First identify your Xbox model: the original Xbox One uses an external power brick, while Xbox One S and Xbox Series X|S have internal power supplies. For the original Xbox One, check the connections, try a known-working wall outlet, and let a brick with no indicator light cool unplugged for 20 minutes before retrying. The indicator is only a clue—not proof that the brick can power the console under load.
Identify your Xbox model first
The external-brick checks below apply to the original Xbox One only. Xbox One S and Xbox Series X|S use internal power supplies, so an original Xbox One replacement brick will not solve a power problem on those consoles. Microsoft’s Xbox One power supply support page addresses the external supply; Microsoft’s Xbox Series X Digital Console Safety & Repair Instructions cover internal-console repair.
Check an original Xbox One power brick
- Turn off and unplug the equipment. Check that the wall lead is firmly seated in the brick and that the brick-to-console connection is secure.
- Inspect the cable and brick housing. Do not use equipment with visible damage.
- Try another known-working wall outlet. Connect directly to the outlet to rule out a faulty socket or an intermediary connection. This is among the basic checks recommended by iFixit’s Xbox One troubleshooting guidance.
- If the brick has no indicator light, let it cool. Unplug it for 20 minutes, then reconnect and retry. iFixit gives this cooling recommendation; it is not an official Microsoft diagnostic guarantee.
- Observe what happens when you retry. If the console still will not start, the fault could be the brick, the console, its connection, or another component. A lit indicator by itself cannot distinguish among them.
What the indicator can—and cannot—tell you
The indicator can help you notice that the brick is receiving power or has changed state, but it does not establish that the supply can deliver power to the console under load. The sources cited here do not verify a color-by-color diagnostic guide, so do not treat any one light color as proof that the brick is healthy or failed.
Is a multimeter test appropriate?
There is no Microsoft-published pinout, external-brick output specification, or sanctioned consumer multimeter procedure established here for testing the original Xbox One brick. A multimeter reading without the correct specifications and safe procedure would not provide a reliable diagnosis. Do not open the brick, guess at pin numbers, short pins to force an output, or probe the mains input.

Microsoft’s Series X repair guide warns that improper repair, incompatible parts, or improper tools can result in serious injury, death, or property damage. It tells readers: “If at any point you are unsure or uncomfortable about performing the repairs, as detailed in this Guide, DO NOT proceed. Contact Microsoft for additional support options.” That guidance concerns Series X Digital Console repairs, not a procedure for testing an original Xbox One external brick.
Choose between further checks, replacement, and repair
- Continue basic checks if you have not yet verified the outlet, connections, cable condition, and cooling step.
- Consider a replacement brick only for the original Xbox One when those checks have not resolved the issue and the brick is a plausible cause. Confirm the exact console compatibility, connector, and regional electrical requirements; the sources do not establish that any particular listing or seller is official or suitable.
- Seek model-specific service for an Xbox One S or Series X|S, or if basic checks do not resolve the problem. These models have internal supplies; internal PSU work is a model-specific repair, not an external-brick swap.
Microsoft’s Series X repair guide names Microsoft Xbox Repair & Replacement and iFixit as parts channels for that console. Check current availability and whether a service or part applies to your specific model and location.
