For Bedrock Edition, Minecraft’s documented cross-device method is to upload the world to a Realm on the old device, then download it on the new one. Android worlds stored in External storage can also be copied by USB, and Xbox provides cloud-save controls for uploading and downloading worlds.
Choose a transfer method
| Situation | Method | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Bedrock world moving between supported devices | Upload it to a Realm slot on the source device, then download it from that slot on the destination device. | Use the same Microsoft account, update Minecraft on both devices, and have an active Realms trial or paid subscription. Minecraft’s transfer guide covers this procedure. |
| Bedrock world on Android with File Storage Location set to External | Copy the world folder to a computer or another Android device using USB file transfer. | This applies only to worlds stored in External, not Application storage. See Minecraft’s Android backup guide. |
| World moving between Xbox consoles or being restored on Xbox | Use Minecraft’s Manage Worlds controls to upload a local-only world or download a cloud-only one. | Sign in to the Microsoft account and connect the console online. See Minecraft’s Xbox cloud-save instructions. |
| Java Edition or a Java-to-Bedrock move | Not established by the official instructions cited here. | Do not use the Bedrock steps as if they covered Java or edition conversion. |
Transfer a Bedrock world with Realms
Minecraft’s official Realms instructions describe uploading a world from the source device and downloading it on the destination. The download becomes a local copy; it appears on the destination device’s Worlds tab with “- Copy” appended to its name. Realms availability and account sign-in are required for this route. Follow Minecraft’s Bedrock transfer guide if menu wording differs on your platform.

Before starting
- Update Minecraft on both devices.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account on each device.
- Confirm you have an active Realms trial or paid subscription.
- Console players may also need their platform’s online service subscription to play online. On PlayStation, Minecraft says to link a Microsoft account to the PlayStation Network account to use Realms. Minecraft’s account information explains the account relationship.
Upload from the old device
- Open Minecraft and select Play.
- Open the Realms tab and choose the Realm.
- Open Realms Hub, select a slot, and choose Edit World.
- If the slot is empty, choose Upload World. If it already contains a world, choose Replace World.
Download to the new device
- Sign in to the same Microsoft account and open Play > Realms.
- Choose the same Realm and slot, then open Edit World.
- Select Download World.
- Open the destination device’s Worlds tab and check that the downloaded “- Copy” world opens correctly.
Copy an Android world through a computer
This file-copy method is for Bedrock worlds whose File Storage Location was set to External. Minecraft directs users with worlds set to Application storage to use the Realms transfer method instead. A Microsoft account alone does not copy local world files. Minecraft’s Android backup guide documents the External-storage workflow.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Connect the Android device to a computer with a USB cable that supports data transfer and fits both devices’ ports.
- On the phone, select File Transfer or MTP when prompted.
- On the computer, browse to
Android/data/com.mojang.minecraftpe/files/games/com.mojang/minecraftWorlds. - Copy the entire
minecraftWorldsfolder or the individual world folder you want to move. - Transfer the copy to the destination device using a compatible route, then confirm Minecraft can see and open the world before removing the original.
Use Xbox cloud saves
Minecraft ties Xbox cloud saves to the Microsoft account. When the console is online and signed in, worlds are backed up automatically. New worlds are backed up when created; worlds created offline are backed up the first time they are played online. A world that has not been played while online may still exist only on that console. Minecraft’s Xbox cloud-save guide describes these behaviors.

- On Xbox, open Minecraft and go to Settings > Storage > Manage Worlds.
- Check the world’s status: it can be cloud-synced, cloud-only, or local-only.
- Choose the available upload option for a local-only world, or download a cloud-only world on the console where you want to play it.
- If a local file is missing or out of date, use the guide’s cloud-save restore option for a recent cloud save.
Protect the world before replacing a Realm slot
Replace World replaces the world in that Realm slot and can cost you progress. Before using it, download the world you want to preserve; a downloaded Realm world appears in the local worlds list and can be played offline. Check the destination copy before deleting or overwriting the source. Minecraft’s Realm management guide covers downloading and replacing worlds.
Realms is not a permanent archive. Minecraft says Realm backups are created every 30 minutes, when a player selects Save & Quit, and when they disconnect. Minecraft also states that a Realm world can be downloaded within 18 months after the subscription expires, while backups associated with the Realm are deleted 30 days after expiry. These are Minecraft’s stated retention policies and may change; check the current Realm management guidance before relying on them as long-term storage.

What about Java Edition?
The official instructions cited here document the Realms transfer steps for Bedrock, the Android file-copy route for External-storage worlds, and Xbox cloud saves. They do not establish a Java Edition transfer procedure or a Java-to-Bedrock conversion method. Because world files and transfer options depend on edition and platform, do not assume that the Bedrock Realms steps will move a Java world.
