Mending’s repair behavior is not something you can speed up with a setting: more usable XP means more chances to restore durability. If another damaged Mending item is also eligible, an orb may repair that instead, so remove other damaged Mending gear when you want to focus on one tool.
What makes Mending repair faster?
Mending uses experience to repair an enchanted item; Microsoft’s Minecraft creator documentation describes it as: “Item will be repaired at the cost of experience.” Microsoft Learn’s enchantment introduction covers the effect at a high level.
A community guide reports that one XP point restores two durability points. Treat that figure as a reported game mechanic, not as an official numeric specification: Microsoft’s documentation reviewed here does not state the rate. The community guide to Mending and XP repair gives the rate and explains the repair behavior.
In practical terms, spend less time waiting between XP gains and make sure the item you want repaired can receive the orbs. The amount restored depends on the XP collected; there is no separate Mending speed upgrade described in the cited documentation.

How to focus repairs on one item
The community guide reports that when multiple damaged Mending items are eligible, an orb selects a repair target at random. That can make a particular tool seem slow to mend because some orbs go toward other gear.
- Take off other damaged Mending equipment that could receive XP orbs.
- Keep the tool or item you want repaired equipped in a slot appropriate for that item and your edition.
- Collect XP while the target item remains eligible to receive it.
Equipment-slot behavior can vary by edition and item type, and the sources cited here do not establish that every slot works identically across current editions. If the target does not appear to be repairing, check that it is equipped in a supported slot for your version and that you have removed competing damaged Mending items.

Where to get XP for a repair session
Use a repeatable XP source that suits your world and edition. The Minecraft Wiki’s experience-farming tutorial describes experience as fuel for Mending and discusses farms as a way to collect it. Farm designs, compatibility, setup effort, safety, and output can depend on the version and edition; the available sources do not establish one universally fastest farm or provide comparable current XP-per-hour figures.
- Choose an XP source you can use reliably in your current world.
- Check that the farm or method matches your Minecraft edition and version before building or relying on it.
- Make sure you can collect its resulting orbs while the item you want to repair is eligible to receive them.
Does a new Mending book make repairs faster?
No. A book gives an item the Mending enchantment; it does not increase the rate at which Mending repairs it. Microsoft’s creator documentation says villagers can provide enchanted books and describes using an anvil to apply a book to an item. If your item already has Mending, focus on collecting XP and preventing other eligible damaged Mending gear from drawing repair orbs. If it does not have the enchantment, acquiring and applying a Mending book is a way to add it—not a way to accelerate the repair effect.
