To test a PC racing wheel before gaming, connect it directly to power and your PC, let its startup calibration finish, then check steering, pedals, buttons and (if applicable) force feedback in Windows before opening a game. The quickest Windows check is joy.cpl, which opens Game Controllers. A successful Windows test confirms that the PC detects the wheel and its inputs; it does not confirm that a particular game supports your exact model or has the right controls configured.
1. Prepare the wheel and PC
Find the wheel’s exact model and platform variant before installing software or testing. Driver, firmware, installation and game support can differ even within one product family. Follow the instructions on the manufacturer’s support page for that model. Thrustmaster’s Windows test guidance covers the T128, T248, T150, TMX, T300, TX, T-GT, T-GT II, TS-XW and TS-PC force-feedback bases; it advises checking firmware and using model-specific drivers. Installation directions can be package-specific. For example, Thrustmaster’s T248 support page says to wait until prompted before connecting the wheel, avoid interacting with Windows-specific panes during package installation, and restart after setup. Follow those directions for the T248 package rather than treating them as universal instructions for other models or brands. Thrustmaster T248 support.
2. Check power, USB and startup calibration
- Connect the wheel’s power supply directly to a wall outlet and its USB cable directly to the PC. While diagnosing, avoid power strips, USB hubs and USB extension cords, as Thrustmaster recommends for its listed models.
- If the wheel is not detected, try another USB port. On a desktop PC, Thrustmaster recommends a rear port.
- Turn on or connect the wheel, then wait for startup calibration to finish. The documented movement is a turn to the left, a turn to the right, and a return to center.
If the wheel does not complete that movement or behaves abnormally, recheck the physical connections. If the problem remains, contact the manufacturer’s support rather than assuming the wheel is ready for a game.

3. Test Windows detection and inputs
- Install the current driver for your exact model, if its manufacturer requires one, and restart as directed by the installer.
- After connecting the wheel and waiting for calibration, type
joy.cplin Windows search and open Game Controllers. - Select the entry for your wheel or base—the displayed name varies by model—and choose Properties.
- Turn the wheel, press each pedal, and operate accessible buttons. Watch the on-screen indicators to confirm that steering and each control register.
For the force-feedback Thrustmaster models covered by its support instructions, open the Test Forces tab and run all 12 tests. Thrustmaster says a normal response means the wheel appears to perform within its criteria; missing or abnormal force feedback should be raised with its support team. If you have a Logitech G923, G29 or G920
Logitech’s connection troubleshooting for these models checks the power connection, recognition and received inputs in G HUB, then recognition and button operation in Windows Game Controllers. Check both places when diagnosing these named models. Logitech identifies registry editing as an advanced remedy for calibration issues or a blank Windows test page; it is not a first-line check. 4. Check compatibility and controls in the game
Once Windows detects the wheel and its inputs respond, check the intended game’s controller or wheel settings. Confirm steering, throttle, brake, clutch if present, buttons and force feedback in the game itself. Look up compatibility for the exact wheel model and game on the manufacturer’s support page. A model-specific compatibility list is useful guidance, not a guarantee for every game update. Thrustmaster’s T248 support page, for instance, lists PC games and notes special cases for some titles. If Windows tests succeed but the wheel does not work properly in one game, inspect that game’s bindings and wheel settings. If possible, try another game listed as compatible with your model. Working in a second game points toward a title-specific configuration issue rather than a basic PC connection failure.

5. Troubleshoot in a safe order
- Use direct power and USB connections; try another USB port if needed.
- Wait for the left-right-center startup calibration to complete.
- Install the current model-specific driver and restart as its installer directs.
- Check Windows detection and inputs in
joy.cpl; for Logitech G923, G29 and G920, also check G HUB. - Check the target game’s compatibility listing, bindings and wheel settings.
- If the problem persists, use the manufacturer’s model-specific support instructions or contact its support team.
Resetting Windows calibration is an escalation, not routine setup. Thrustmaster warns that Windows calibration can conflict with calibration performed by its product and driver. Its reset instructions describe uninstalling the driver, restarting, opening the device’s Properties and Settings tabs through joy.cpl to reset calibration, disconnecting the wheel, and reinstalling the driver.
