How to Train a StarCraft II Bot With the Blizzard API and Ladder Replays

A practical guide to building a live SC2 agent, turning ladder replays into data, and understanding why research-environment results do not guarantee ladder readiness.

To build a StarCraft II bot, connect an agent to a running game through Blizzard’s API, then repeatedly observe the game and send actions. To learn from ladder games, decode replay files separately and turn their events into training examples or evaluation data. Replays do not provide a ready-made training pipeline, and success in a simplified research setup does not establish that a bot can compete on the human Battle.net ladder.

What the StarCraft II API does—and what replay data does not do

Blizzard describes the SC2 API as “an interface that provides full external control of StarCraft II.” It lets an external program interact with the game, making it useful for scripted bots, machine-learning agents, replay analysis, and tool-assisted play. The API is defined with Protocol Buffers; Blizzard’s C++ client library communicates with the game client over WebSocket. These are the live-control interfaces, not replay-training tools.

Replay files record game data that can be decoded and analyzed. They can supply examples of player behavior, but they do not automatically specify the observation format, action labels, filtering, or learning objective your model needs. Treat live interaction and replay processing as two linked but distinct parts of a project.

Choose how your bot will interact with the game

For a Python-first project, BurnySc2/python-sc2 is a documented high-level wrapper; its introduction lists Python 3.9 or newer and a StarCraft II installation as requirements. For lower-level control, use Blizzard’s protocol definitions and the C++ s2client-api. Blizzard’s repository also links PySC2.

The important design choice is the abstraction your policy consumes. A research interface may present preprocessed observations and a simplified action set; direct API interaction exposes game state and API actions. Decide early whether your goal is a research experiment, a general-purpose bot, replay analysis, or a route toward competition: these choices affect what your agent sees, what actions it can issue, and which results are meaningful.

Build the live game loop before adding machine learning

Start with a minimal agent that can complete a match. Blizzard’s protocol documentation describes the basic cycle: launch a client, create or join a game, request an observation, process it, send actions, and repeat until the game ends. Step mode synchronizes progress between clients, which is useful when coordinating matches.

  1. Launch the client and establish a game. Use the selected interface to start StarCraft II, then create or join the intended game.
  2. Request an observation. Read the current game state through the interface you selected.
  3. Choose and send actions. Begin with a fixed opening or a small set of explicit rules rather than a complex learned policy.
  4. Check whether actions worked. The protocol allows actions to fail validation immediately or later during execution. Inspect action responses and subsequent observations instead of assuming a command succeeded.
  5. Repeat until the game ends. Record the result and enough context to reproduce or interpret it.

As a recommended development practice, log observations, chosen actions, action failures, outcome, map, race matchup, and game version. This gives you a debugging trail and a way to compare later policy changes; it is not a claim that any particular bot or result has been tested.

Use ladder replays as data, not as a complete training system

Blizzard’s project resources link packs of 1v1 ladder replays and maps. The resource page says access to Linux packages, maps, and replay packs requires agreement to Blizzard’s AI and Machine Learning License. The replays are game data; the work of turning them into a dataset remains yours.

Decode replay files

Blizzard’s s2protocol decodes replay structures and events. Its documented data includes replay headers, game details, initialization data, game events, message events, and tracker events. The project cautions that it is a low-level first step for data mining, not a high-level replay-analysis package; it does not itself provide high-level analysis or game-balance information.

Define the learning target

Before extracting a large dataset, specify how replay information maps to your agent. Decide which observations are available to the policy, which replay events correspond to its action representation, what outcome or behavior is the target, and how you will filter and normalize examples. A replay event stream and a live agent’s observation/action interface may not line up directly. You need an explicit conversion or alignment strategy if you want replay-derived behavior to train the live policy.

Keep data provenance with each example

Retain the replay identity and relevant game details alongside derived examples. In particular, preserve map and game-version information so you can distinguish changes caused by a policy from differences in the game data or environment.

Make replay playback reproducible

SC2 replays rely on deterministic simulation: playback re-simulates recorded inputs, so the matching patch, binary, data version, and map dependencies matter. Blizzard’s protocol documentation says a replay-info request can report version values. Keep the replay, map dependencies, client build and data identifiers, and parser version together in your experiment metadata.

Map dependency behavior differs by platform: Blizzard documents that ladder replay map dependencies may be downloaded automatically on Windows and macOS, but explicitly excludes Linux from that behavior. On Linux, plan to manage the required maps and dependencies rather than assuming playback will fetch them.

Evaluate in stages and report the setting

Begin with controlled offline matches. Then vary maps and repeated runs, and account for race matchup when comparing policies. For each result, record the sample size, opponent type or strength, map, game version, race matchup, and whether the games were against offline AI, a bot ladder, or human opponents. A win rate without those conditions can make unlike experiments look comparable.

The SC2LE paper describes a particular research environment: preprocessed observations, a simplified action space, lock-step execution, and full-game play against built-in AI. In the experiments it reports, its baseline agents did not learn to beat the easiest built-in AI. That is a result for the paper’s environment and baseline methods—not a conclusion about every later method or current game version, and not evidence that a model trained there is ready for human ladder play.

Can you put the bot on a StarCraft II ladder?

Blizzard’s repository lists SC2AI and AI Arena as unofficial, community-run bot ladders. The reviewed project information does not establish whether either currently accepts submissions or what its current participation rules are. Check the organizer’s current instructions before planning around a specific ladder. Likewise, the documented replay packs establish access to replay data, not a currently available official Battle.net player-profile or ladder endpoint for collecting live statistics.

For a practical route, build and debug the agent against controlled games first, validate that it behaves as intended with the exact game version and maps you use, and only then investigate a community ladder’s current entry process. Do not treat replay-pack access or API access as proof of eligibility for a human competitive ladder.
