To transfer a Windows file to a remote server with PuTTY, use PSCP for a single command-line copy or PSFTP for an interactive session with repeated uploads and remote browsing. PuTTY’s terminal client is not itself the file-transfer command: PSCP and PSFTP are the companion utilities that move files over SSH.

This guide answers “how to transfer local files to a remote server using PuTTY,” including the common searches “how to upload a file with PuTTY,” “PuTTY pscp command,” and “PuTTY psftp upload.”

What PuTTY uses for file transfers

PuTTY is a Windows Telnet and SSH client suite. Its terminal program gives you a shell session, while the suite’s file-transfer tools perform the upload:

  • PSCP (PuTTY Secure Copy) makes a one-shot copy over SSH. It is the practical choice for one file, a group selected by a wildcard, or a repeatable script.
  • PSFTP (PuTTY SFTP client) opens an interactive SFTP session over SSH-2. It is better when you need to browse remote directories, change your local working directory, and run several put or get commands.

In either case, the remote server must accept SSH connections, and the account you use must have write permission in the destination directory. Being able to sign in does not automatically grant permission to create files everywhere on the server.

PuTTY’s documentation describes PSFTP as “a tool for transferring files securely between computers using an SSH connection.” The distinction between the two utilities is workflow: PSCP starts, copies, and exits; PSFTP stays open until you leave the session.

PSCP or PSFTP: which should you choose?

What you need to do Use Why it fits
Copy one file or run a simple script PSCP It performs a one-shot command-line copy over SSH.
Select several files interactively PSFTP You can issue repeated put and get commands.
Browse remote folders while transferring PSFTP Its interactive shell includes directory browsing and remote file operations.
Use SFTP over SSH-2 PSFTP PSFTP uses SFTP, an SSH-2 feature.
Target a broad range of SSH servers with a simple copy PSCP PuTTY documentation says PSCP should work on virtually every SSH server.

If you already know the exact local and remote paths, start with PSCP. If you are unsure where to place the file or expect to upload several items, start PSFTP so you can inspect the remote location before transferring.

Before you upload: requirements and path checks

Install the PuTTY utilities

Install the PuTTY package that includes pscp.exe and psftp.exe. Windows must be able to find the executable you call. You can either open Command Prompt in the folder containing the executable or add that folder to the Windows PATH environment variable.

A quick availability check is to open Command Prompt and enter the utility name. If Windows reports that the command is not recognized, use the troubleshooting steps later in this guide before attempting a transfer.

Collect the connection details

  • The SSH username for the remote account.
  • The server’s host name or IP address.
  • The authentication method configured for that account, such as a password or key.
  • The remote directory where the account is allowed to write.
  • The SSH port if the server uses a non-default port configured by your administrator.

Keep the destination directory exact. A successful SSH login proves authentication, not write access to every directory.

Use Windows paths carefully

Command Prompt treats spaces as separators. Put a local path in double quotes whenever a folder or filename contains a space. Absolute paths are safer than relying on whichever directory Command Prompt currently uses. For example, this quoted path identifies one specific file:

C:UsersNameDocumentsreport.txt

Upload one local file with PSCP

PSCP accepts a local source followed by a destination in the form [user@]host:target. Open Command Prompt, change to the directory containing pscp.exe if it is not on PATH, and run:

pscp "C:UsersNameDocumentsreport.txt" [email protected]:/home/user/uploads/

The command has two sides:

  • "C:UsersNameDocumentsreport.txt" is the local Windows file.
  • [email protected]:/home/user/uploads/ identifies the SSH account, server, and remote directory. The colon separates the host from the remote target.

PSCP then authenticates to the SSH server and transfers the file. Follow the authentication method configured for the account. If the command finishes without a permission error, check the remote directory from an SSH session or with PSFTP to confirm that the file is present.

Choose the remote filename explicitly

Appending a filename after the destination directory tells PSCP exactly what the remote file should be called:

pscp "C:UsersNameDocumentsreport.txt" [email protected]:/home/user/uploads/report.txt

This is useful when the server-side name must differ from the local name or when you want the destination to be unambiguous. The account still needs write permission for that directory.

Upload several matching files with a wildcard

PSCP can copy multiple local files selected by a wildcard. This example sends every CSV file in the local reports folder to the remote upload directory:

pscp "C:UsersNameDocumentsreports*.csv" [email protected]:/home/user/uploads/

Keep the wildcard inside the quoted Windows path. The pattern is evaluated against the local files, while the remote argument remains the account, host, and destination directory.

Use PSCP in a repeatable script

A fixed source and destination make PSCP suitable for a batch file or another scheduled process. Put the complete command, including quotes around paths with spaces, in the script. Test it manually first so that authentication, host details, and destination permissions are known to work. A script cannot correct a wrong path or a server account that lacks write access; it will fail with the same connection or permission problem as an interactive command.

Upload through an interactive PSFTP session

PSFTP is useful when you need to inspect the remote location, upload several files, or alternate between downloads and uploads. Start it from Command Prompt with the account and host:

psftp [email protected]

After authentication, PSFTP displays its psftp> prompt. The following sequence changes the local working directory, lists the remote directory, uploads one file, and closes the session:

dir
lcd C:UsersNameDocuments
put report.txt
quit

Understand each PSFTP command

  • dir lists the current remote directory. Use it to see where you are and to inspect existing names before uploading.
  • lcd C:UsersNameDocuments changes PSFTP’s local working directory. After this command, a relative name such as report.txt refers to that Windows folder.
  • put report.txt uploads the named local file to the current remote directory.
  • quit ends the PSFTP session.

For repeated transfers, leave the session open and issue additional put commands. PSFTP also supports get for downloading files, so the same session can move files in both directions. Directory browsing and other remote file operations are the reason to choose PSFTP instead of launching PSCP for every file.

Use absolute local paths when the working directory is unclear

You can set the local directory with lcd before using short filenames. This reduces typing and makes a sequence easier to read. If you are diagnosing a “file not found” problem, use an absolute Windows path in the put command or set lcd to a folder you can verify in File Explorer, then list the local files from that location as supported by your PSFTP version.

Remote destinations, permissions, and successful authentication

The remote portion of a PSCP command and the current remote location in PSFTP must point to a directory where the account can create or replace files. Server administrators often provide a user-specific upload directory; use that location rather than assuming a system directory is writable.

These two checks are separate:

  1. Authentication: the server accepts the username and password or configured key.
  2. Authorization: the authenticated account is allowed to write in the selected destination.

If authentication succeeds but the transfer returns “permission denied,” keep the connection details and change only the destination to a directory that the account owns or has been granted write access to. Do not treat a login success as evidence that the original destination is valid.

How to verify an upload

Verify with PSFTP

Open PSFTP for the same account and use dir in the destination directory. Confirm the expected filename appears. If you uploaded to a directory with an explicit remote filename, check that exact name rather than the local one.

Verify from an SSH shell

If you have a normal SSH terminal session, inspect the destination directory there after PSCP exits. This separates a transfer problem from a mistaken assumption about the remote working directory.

Verify the local source before retrying

On Windows, confirm that the source file exists at the exact path in the command. For paths containing spaces, ensure both opening and closing double quotes are present. A failed local path and a failed remote permission check produce different fixes, so identify which side failed before changing commands.

Troubleshooting PuTTY file transfers

“pscp is not recognized” or “psftp is not recognized”

Windows cannot find the executable. Run the command from the directory containing pscp.exe or psftp.exe, or add that directory to PATH. Reopen Command Prompt after changing environment settings so the new path is available. This issue occurs before any SSH connection is attempted.

Authentication failure

Check the username, host name or IP address, SSH port, password, and configured key. Make sure the account is enabled on the server and that you are using the same connection details that work for your normal SSH client. A typo in the host or username can look similar to a rejected password, so verify each value rather than changing the destination path.

Permission denied after login

The server accepted the SSH credentials, but the account cannot write to the requested destination. Use a directory where that account has write permission, or ask the server administrator to grant the needed access. Changing the local filename does not solve a remote directory permission problem.

The local file cannot be found

Use an absolute Windows path and quote it when it contains spaces. Check the spelling, extension, and capitalization shown in File Explorer. For a group upload, confirm that the wildcard actually matches files in the specified folder; an incorrect folder or pattern leaves PSCP with no intended source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You need several uploads or remote browsing

Switch from a sequence of separate PSCP commands to PSFTP. Start with psftp [email protected], inspect the remote location with dir, set the local folder with lcd, and issue each put command from the same session.

SFTP is unavailable

PSFTP requires the server’s SSH-2/SFTP support. If the server does not provide that protocol, PSFTP cannot establish the required session. Use PSCP when the server’s supported SSH transfer arrangement calls for it, or ask the administrator which SSH file-transfer protocol is enabled.

The file appears in an unexpected location

With PSCP, read the remote argument after the colon carefully; the final directory or filename determines the target. With PSFTP, the current remote directory matters. Run dir before put and use an explicit remote location in your workflow so that the upload is not dependent on an unknown starting directory.

Practical decision checklist

  • Use PSCP when one command can fully describe the transfer: local source, account, host, and remote target.
  • Use PSCP with a wildcard when a local filename pattern selects the files you want to send.
  • Use PSFTP when you must browse, upload repeatedly, download with get, or work interactively.
  • Quote every Windows path that contains spaces.
  • Confirm the account can write to the remote directory before diagnosing the local command.
  • Keep pscp.exe and psftp.exe either in the current Command Prompt directory or on PATH.
  • When a transfer fails, classify it first as an executable-path, local-path, authentication, protocol, or remote-permission issue.

Which command should you use first?

For a single known file, begin with:

pscp "C:UsersNameDocumentsreport.txt" [email protected]:/home/user/uploads/

For an exploratory or multi-file session, begin with:

psftp [email protected]

Inside PSFTP, use dir to inspect the remote location, lcd to select the local folder, and put for each upload. Those two starting points cover the ordinary “PuTTY pscp command” and “PuTTY psftp upload” workflows without confusing the terminal client with the utilities that actually transfer files.
