The dependable way to identify a PlayStation is to read the model number on the console or its original box. Seller labels such as “PS5,” “Slim,” “Pro” or “Digital” are useful starting points, but they do not replace the full code. PS5 model numbers start with CFI; PS4 model numbers start with CUH. Match that code to Sony’s model family, then verify the disc drive, storage, region, bundle and condition separately.
This guide shows where to find each label, how to interpret the major PS5 and PS4 groups, and how to check whether a separate disc drive will fit a digital PS5.

Start with the model number, not the shape
Console shells can look similar across revisions, and marketplace listings often reuse stock photos. The model number is the strongest identification clue because it is printed on the hardware itself. Ask for a sharp photograph of the label on the exact unit, not only a picture of the retail box or a product image supplied by a seller.
Sony describes the PS5 code this way: “The model number consists of the letters CFI, followed by a series of numbers and a letter.” You can read the label-location instructions on Sony’s PS5 support page. For PS4, Sony says: “The model number consists of the letters CUH, followed by four numbers and a letter,” with label positions varying by family; see Sony’s PS4 support page.
#1 Best Overall
- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
The letters and family digits identify the hardware group. The trailing letter and additional regional characters can identify a market or revision, so do not treat a shortened code as a complete SKU.
Quick reference: the major model groups
| Console | Model group | Sony’s identification | Where to look |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 | CFI-1000 series | Earlier PS5 group; check the complete suffix and configuration | Label on the bottom when the console is standing vertically |
| PS5 | CFI-2000 | PS5 slim model group | Bottom label; remove the base if it blocks the view |
| PS5 | CFI-2100 | PS5 slim model listed by Sony Direct in the United States | Bottom label; verify the exact regional code |
| PS5 | CFI-7000 | PS5 Pro model group | Bottom label; compare the full number |
| PS4 | CUH-10xx, CUH-11xx, CUH-12xx | Original PS4 family groups | Lower rear of the chassis |
| PS4 | CUH-20xx | PS4 family commonly sold as Slim | Spine to the right of the power port |
| PS4 | CUH-70xx | PS4 Pro family | Spine above the system ports |
The family is an identification shortcut, not a complete promise about storage, color, region, warranty or included accessories. Those details must be checked against the listing and the physical package.
How to identify a PS5
1. Find the CFI label
- Place the PS5 vertically as shown in Sony’s support instructions.
- Look at the underside of the console for the label beginning with CFI.
- Remove the vertical base temporarily if it hides the label.
- Record every digit and the final letter. Do not rely on a partial image such as “CFI-20xx.”
If you are buying remotely, request a photograph that shows the entire CFI line and enough of the surrounding console to establish that the label belongs to the advertised unit. A photograph of a generic white console does not establish its model.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match2. Do not confuse the serial number with the model number
The serial number is a different identifier. If the console can be powered on, Sony displays it at Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. That screen is useful when contacting support, but it does not replace a photograph of the physical model label for a purchase check. Ask sellers not to publish a complete serial number in a public listing; the CFI model number is the relevant clue for comparing hardware.
3. Interpret the PS5 family digits
Sony’s setup guidance identifies CFI-2000 as the slim PS5 model group and CFI-7000 as the PS5 Pro model group. Sony’s United States Direct catalog currently lists a standard slim console using CFI-2100. Because Sony’s manuals and product pages cover multiple revisions and regions, the first four digits are a family indicator rather than a universal regional SKU decoder. Compare the complete code with the official page for the market where the unit was sold.
The CFI-1000 group is the earlier PS5 family. Do not infer a drive-upgrade option merely from the word “Digital” or from the console’s silhouette; check the exact model group and Sony’s compatibility statement.
4. Check whether a disc drive is installed
Inspect the side panel and the seller’s photographs. A disc-capable console should show its optical-drive hardware; a digital configuration may have a smooth side panel instead. The listing should state whether the drive is built in, absent, or supplied separately. “PS5” by itself does not answer that question.
Also verify what is physically included. A console advertised with a drive may be photographed without the drive, while a digital listing may show a drive in a promotional image that is not in the box. Require the seller to identify the exact contents of the package.
5. Treat the suffix as a verification detail
Two consoles can share the same family digits while carrying different final letters or market characters. Those characters are why a complete label photograph matters. They can correspond to a regional retail version or a later revision, while the family digits provide the broad category. Sony’s manuals and support pages list multiple regions and revisions, so there is no safe universal rule that translates every suffix into storage, color or a particular bundle.
When a listing gives only “CFI-2000,” ask for the remaining characters before paying. If the seller cannot show the label, compare the return policy and treat the claimed revision as unverified rather than filling in the missing information yourself.
Can you add a disc drive to a PS5 Digital Edition?
Sometimes, but “Digital Edition” is not enough information. Sony specifies the CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive for PS5 Pro and for PS5 Digital Edition consoles in the slim CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 groups. Initial pairing requires an internet connection. Sony’s compatibility and product information are listed on the official CFI-ZDD1 product page.
Use this decision process before buying the accessory:
- Read the console’s complete CFI number from the underside label.
- Confirm that it belongs to CFI-2000, CFI-2100 or the CFI-7000 Pro group identified by Sony for the drive.
- Confirm that the console is the digital configuration for which the accessory is intended, rather than assuming every digital PS5 is compatible.
- Budget for an internet connection during the first pairing procedure.
- Ask whether the drive, its cover components and any required parts are included if you are buying a used console.
Do not generalize this compatibility to the original CFI-1000 Digital Edition. The official compatibility statement names the later slim groups and Pro, so an original digital unit needs separate confirmation before you spend money on an add-on.

Compatibility also does not tell you what the seller is including. A used slim Digital Edition may have had its detachable covers removed, misplaced or replaced. Confirm that the drive bay covers, the drive itself and the correct console are all present. If an accessory is listed separately, add its price and any replacement covers to your budget instead of assuming the advertised console price represents a disc-capable setup.
How to identify a PS4
Read the CUH code
PS4 model numbers begin with CUH, followed by four numbers and a letter. Sony groups them as CUH-10xx, CUH-11xx, CUH-12xx, CUH-20xx and CUH-70xx. The “xx” notation represents market-specific characters; record the actual characters on the unit rather than replacing them with x’s in your buying notes.
Use the label location for the family
| CUH family | Label location | What it helps establish |
|---|---|---|
| CUH-10xx, CUH-11xx, CUH-12xx | Lower rear of the chassis | One of the original PS4 family groups |
| CUH-20xx | Spine to the right of the power port | The family commonly sold as PS4 Slim |
| CUH-70xx | Spine above the system ports | PS4 Pro family |
These groups distinguish the broad hardware family, but they do not verify a seller’s claimed storage capacity, color, region, accessories, operating condition or warranty. Compare the complete CUH number on the console or box with the listing’s description.
Why PS4 appearance is especially unreliable
Original PS4, Slim and Pro consoles all appear in used listings with replacement shells, dust, stickers and missing feet. A black three-tier profile can suggest Pro, but only the CUH-70xx label establishes that family. Likewise, a thinner-looking console can suggest Slim without proving it is CUH-20xx. If the label is hidden by an angle or a stand, request another photograph rather than identifying the system from the shell.
How to compare two listings that both say “PS5” or “PS4”
Put competing offers on the same checklist. A lower price may reflect a digital configuration, missing accessories, a different region, a worn console or an incomplete bundle rather than a better deal.
| Check | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Exact model | Full CFI or CUH code, including the final letter and regional characters | Separates revisions and avoids relying on seller shorthand |
| Family | PS5 slim, PS5 Pro, earlier PS5 group, original PS4 groups, PS4 Slim family or PS4 Pro | Sets expectations for physical design and supported accessories |
| Disc configuration | Drive installed, no drive, or a separately supported drive | Determines whether physical game and movie discs can be used immediately |
| Storage | Capacity stated for that exact console and region | Storage can differ between bundles and revisions |
| Package contents | Controller, power cable, HDMI cable, stand or base, drive, covers and game codes | Missing parts change the real cost and setup requirements |
| Region | Country or market of the unit and the seller’s warranty coverage | Suffixes, bundles and support terms can vary by market |
| Condition | New, open-box, refurbished or used; photographs of the actual unit | Official specifications cannot authenticate a marketplace item’s condition |
Sony’s official specifications establish model families and accessory compatibility; they do not verify that a marketplace seller owns the pictured unit, that a used console works, or that a claimed warranty and bundle are genuine. Those claims require direct seller evidence.

A short, specific message often reveals more than a long product description. Ask: “Please photograph the complete CFI or CUH label on the console being sold.” Then ask whether the optical drive is installed, whether the controller and cables are included, what storage capacity is printed or stated for that unit, and whether the photograph shows the exact item rather than a stock image.
For a digital PS5, ask which CFI group it belongs to and whether a CFI-ZDD1 drive is included, separately available or not compatible. For a used system, request a powered-on photograph or brief demonstration while asking the seller to obscure the complete serial number. If the answers conflict with the label, pause the purchase until the discrepancy is resolved.
A practical buying workflow
Step 1: Request the right photographs
- For a PS5, request the underside label showing the complete CFI code.
- For a PS4, request the label on the relevant rear or spine location.
- Request a separate photograph of the disc-drive side and ports.
- Ask for a photograph of the controller, cables and any advertised stand or drive.
- For a used console, ask for a powered-on screen or a short demonstration that does not expose the full serial number.
Step 2: Match the code to Sony’s documentation
Use Sony’s PS5 setup guidance for the CFI-2000 slim and CFI-7000 Pro distinctions, and the PS4 model-number guide for CUH families. For a current United States listing, Sony’s PS5 catalog and the 1 TB console page show the product configuration Sony is selling in that market. Do not use a United States suffix as proof that every country uses the same retail code.
Step 3: Reconcile the description with the hardware
If the text says “Slim” but the label is not in the CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 group, pause and ask for clarification. If it says “Pro” but does not show a CFI-7000-family label, treat the claim as unverified. If it says “Digital with disc drive,” determine whether the drive is the supported CFI-ZDD1 accessory and whether it is actually included.

Step 4: Confirm the final price includes the missing pieces
A digital console may need a separately purchased drive if you want physical media. A used unit without a stand, controller or cables may require replacements. Keep the seller’s stated storage and bundle in your notes, but do not convert an unspecified capacity or accessory into an assumption.
Step 5: Check the return path before paying
Model identification and seller protection are separate decisions. Save the listing photographs, the written description and the seller’s answers. If the delivered label, drive configuration or package contents differ, those records help you use the marketplace’s return process. Sony’s product page cannot substitute for a seller’s return policy, warranty terms or proof that a used console is working.

Relying on the shell design
Visual comparisons are secondary clues. Cases can be photographed at an angle, modified, or shown with removable panels that hide the relevant difference. Resolve uncertainty with the printed model label.

Reading only “CFI-20” or “CUH-70”
Those fragments suggest a family, but the complete suffix is needed for regional and revision checks. Ask for a closer photograph rather than guessing the missing characters.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConfusing a serial-number photograph with model proof
A serial number may help Sony support identify a unit, but it does not tell a buyer enough about the family or accessory fit. Request the CFI or CUH model line specifically.
Assuming every digital PS5 accepts the same drive
The CFI-ZDD1 compatibility statement is limited to PS5 Pro and slim CFI-2000/CFI-2100 digital groups. An original CFI-1000 Digital Edition is not covered by that statement, so obtain model-specific confirmation before ordering.
Treating an official product page as a marketplace inspection
Official pages describe Sony’s products. They cannot confirm whether a third-party listing is complete, authentic, undamaged or still under warranty. The actual console label and current photographs remain essential.
Assuming a bundle is universal
A product name may be reused across countries while the included controller, game code, storage description or warranty differs. Confirm the selling market and the contents of that exact box. A regional suffix is a clue to investigate, not a guarantee of every item inside.

What the model number can—and cannot—tell you
- It can identify: the broad console family and, when matched to Sony’s documentation, whether the unit is in a slim or Pro model group.
- It can help establish: whether a specified PS5 digital group is eligible for the CFI-ZDD1 drive.
- It cannot establish by itself: storage capacity, working condition, included accessories, a seller’s warranty, the authenticity of a photograph or the contents of a regional bundle.
For additional official accessory information, Sony maintains a PlayStation accessories directory. Always use the page for your market and the full model code printed on the console.
Final pre-purchase checklist
- Write down the complete CFI or CUH model number.
- Match the family to Sony’s support or product documentation for the relevant country.
- Confirm whether a disc drive is built in, absent or separately supported.
- For a digital PS5, check CFI-2000, CFI-2100 or CFI-7000 compatibility before considering CFI-ZDD1.
- Verify stated storage, controller, cables, stand, drive, games and other bundle contents.
- Confirm that photographs show the exact console being sold.
- Check condition, return terms and warranty separately from the model identification.
- Do not publish or request a seller’s complete serial number when the model number is sufficient.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the PS5 model number?
With the console positioned vertically, look at the bottom label for the CFI code. Remove the base temporarily if it blocks the label, and record the complete number and final letter.
How do I tell whether a PS5 is Slim or Pro?
Read the CFI label. Sony identifies CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 as slim groups and CFI-7000 as the PS5 Pro group. Verify the complete regional code rather than relying on the case shape.
Can every PS5 Digital Edition use the CFI-ZDD1 disc drive?
No. Sony specifies the drive for PS5 Pro and slim CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 Digital Edition groups. Initial pairing requires an internet connection; the original CFI-1000 Digital Edition is not covered by that compatibility statement.

CUH-10xx, CUH-11xx and CUH-12xx labels are on the lower rear. CUH-20xx is on the spine to the right of the power port, while CUH-70xx is on the spine above the system ports.
Does a model number prove a used console is working?
No. It identifies the hardware family, but you must separately verify condition, photographs of the actual unit, accessories, storage, warranty and return terms.
Should I share a console’s serial number with a seller or publicly?
The full serial number is unnecessary for comparing models. Share or request the CFI or CUH model line instead, and ask for a powered-on demonstration that does not expose the complete serial number.
The Bottom Line
Read the complete CFI or CUH label first. Then confirm the family, disc configuration, storage, region, bundle and condition from the exact console and listing. For a digital PS5, check the full model group before buying Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 drive; “Digital Edition” alone is not a compatibility guarantee.
