To transfer PS5 screenshots or gameplay videos to a PC, copy them from the console’s Media Gallery to a FAT- or exFAT-formatted USB drive, then connect that drive to your computer. This method transfers captures—not saved game data or arbitrary files.
Transfer PS5 captures to a PC with a USB drive
- Use a commercially available USB drive formatted as FAT or exFAT. Do not configure it as PS5 USB extended storage for this task. PlayStation notes that not every USB device is compatible with the console (PlayStation USB storage support).
- Connect the drive to the PS5 and confirm the console recognizes it.
- From Games home, open Media Gallery, then select the screenshot or video you want. Use Select Multiple if you want to choose several captures.
- Open More (…) and choose Copy to USB Drive. This is PlayStation’s documented export path (PS5 captures and screenshots support).
- Disconnect the drive using the console’s available controls, connect it to your PC, and copy the files using your computer’s file manager.
What can—and cannot—be transferred this way?
PlayStation’s USB export supports screenshots and video clips. It does not allow PS5 saved data to be copied from the console to a USB drive. If you mean save files, this capture-export method will not do what you need; PlayStation’s Data Transfer feature is for moving supported data from a PS4 or PS5 to a destination PS5, not exporting files to a PC (PS4 and PS5 data transfer support).
Other ways to get captures off the console
PlayStation App
If Capture Upload is available and enabled for your account and region, eligible captures can be downloaded through PlayStation App. PlayStation’s India support page says supported uploads include screenshots and non-4K gameplay clips shorter than three minutes. It lists a maximum video resolution of 1920×1080 and says captures remain available in the app for 14 days after creation; select Download in the app to save one to your device. Availability and rollout may differ by region, and this is not a general route for every recording or file (PS5 captures in PlayStation App).
Choose the route that fits
| Route | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| FAT or exFAT USB drive | Directly copying PS5 screenshots and videos for access on a PC | Only captures can be exported this way; USB device compatibility varies. |
| PlayStation App | Downloading eligible recent captures to a device | Supported captures only; the cited regional support page limits videos to non-4K and under three minutes, with 14-day availability. |
| PS5 Data Transfer | Moving supported data between PlayStation consoles | The destination is another PS5, not a PC. |
Capture format and quality can vary
Capture settings affect the files you’ll find on the PC. PlayStation’s 2020 FAQ documented manual video recording at 1080p by default, up to 60 frames per second, with 4K recording available when connected to a 4K-capable TV. It also listed screenshots as JPEG or PNG at 1920×1080 or 3840×2160. These are specifications from that 2020 FAQ, not a guarantee of current defaults or settings on every PS5 (PlayStation: PS5—The Ultimate FAQ).
