To “open” a Riven Mod in Warframe means to unveil it. Equip a newly acquired Riven marked “???“ on the appropriate weapon, read the challenge that appears, and complete that condition in a mission. The challenge completion unveils the Mod and reveals its randomized statistics. If you own a Veiled Riven Cipher, you can consume it to complete one Veiled Riven Challenge instantly.
What “opening” a Riven Mod means
Warframe’s official terminology is unveiling, not opening. A newly acquired Riven does not initially show its weapon-specific challenge or final bonuses. After you equip it, the game changes the indistinct Mod into a Veiled Riven and displays the condition you must satisfy. Completing that condition changes the Mod to Unveiled and reveals its randomized stats.

This distinction comes from Digital Extremes’ Update 32 notes. The notes specifically describe “???” as an indistinct Riven, explain that equipping it reveals the challenge and makes it Veiled, and state that completing the challenge makes it Unveiled.
How to unveil a Riven Mod
- Go to the Mods console. From the Orbiter, open the Mods console in the lower section of the ship. The Orbiter Guide identifies this console as the place to manage your Mods.
- Select the Riven marked “???”. Newly acquired indistinct Rivens appear without visible challenge text or statistics. Select the one you want to open.
- Equip it on an appropriate weapon. Use the Riven’s equip option and choose a compatible weapon. Equipping the Mod is the trigger that changes it from indistinct to Veiled; merely owning it does not reveal the challenge.
- Read the Veiled challenge exactly. Once equipped, the Riven displays its condition. Note every requirement shown, including the action, target, mission context, or any restrictions written in the challenge.
- Take the weapon into a mission. Use the Arsenal to equip the weapon and Mod, then enter a mission in which the listed condition can be completed. The challenge text on the Riven is the authority for what counts.
- Complete the stated condition. When the game recognizes the requirement, the Veiled Riven is unveiled and its randomized statistics are revealed. You can then inspect the finished Mod in your collection.
Digital Extremes’ Warframe: Mods Guide, published December 31, 2019, describes this general process as completing the in-game challenge listed on a Riven to unveil its properties. The Update 32 notes likewise state that challenge completion reveals the Mod’s stats.
Using a Veiled Riven Cipher instead
A Veiled Riven Cipher is an optional shortcut. When you use one on a Veiled Riven, it instantly completes one Veiled Riven Challenge rather than requiring you to perform the condition in a mission. The cipher is consumed when used.

Digital Extremes changed the cipher description in the Update 35: Whispers in the Walls notes to: “Use this cipher to instantly complete one Veiled Riven Challenge at the cost of consuming the cipher.” The official material establishes its effect and consumption, but does not establish current acquisition methods here. Do not assume that a particular activity, vendor, or reward is the way to obtain one without checking the current game.
What to do with a Riven marked “???”
A “???” label means the Riven is still indistinct. It is not broken, empty, or waiting for a separate identification item. Select it in the Mods interface and equip it on a compatible weapon. That action reveals the Veiled challenge.
Before equipping several indistinct Rivens, check your capacity. Update 32 distinguishes their storage behavior: indistinct “???” Rivens can stack and do not consume Riven slots while they remain unequipped. Once you equip one, it becomes Veiled and counts against your Riven-slot capacity. After you complete the challenge, it remains in the collection as an Unveiled Riven and continues to use a slot.

Where the Mods console and Arsenal fit
The Mods console and Arsenal serve different purposes in this procedure:
- Mods console: Find the Riven, select it, equip it, and inspect its challenge or revealed stats.
- Arsenal: Prepare the compatible weapon and its loadout for the mission. The official Orbiter Guide describes the Arsenal as the place to equip weapons and Mods.
- Mission: Perform the exact condition written on the Veiled Riven unless you use a cipher.
Interface labels and controller or keyboard inputs can change across platforms and later updates. If a button prompt differs from the wording above, follow the current prompt shown by your game client; the underlying sequence remains selecting the Riven, equipping it, and completing its displayed challenge.
Do you need a specific prerequisite?
There is no single prerequisite list in the cited official material that covers every possible Riven acquisition route. For the Sortie route specifically, Digital Extremes’ Update 35 notes state that Sorties require completion of The War Within and Mastery Rank 5. Those requirements explain access to Sorties; they are not a complete statement of every way a player may acquire a Riven.
If you already possess an indistinct Riven, the unveiling steps themselves begin in the Orbiter’s Mods console. The cited sources do not establish an additional universal quest, rank, or mission requirement for opening every Riven.
How to read and complete the challenge
Start from the text on the Mod
After equipping the Riven, read the complete challenge rather than relying on a remembered example. Riven challenges vary, and the condition displayed on your Mod determines what the game will track. The official guidance supports completing the challenge listed on the Mod; it does not provide one universal objective that applies to all Rivens.

Use the weapon carrying the Riven
Equip the Riven on the compatible weapon before entering the mission. If the Mod is not attached to the weapon being used, progress may not be credited because the unveiling condition is tied to the Riven’s equipped weapon. Confirm the loadout in the Arsenal after selecting the Riven.

Verify the result after the mission
Return to the Mods interface and inspect the Riven. Successful completion changes the state to Unveiled and replaces the challenge presentation with the Riven’s randomized statistics. If the challenge remains visible, it has not yet been completed according to the game’s tracking.

The Riven still shows “???”
- Open the Mods console and select the indistinct Riven.
- Use the equip action on a compatible weapon; owning the Mod alone does not reveal its challenge.
- Check that you are looking at the same Riven in the loadout and not another indistinct copy.
- If menu wording or button placement differs, follow the current platform prompt. Interface details can change even though equipping is still the reveal trigger.
No challenge appears after equipping
Confirm that the Riven actually changed from indistinct to Veiled. Update 32 describes the challenge as appearing when the “???” Riven is equipped on a weapon. If the state did not change, return to the Mods console and repeat the equip action with a compatible weapon, then inspect the Mod again.
The challenge did not complete in the mission
- Re-read every part of the displayed condition and use that wording as your checklist.
- Verify that the weapon carrying the Riven is the one used for the relevant action.
- Complete the condition again in a mission while the Riven remains equipped.
- If the requirement is inconvenient and you own a Veiled Riven Cipher, apply the cipher instead; it consumes one cipher and completes one challenge instantly.
You are out of Riven slots
Remember the state transition. An indistinct Riven does not use a slot until equipped, while Veiled and Unveiled Rivens do. If equipping a “???” Riven creates a capacity problem, manage your existing Riven collection before continuing.
You expected fixed stats
Unveiling does not produce a predetermined stat set. The process reveals randomized statistics for that Riven. The official sources cited here do not provide a named statistic or universal numerical range for the unveiling process, so the values shown in your game are the authoritative result for that Mod.

The meaningful choice is whether to spend a consumable shortcut or perform the challenge yourself.
- Choose normal completion if you can meet the displayed condition and want to keep your Veiled Riven Ciphers.
- Choose a cipher if the challenge is inconvenient, you need the Riven unveiled immediately, and you accept that one cipher will be consumed.
- Wait before equipping if you are managing capacity: an unequipped “???” Riven does not use a Riven slot under the Update 32 rules, but equipping it makes it count.
The cited Update 35 notes establish what the cipher does, not its current price, drop source, or availability. Check the current in-game inventory and menus before planning around one.
What happens after unveiling?
Once the challenge is complete, the Riven is Unveiled and its randomized stats are visible. The unveiling step is finished; subsequent decisions about using or managing the Mod are separate from opening it. Keep the Riven equipped if you want to inspect it in the weapon loadout, or return to the Mods console to review its revealed properties.
Because the resulting values are randomized, two unveiled Rivens need not display the same statistics. The official material reviewed for this procedure does not establish a guaranteed stat profile, fixed numerical outcome, or named bonus that every unveiled Riven receives.
