Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYes—you can move your The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time progress to another Nintendo Switch. Use Nintendo’s nearby-console save transfer when the original Switch is available. It does not require Nintendo Switch Online, but it does move the selected save rather than copy it: Nintendo deletes the source save after the transfer. If the old console is unavailable, restore an existing Save Data Cloud backup instead; that route requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and replaces the destination save for the game.
Ocarina of Time is provided through the Nintendo 64 Classics library, so opening the game itself requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. That library-access requirement is separate from the requirements for moving the save.

Choose the method that fits your situation
There are two practical ways to get your Ocarina of Time progress onto another Switch. Pick one before changing, resetting, selling or deleting anything on the old console.

| Decision | Nearby console transfer | Save Data Cloud restore |
|---|---|---|
| Is the old Switch required? | Yes, and both consoles must be available during the transfer. | No, provided an eligible cloud backup already exists. |
| Nintendo Switch Online membership | Not required. Nintendo states this explicitly in its nearby save-transfer instructions. | Required to access and download Save Data Cloud backups. |
| Network and location | Both consoles need internet access and must be near each other. | The destination needs internet access and sign-in to the Nintendo Account that owns the backup. |
| What happens to the source or destination? | The selected save is sent to the new console and deleted from the old one. | The download replaces the destination’s existing save for that game. |
| Best use | You still have the original Switch and want to move its current progress. | The original Switch is lost, damaged, unavailable or already wiped, but a cloud backup exists. |
Do not treat either option as a routine copy. Nearby transfer removes the selected source save, while a cloud download overwrites the destination’s current save for that software.

- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps

What you need before starting
For a nearby transfer
- The original Switch containing the progress and the replacement Switch.
- Internet access on both systems, with the consoles physically near each other.
- A user on each console linked to the same Nintendo Account.
- Both systems updated enough to display the current transfer menus.
- The Ocarina of Time software available on the destination Switch through Nintendo 64 Classics.
Nintendo’s nearby-transfer procedure does not require a Nintendo Switch Online membership. You still need access to the Nintendo 64 Classics library to launch Ocarina of Time after the move, which normally means Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.
For a cloud restore
- An active Nintendo Switch Online membership on the Nintendo Account that owns the backup.
- An existing Save Data Cloud backup for the relevant software and user.
- A compatible Switch or Switch 2 signed in to that Nintendo Account.
- Internet access while checking and downloading the backup.
Cloud restore cannot recreate a save that was never backed up. If membership expired, Nintendo says access to prior cloud backups can be restored by resubscribing within 180 days; do not assume a backup remains available indefinitely without membership.
Recommended method: transfer the save directly between nearby Switch consoles
Use this route when the old Switch still works and contains the progress you want. The transfer is performed from the system settings rather than from inside Ocarina of Time.
1. Prepare both consoles
- Connect both Switch consoles to the internet.
- Install any available system updates on both devices.
- Place the consoles close together. Keep them powered on and connected to their chargers if either battery is low.
- On the replacement Switch, make sure the intended user is linked to the same Nintendo Account as the user who owns the save on the original Switch.
The account match matters. A different account on the destination will not receive the original user’s save through this process.
2. Start the sending process on the old Switch
- Open the HOME Menu.
- Choose System Settings.
- Select Data Management.
- Choose Transfer Your Save Data.
- Select Send Save Data to Another Console.
- Follow the prompt to choose the user whose save should move.
- When the software list appears, select the Ocarina of Time-related entry shown for that user, then continue.
Nintendo’s general instructions do not establish the exact text of the Ocarina of Time entry in this list. The game is delivered through Nintendo 64 Classics, and the displayed software name can depend on the system’s installed software and account state. Select the relevant entry that actually appears; do not rely on a promised label that is not shown on your console.
3. Pair the receiving Switch
- On the new Switch, open HOME Menu > System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data.
- Choose the receiving option presented on that console.
- Follow the on-screen pairing instructions while keeping both systems nearby.
- Confirm the same user and software entry when the destination asks which transfer it should receive.
Nintendo varies some of the remaining screens according to the source and target system types. Use the active wording on your consoles rather than guessing a button name from a different model or software version.

4. Wait for completion and understand the deletion
- Leave both consoles on the transfer screens until Nintendo reports that the process has finished.
- Do not close the software, power off either console or move one out of range while the transfer is running.
- Remember that the selected save is deleted from the original Switch after a successful send. This is a move, not a duplicate backup.
Nintendo’s support documentation describes this as transferring the selected save and removing it from the source. Do not reset, format, trade in or otherwise dispose of the old console until you have verified the destination.
5. Verify the result in Ocarina of Time
- Open Nintendo 64 Classics on the new Switch.
- Launch Ocarina of Time using the user that received the transfer.
- Check the game’s normal save-selection screen for your expected file, progress, equipment and location.
- If the game opens without the expected progress, close it without creating a new save and review which user and software entry you selected during transfer.
Verification is important because the transfer screen and the game’s internal save screen are separate interfaces. The available Nintendo instructions do not specify whether a particular in-game save and a Nintendo 64 Suspend Point appear as separate entries in the system transfer list.
Restore Ocarina of Time from Save Data Cloud when the old Switch is unavailable
Cloud restore is the fallback when you cannot use the original console. It works only when the relevant save was backed up and you can sign in to the Nintendo Account associated with that backup.
Check the membership and backup first
- Sign in on the destination Switch with the Nintendo Account that owned the Ocarina of Time progress.
- Confirm that the account currently has Nintendo Switch Online.
- Check whether a Save Data Cloud backup is listed for the relevant software and user.
- Look at the backup timestamp. Choose the most recent date that contains the progress you need, rather than assuming the newest visible entry is correct.
Having Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack gives access to Nintendo 64 Classics, but the cloud feature itself is governed by the Nintendo Switch Online membership and the existence of a backup. A membership alone cannot restore data that was never uploaded.
Download from the software menu
- Highlight the Nintendo 64 Classics software on the HOME Menu; do not launch it.
- Press the + or – button to open the software options.
- Select Save Data Cloud.
- Choose the user whose backup you want to restore.
- Select Download Save Data, review the available backup and its timestamp, then confirm.
If your menu presents a different route, Nintendo also documents the system-settings path: System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud. Follow the options displayed for your account and software.

Nintendo warns in its Save Data Cloud download instructions: “Save data downloaded from the backup will replace the existing save data on the console for that game.” The overwritten destination data cannot be recovered through that download. If the destination already has newer progress, stop and decide which version you want before confirming.

- Open Ocarina of Time and confirm the expected in-game save.
- Do not create or overwrite a new file until you have checked that the restored progress is correct.
Why Nintendo Switch Online requirements are easy to confuse
Three separate services are involved, and each has a different requirement:
- Nearby save transfer: moves a selected save between consoles. Nintendo says an Online membership is not required.
- Save Data Cloud: stores and downloads eligible backups. An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required, and the account must have a usable backup.
- Nintendo 64 Classics access: provides Ocarina of Time on Switch. Nintendo’s Suspend Point guidance says Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is required for Nintendo 64 Classics.
Therefore, you can move the save locally without Nintendo Switch Online, but you cannot use the cloud route without the membership. Separately, you need the Expansion Pack tier to open the Nintendo 64 game library on Switch.
Save files, Suspend Points and what the transfer screen may show
Ocarina of Time in Nintendo 64 Classics has the game’s own save behavior plus the platform’s Nintendo 64 Suspend Point feature. A Suspend Point is created from the Suspend Menu and can overwrite one of four available slots. That feature is not the same thing as the game’s internal save file.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Nintendo’s available instructions do not identify which exact entry name represents Ocarina of Time in the system-level transfer list, nor do they establish whether a particular in-game save and a Suspend Point are exposed as separate transferable entries. Use the list displayed on your consoles, and verify the actual game progress after either method. Do not assume that seeing a Suspend Point automatically proves that every in-game save has moved.
Moving from Nintendo Switch to Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo supports some save-data compatibility between Switch and Switch 2, but compatibility is software-dependent. A Switch 2 destination may therefore work for Ocarina of Time while another title has different requirements. Before starting, inspect the specific software entry and transfer options on both consoles.
The same practical precautions apply: use the same Nintendo Account, keep the systems updated and nearby for a direct transfer, or confirm a cloud backup before choosing the cloud route. Do not infer compatibility for every game from the fact that one title transfers successfully.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The transfer menu does not show Ocarina of Time
- Confirm that you selected the user who actually played the game.
- Check that Nintendo 64 Classics is installed or available on the source and destination.
- Update both consoles and reopen System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data.
- Look for the relevant software entry as displayed rather than searching only for a particular wording.
The consoles cannot pair
- Reconnect both systems to the internet.
- Move them closer together and remove obstacles that could interrupt the local connection.
- Ensure both users are linked to the same Nintendo Account.
- Restart the transfer screens and follow the current prompts on both consoles.
The cloud option is missing
- Check that the signed-in account has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Use the account that originally owned the save.
- Verify that the software and user have an existing cloud backup. Not every title or account state is eligible for cloud backup.
- If the membership ended, consider Nintendo’s 180-day resubscription window for restoring access to prior backups.
The downloaded save is not the progress you expected
- Reopen the cloud screen and compare the backup timestamp with the date you last played.
- Confirm that you restored the correct user.
- Check whether the expected progress was in an in-game save or only in a Suspend Point.
- Do not download another backup over the destination until you have identified which timestamp is correct.
The source console no longer has the save after a nearby transfer
This is expected behavior for Nintendo’s nearby save transfer: the selected source save is deleted when it is sent. That is why verification on the destination should happen before you reset or dispose of the old console.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Safe order of operations
- Keep the old Switch intact until the new system launches Ocarina of Time with the expected progress.
- Prefer nearby transfer when the old console works, because it moves the current save directly and does not depend on a cloud backup.
- Use cloud restore only after checking the account, membership and backup timestamp.
- Before confirming a cloud download, decide whether the destination currently contains data you need; the download replaces it.
- Only after verification should you reset, sell, trade in or delete data from the old console.
