Streaks, repeated doubles and clusters of hits can occur in genuinely random play. The useful test is documentary: find a current, independently checkable review of the random-number generator, confirm exactly what that review covered, check its validity date, and look for match records or a verifier that lets you reproduce the published rolls.
Operator assurances and player-facing histograms are useful starting points, but neither is conclusive alone. Treat fairness as a chain of evidence rather than a feeling about one session.

What “fair dice” means online
Physical dice have mechanical sources of randomness. An online game instead produces two values through software and then maps those values to the dice faces shown in the interface. A fair implementation needs several properties that are often confused with one another.

A cryptographically secure random-number generator is designed to make future outputs impractical to predict, even when someone has observed earlier outputs. That property matters because a predictable generator could allow a server operator, attacker or informed player to anticipate upcoming rolls.

Uniform distribution
Uniformity means each die face has the same long-run probability. For two dice, every ordered pair from 1-1 through 6-6 should have the appropriate equal likelihood under the game’s implementation. Uniformity is about the distribution of outcomes, not whether a short session looks balanced.
Independence
Independence means one roll does not alter the probability of the next roll. A fair sequence can therefore contain several doubles, the same number repeatedly, or a run that appears to favor one player. A generator can be unpredictable without being uniformly distributed, and it can be uniform in aggregate while still having dependencies. A serious review should address all relevant properties.
Why a streak is not evidence of cheating
Random sequences naturally form clusters. Backgammon.com summarizes this point as “Certified randomness still produces streaks.” Seeing repeated doubles or several hits in succession is emotionally powerful, but it does not identify a faulty generator or show that an outcome was selected for a particular player.
Your personal session is also a small, selected sample: you remember the rolls that changed the game and forget uneventful sequences. A short run cannot establish a distribution, independence or the timing of outcome assignment. Even a long run requires a defined method, complete records and an analysis that another person can reproduce.
The right question is not “Did I just see an unlikely sequence?” It is “What independent evidence shows how this system generates and assigns rolls, and can I verify that evidence?”
Evidence ranked from weakest to strongest

Use the highest level available, but read the scope and limitations rather than treating a label such as “certified” as a universal guarantee.

Step 1: Record the platform’s own claims
Begin with the game’s help or fairness page. Write down the generator description, the claimed inputs, the date the page was updated and any link to a report or certificate. Keep the wording attributed to the operator.

Backgammon.com says its rolls are generated on its servers with a cryptographically secure random-number generator. It also says the generator receives no match score, board position or player identity. Those statements describe the operator’s design claim. They become independently supported only to the extent that an identified review covers the relevant implementation.
Backgammon Galaxy’s description
The Backgammon Galaxy help page says it uses a cryptographically secure RNG and provides dice statistics in a player profile. The page shows a modification date of May 20, 2025. Statistics improve transparency, but the page itself remains an operator statement unless an external report verifies the underlying system.
Step 2: Identify who reviewed the system
A meaningful third-party document should name the reviewer, the system or game covered, the examination date, the properties tested and a validity period. Distinguish an independent laboratory test from a federation’s due-diligence review, and distinguish either from a source-code statement written by the operator.
Laboratory testing reported by Backgammon.com
Backgammon.com reports that Gaming Laboratories International (GLI) evaluated the RNG producing every roll in July 2026. The platform describes the review as covering unpredictability, uniform distribution and statistical test batteries, and says the certificate is hosted on GLI’s own servers. Before relying on that summary, open the certificate on the certifier’s site and check the exact system name, covered version, issue date and validity period. A platform’s description cannot expand the certificate’s scope.
World Backgammon Federation certificates
The World Backgammon Federation (WBGF) issued a certificate for Backgammon Plus dated April 17, 2025. It says the federation conducted due diligence on the game’s code and found the random-dice algorithm suitably strong, with validity through April 30, 2026. On October 16, 2026, that stated validity period has ended. It is historical evidence about the reviewed code, not a current certification.

A separate WBGF certificate for Lord of the Board is dated March 9, 2026 and states validity through May 31, 2028. That document applies to the named game and covered code. It is not a general endorsement of every title from the same publisher or of future versions.
Step 3: Check the certificate’s scope and date
Read the document itself, not only a badge or marketing paragraph. Use this checklist:
- Reviewer: Is the organization identified, and is the certificate readable on its own website or document system?
- Subject: Does it name the exact game, RNG, application version or server system you are evaluating?
- Properties: Does it address unpredictability, uniformity, independence or statistical testing, rather than merely describing a code inspection?
- Issue date: When was the examination performed?
- Validity: Is there an explicit expiration date, and has it passed?
- Changes: Does the document say what happens after a code, server or randomness-provider change?
- Access: Can an interested player inspect the original report instead of accepting an operator-made screenshot?
An old certificate can still document a past review. It cannot establish that the current production system is unchanged or that the certificate remains valid.

A histogram of doubles, individual faces or player totals can reveal an imbalance worth investigating, especially when it covers many complete matches. It is descriptive evidence, not a complete fairness test.
Questions to ask about a histogram
- How many rolls are included, and are unfinished games excluded?
- Are all rolls shown, or only rolls from a selected period or account?
- Are the two dice recorded separately as well as in combinations?
- Can you download the underlying match records, rather than seeing only a chart?
- Does the platform explain how it assigns a roll to a player and at what event the outcome is fixed?
- Can another person repeat the calculation from the same records?
A large discrepancy may justify preserving records and asking for an explanation. It still does not show that the server chose outcomes at advantageous moments. The sample size, collection method and missing-data rules determine what the numbers can support.
Why timing matters
Knowing that a game eventually displayed a sequence is different from knowing when the server committed each result. A platform could publish an ordinary-looking histogram while leaving unanswered whether outcomes were generated before a move, after a move, or conditionally. A fairness claim should explain that process or provide a verifiable commitment.

Step 5: Look for reproducible match records
The most useful player-facing transparency is an exportable match report containing the rolls and enough information to verify them independently. If a platform publishes a seed, commitment or verifier, follow its documented procedure on a copy of the match file.

Seed-based verification
A verifier may reconstruct a sequence from a manual seed or another published secret. AI Factory describes a product-specific method that replays a game from a manual seed and checks whether the same roll sequence recurs. That method is evidence about AI Factory’s own software; it should not be assumed to work on another platform.
HMAC-based example
An open-source “Provably-Fair Backgammon Verifier” project demonstrates a client-side construction using an HMAC-SHA256 seed process and a match report. This shows how a reproducible design can work: the verifier derives the same outputs from the same committed inputs without trusting a visual dice animation. It does not prove that an unrelated game uses that construction, that its server code matches the public verifier, or that the deployed server has not been modified.
What a verifier should let you do
- Obtain the complete match record, including the documented seed or commitment.
- Obtain the verifier source or a clearly specified algorithm.
- Run the verifier independently and compare every generated roll with the record.
- Confirm that the commitment was made before the relevant play and that the secret was revealed afterward.
- Check that the game’s production implementation is demonstrably the same implementation being verified.
If any of those links is missing, reproducibility is partial rather than conclusive.
How to investigate a suspicious session
- Save the evidence immediately. Export the match record, screenshots, timestamps and game identifier before records rotate or become inaccessible.
- Separate observation from interpretation. Record the exact rolls and positions; do not label them “rigged” in the data file.
- Expand the sample. Include complete matches over a defined period, not only games that felt unusual.
- Compare like with like. Keep separate totals for each die, doubles, combined outcomes and player assignment.
- Read the platform’s method. Note whether it documents the RNG, input isolation, roll timing and record retention.
- Check external evidence. Verify the reviewer, certificate scope and current validity date.
- Ask precise support questions. Request the covered RNG version, the event at which rolls are committed, the retention period for raw logs and the location of the original certificate.
- Escalate only what the evidence supports. A reproducible mismatch or a certificate that does not cover the live system is a specific technical issue; a frustrating streak is not proof of manipulation.
Common mistakes that produce false conclusions
Counting only memorable games
Selective recall creates a biased sample. Include ordinary games and preserve the selection rule so another analyst can audit it.

Expecting short-term balance
Uniform random output does not require each player to receive the same number of doubles in every match or session.

Treating “cryptographically secure” as a complete answer
That phrase addresses unpredictability. It does not, by itself, document uniformity, independence, assignment timing or the integrity of the application that consumes the random bytes.
Assuming a publisher-wide guarantee
A certificate for one title and version does not automatically cover another title, a different server or a later update.
Confusing an expired certificate with a failed algorithm
Expiration means the stated validity period has ended. It does not prove the generator became biased on that date, but it does mean you need current evidence before calling the certification current.
Assuming public code equals deployed code
A public verifier is useful only when the operator demonstrates that the production service uses the same algorithm and release, with appropriate controls around updates.
What a credible fairness page should publish
When comparing games, look for a page or document that answers these questions directly:
- Which RNG implementation generates each roll?
- Does the generator receive match score, position, player identity or other game-state inputs?
- Who tested it, and was the review independent?
- Were the RNG algorithm, output distribution and statistical behavior all examined?
- What exact game, version and server environment were covered?
- When was the review performed, and when does it expire?
- Where is the original certificate or report hosted?
- Can players export complete records and independently reproduce the sequence?
- What limitations does the operator acknowledge?
The more of these questions a platform answers with primary documents and reproducible data, the less you must rely on trust alone.
What the available examples do and do not show
The published examples illustrate different evidence levels rather than a ranked survey of online backgammon. Backgammon.com reports a 2026 GLI evaluation and describes the tested properties, but the certificate’s exact scope and validity must be checked directly. Backgammon Plus has a WBGF code-review certificate whose stated validity ended April 30, 2026. Lord of the Board has a WBGF certificate dated March 9, 2026 with validity stated through May 31, 2028. Backgammon Galaxy publishes a fairness explanation and profile statistics. AI Factory documents a replay method for its own software, while the open-source verifier project demonstrates one possible HMAC-SHA256 design.
None of those examples establishes a universal percentage of biased online dice. The cited material does not provide a general prevalence study, and certification of one game cannot be generalized to the whole market.
Bottom line for players
Judge an online backgammon game by the quality and currency of its evidence, not by whether one session felt lucky or hostile. Start with the operator’s technical description, then verify an independent report, its scope and expiration date. Prefer complete match logs and a reproducible verifier when available. Use statistics to identify questions, not to declare guilt. If a platform cannot show who reviewed its RNG, what was tested, whether the review is current and how players can inspect records, its fairness claim remains an assertion rather than independently checkable proof.
