There is no universal way to transfer a save from an original game to its remaster. Some remasters load the old save, some require a specific import or cross-save feature, and others do not support the original save at all. Check the publisher’s instructions for the exact game and platform pair, back up the original save using a supported method, and verify the result before replacing or deleting anything.
First, find out whether your exact save is compatible
“Remaster” does not guarantee a shared save format. Confirm the original game, remaster edition, source platform, and destination platform. A PC storefront-to-storefront move, for example, is a different pairing from a PS4 original to a PS5 remaster.

Look for the publisher’s official support page for that precise combination. It should clarify whether the remaster supports direct save loading, an in-game import, account-based cross-save, or no transfer. A console’s general data-transfer feature can move supported files, but it cannot make an incompatible game save readable.

- Incompatible: Bethesda says saves from the original The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion are not supported in Oblivion Remastered, so progress cannot be transferred. Bethesda Support.
- Compatible, with a change to progression: CD PROJEKT RED says existing The Witcher 3 saves work in its Remastered version, but skills reset because the skill system was overhauled. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered FAQ.
- Cross-save for a specific platform pair: Square Enix documents PS4/PS5 Cross Save for Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song Remastered, requiring the same PSN account; it says saves are not compatible between other platforms. Square Enix Support Centre.
- A bonus rather than a campaign transfer: Square Enix says Final Fantasy VII Remake does not carry over levels or items from a prior save. Its title-screen “SAVE DATA BONUS” feature can grant specified summon materia bonuses when it detects qualifying save data. Square Enix’s Japanese FAQ.
Back up the original before attempting a transfer
Use the backup or cloud option supported by the source platform, and keep the original save intact until you have confirmed the remaster loaded the expected progress. Avoid deleting or replacing existing data unless the game’s own instructions explicitly require it. Save operations can overwrite a destination slot, and a general transfer feature does not supply a backup of an incompatible file.

Use the transfer method the game or platform specifies
In-game import or direct save loading
If the publisher says the remaster accepts an original save, follow its instructions for where and when to select that save. Do not assume that simply placing a file in a destination folder will work; save locations and formats vary by game and platform.
Cross-save between PS4 and PS5 in Romancing SaGa
- On the source PS4 or PS5, launch Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song Remastered and choose Cross Save from the title screen.
- Upload the save while signed in to the PSN account you will use on the other console.
- Launch the game on the destination console using that same account, choose Cross Save from the title screen, and download the save.
Square Enix documents this flow for PS4 and PS5 only. Its FAQ says trophies do not transfer, and it does not support save compatibility between other platforms.

Moving PS4 saves to a PS5 console
Sony documents three routes for supported data: console-to-console transfer, downloading from cloud storage for PlayStation Plus members, or copying PS4 saved data via USB. These are platform transfer options, not a fix for a save that the remaster itself does not support. Sony’s transfer instructions.
For the USB route, copy PS4 saved data from the source console to a USB drive, then copy it to the PS5. Sony says the drive should be formatted as FAT or exFAT, not as USB extended storage; not all USB devices work. If same-game data is already on the PS5, the USB copy can replace it. Check what the remaster actually carries over
A successful load does not necessarily preserve every progression detail. The Witcher 3 FAQ notes that skills reset in its Remastered version despite save compatibility. In Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song Remastered, Square Enix says trophies must be earned again. Check the game’s own notes for changes to levels, inventory, skills, quests, bonuses, and achievements rather than treating “save transfer” as a promise that everything is identical.
Once the remaster loads, confirm the character, save slot, and expected checkpoint or chapter. Keep the source save until you have verified the destination version and any important progression that the publisher says should carry over.

If the transfer does not work
- Recheck that the original and remaster editions, platforms, and platform generations match the publisher’s stated compatibility.
- Confirm you used the required account and the game’s named import or cross-save option, if applicable.
- Check whether the source save was uploaded or copied successfully and whether you selected the correct save slot on the destination.
- Do not repeatedly overwrite saves or delete source data while troubleshooting. Restore from your supported backup if the destination contains the wrong save.
- If the publisher says the formats are incompatible, a USB drive or cloud transfer will not convert the save; contact the game’s support channel if you think your case differs from its published guidance.
