time. Account for travel as well as the warm-up and any encounter at a guarded exfil. No static route can guarantee that you will arrive safely.
  4. Activate the exfil and manage your position. The activation takes about a minute to warm up. Bungie says you do not need to stand inside the exfil area until the circle appears, giving you room to watch approaches instead of remaining stationary there throughout the countdown.
  5. Respond to what happens, then leave. Guarded exfils summon a UESC patrol, and other Runners may also be a threat. There is no universal safe tactic for every approach or match state.

Waiting outside the area until the circle appears can give you room to watch approaches, but it does not make an exfil safe. Sound from activation may also give away your position. Keep an eye on the approach while allowing enough space and time to respond, and avoid treating the countdown as downtime.

Make each deployment support the next one

Loot is not the only form of progress. Inspect faction upgrade trees and choose a progression path that supports the kind of run you want to make. A useful upgrade can give future deployments a clearer purpose than collecting whatever happens to fit in your backpack.

Contracts and barter materials can also guide your route. Check the map-screen objectives for location clues, remember that some contracts are zone-specific, and track needed barter items so the game marks relevant drops. These tools help you prioritize without requiring you to explore every building. If a target pulls you away from a viable exit or toward a threat you are not prepared to handle, reassess rather than pursuing it automatically.

What changes between zones—and what not to assume

Marathon’s official homepage describes zones of escalating difficulty, but the beginner guidance does not establish a full, stable set of comparative statistics for every zone. Difficulty, PvP exposure, visibility, hazards, loot objectives, and extraction demands may differ. Verify details in the live selector and current official zone information instead of assuming one zone works like another.

For example, Night Marsh is described in Bungie’s June 2, 2026 Season 2 announcement as a pitch-black Dire Marsh with new threats. The announcement establishes its broad character, but not a full current walkthrough of its distinctive locks or mechanics. Likewise, Bungie identifies Cryo Archive as an endgame, raid-like activity, not a routine first-map practice area. Consult current zone-specific official guidance before attempting activities whose mechanics are not covered by the general beginner tips.

Live-service details have dates. Bungie’s October 6, 2026 roadmap describes a three-week Sponsored Queue rotation while saying regular Extraction remains available in each zone; it also plans Marathon: Symbiosis for December 8, 2026, with a permanent PvE experience, expanded Perimeter, and new onboarding. Check the current announcements if your question is whether a queue, feature, or zone is available now, rather than relying on a dated roadmap as a live status page.

A practical first-run checklist

  • Choose Perimeter (Beginner) if it is currently offered and you want less PvP pressure while learning; do not assume it is free of player encounters.
  • Bring ammunition and healing, and decide on a small contract, barter, or route-learning objective.
  • Track any barter material you need, and use the map screen for contract location clues.
  • Remember that doors, looting, healing, items, weapon swaps, exfil activation, movement, and gunfire can make noise.
  • Watch for tick nests, UESC claymores, and poison plants; use the knife against low-level enemies when practical and reserve ammunition.
  • Check your timer and plan a plausible exit before your pack is full. Budget for travel, roughly one minute of exfil warm-up after activation, and possible threats.
  • Use depleted Patch Kits and Shield Charges rather than carrying them out; they do not extract.
  • Leave when the risk of another stop outweighs its value. A modest haul safely banked can support the next run.
