The correct way to transfer a Minecraft world depends on the edition. For Java Edition, copy the world folder from %appdata%.minecraftsaves to the same folder on the new PC. For Bedrock Edition for Windows, export the world as a .mcworld file or upload it to Realms and download it on the new computer. Java and Bedrock worlds cannot be moved between editions by simply copying files.
Keep the original world untouched until the copy opens successfully on the new PC.

Choose the right transfer method
| Situation | Best method |
|---|---|
| Java Edition to Java Edition | Copy the world folder or an extracted backup ZIP. |
| Bedrock to Bedrock, without Realms | Export and import a .mcworld file. |
| Bedrock to Bedrock, easiest workflow | Upload the world to Realms, then download it on the new PC. |
| Java to Bedrock or Bedrock to Java | Use a separate conversion tool; direct copying will not work reliably. |
| Modded Java world | Copy the world and recreate the same Minecraft version, mod loader, mods and configuration. |
Before transferring anything, identify the edition in the Minecraft Launcher. Java worlds appear in Java Edition’s Singleplayer menu. Bedrock worlds are managed from the Play screen under Minecraft for Windows.
Your Microsoft account provides access to the game on the new computer, but ordinary local worlds do not automatically synchronize between PCs. Sign in on the new computer with the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft; official account guidance is available in Minecraft’s new-device instructions.

Before you copy the world
- Open the world on the old PC and confirm it contains your latest progress.
- Exit to the title screen.
- Quit Minecraft completely, then close the Launcher.
- Create a separate backup before transferring the working copy.
- Do not delete or overwrite the old copy until the new PC has opened and been checked.
Closing the game matters because copying a save while Minecraft is writing to it can produce an incomplete or inconsistent backup.
Transfer a Java world from PC to PC
Copy the world folder
On the old Windows PC
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
%appdata%.minecraftsavesand press Enter. - Find the folder whose name matches your world.
- Copy that folder to a USB drive, external SSD, network share or cloud-storage folder.
The default Java save location on Windows is documented by Minecraft’s official Java transfer guide.
On the new Windows PC
- Install Java Edition and launch it once, then close the game.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
%appdata%.minecraftsaves. - Paste the copied world folder into that directory.
- Launch Java Edition and select Singleplayer.
The world should appear in the list. Open it and check your spawn area, inventory, builds and any important farms or redstone systems before treating the transfer as complete.
Use a ZIP backup instead
A ZIP is useful for USB, network or cloud transfers because it keeps the save together as one file. However, Java cannot use a ZIP merely sitting inside the saves folder. Extract the ZIP first, then place the actual world folder containing level.dat in .minecraftsaves.

You can locate Java backups from a world’s Edit menu by choosing Open Backups Folder. Minecraft also documents backup locations through the Launcher in its Java storage and backup guide.
Custom Java installations and modded profiles
%appdata%.minecraftsaves is the default location, not a guarantee. A custom Launcher installation, modded profile or profile using another game directory may store worlds elsewhere. Open the relevant installation’s folder from the Launcher and use that profile’s saves directory. Launch the same profile on the new PC after recreating its environment.
For a modded world, also record the Minecraft version, mod loader, mod list, configuration files, datapacks, resource packs and shader setup. The world folder alone does not install those components.
Java on macOS
If the old or new computer is a Mac, the standard Java save location is:

The same rule applies: copy the world folder, not just a ZIP, into the destination saves directory.
Transfer a Bedrock world without Realms
For Bedrock Edition for Windows, the most practical no-subscription route is an in-game world export. This avoids relying on a single hard-coded Bedrock app-data path, which can vary with the Windows installation and permissions.
- On the old PC, open Minecraft for Windows and select Play.
- Find the world and select its pencil/Edit button.
- Choose Export World and save the resulting
.mcworldfile somewhere accessible. - Transfer the file to the new PC using a USB drive, external SSD, network share or cloud storage.
- On the new PC, open the
.mcworldfile with Minecraft. If the file association does not work, use the game’s available import option. - Open the Bedrock Play screen and confirm that the world appears in the Worlds list.
Menu wording can vary between Bedrock builds. Use the current export/import controls shown by your installation rather than renaming files manually.
Keep the extension as .mcworld. If Windows has changed it to .zip, restore the original extension only after enabling visible file extensions in File Explorer. Do not assume that copying Java’s .minecraftsaves directory will transfer a Bedrock world.

Transfer a Bedrock world with Realms
Realms is an optional cloud intermediary. It is convenient when you do not want to locate Bedrock’s protected local files or when the two PCs are in different locations.
Upload the world on the old PC
- Launch Minecraft and select Play.
- Open the Realms tab and choose the Realm.
- Open Settings.
- Select a Realm world slot.
- Choose Edit World.
- At the bottom of Game Settings, choose Upload World for an empty slot or Replace World to overwrite an existing slot.
- Confirm the upload and wait for it to finish.
If replacing a Realm world, download or otherwise preserve the current Realm version first. Replacing a slot can discard its current progress; see Minecraft’s Realm world replacement guidance.
The Tool Desk

- Install Minecraft for Windows and update it.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account used to upload the world.
- Select Play, open the Realms tab and select the Realm.
- Open Settings and select the slot containing the uploaded world.
- Choose Edit World, then select Download World at the bottom of Game Settings.
- Return to the Worlds list and look for the downloaded copy, normally named after the original world with – Copy added.
Minecraft documents this upload/download workflow in its Bedrock storage guide. Both computers should be updated, and the destination must use the same Microsoft account.
Realms limitations
- Java and Bedrock Realms are edition-specific. Realms does not make a Java world directly playable in Bedrock or vice versa; see the official Realms page.
- Bedrock Realm uploads have a documented maximum world size of 4 GB. A larger world needs a local export or another supported file-transfer route; see Minecraft’s Realm upload-limit guidance.
- Realms is a subscription service, although Minecraft may offer eligibility-dependent trials. Check the current official pricing and terms before subscribing.
- Do not treat Realm storage as your only permanent archive. Download important worlds locally and keep dated backups.
Can you transfer a Java world to Bedrock?
Not by copying the save folder. Java and Bedrock use different world formats, so a Java world cannot simply be placed in the Bedrock Worlds list, and a Bedrock world cannot simply be opened by Java.

Moving between editions requires a conversion tool and should be treated as a separate project. Conversion can alter or omit blocks, entities, inventories, commands, redstone behavior, datapacks, mods, add-ons and other data. Make a full backup of the original before attempting it, and verify the converted world carefully.

What else needs to be transferred?
A world save is not the same thing as your complete Minecraft setup.
- Java mods and mod loaders: Recreate the same loader, Minecraft version, mods and configuration files.
- Datapacks: Copy them from the world or recreate them if they are not already included in your backup.
- Resource packs and shaders: These may be stored separately from the world.
- Bedrock add-ons: Confirm that behavior packs and resource packs are present and enabled after import.
- Launcher profiles: Installation directories, Java arguments and selected profiles do not automatically follow the world.
- Settings: Keybindings, video settings, controls and server lists are separate from most world data.
- Screenshots: Copy the screenshots folder separately if you want to keep it.
- Marketplace content: Ownership and downloaded content depend on the Microsoft account and may need to be downloaded again.
In multiplayer situations, account identity can affect player-specific data. Minecraft’s account guidance warns that using a different account in an existing multiplayer world can make that account appear as a new player without the original items.
If the Java world does not appear
- Check that the copied item is an extracted folder, not a ZIP.
- Check the folder structure. It should look like
.minecraftsavesWorldNamelevel.dat, not.minecraftsavesWorldNameWorldNamelevel.dat. - Launch the same Java profile or custom game directory used on the old PC.
- Check whether the world was created in a modded installation.
- Create a temporary test world. If the test world saves and appears normally, the issue is probably the copied save or its version/mod dependencies.
- If the world is marked incompatible or crashes, restore the backup rather than overwriting your only copy.
If the Bedrock world does not appear
- Confirm that both computers are running Minecraft for Windows, not Java Edition.
- Confirm the file ends in
.mcworld, not.zip. - Try opening the file from File Explorer again or use Bedrock’s import control.
- Check that the destination Microsoft account owns or can access Minecraft.
- For Realms, confirm that the upload completed and that the same account and Realm slot are selected.
- Check available storage on the destination PC.
- If the world exceeds 4 GB, use local export/file transfer instead of Realms.
If the old PC no longer works
If the old drive is readable, connect it to another Windows computer and copy the world before attempting repairs or reinstalling anything.
For Java, inspect the old user profile at:
C:Users<old-username>AppDataRoaming.minecraftsaves
Also search the relevant Java installation’s backups folder for ZIP backups. For Bedrock, local recovery depends on the installation and Windows storage model, so avoid deleting or reinstalling the game before checking for local data. If the world was previously uploaded to Realms, downloading it from the Realm is usually safer than relying on the damaged PC.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Free transfer options
For a one-time move, a USB flash drive, external SSD or local network share is usually sufficient. Cloud storage is also useful, but upload a ZIP made after closing Minecraft rather than syncing a live world folder while the game is running. This reduces the risk of sync conflicts and partial files.
After the transfer
- Open the copied world and check recent builds, inventory, location and important mechanisms.
- Keep the old PC copy until the new one has been tested.
- Create dated ZIP backups before game-version upgrades, mod changes or Realm replacements.
- Keep at least two independent backup copies for valuable worlds.
- Download important Realm worlds locally instead of relying indefinitely on an active subscription. Minecraft’s current Realms information states that downloadable access after expiration is time-limited.
Quick reference
| Edition | Transfer format | Where it appears |
|---|---|---|
| Java | World folder or extracted ZIP | Java Edition > Singleplayer |
| Bedrock | .mcworld export or Realm download |
Minecraft for Windows > Play > Worlds |
| Java and Bedrock | Converted copy using a separate tool | Depends on the conversion method |
The Bottom Line
For Java, copy the world folder into the new PC’s .minecraftsaves directory. For Bedrock, export a .mcworld file or use Realms. In every case, back up first, use the same edition on both PCs, and keep the original until the transferred world has been verified.
