To move to a new Xbox, sign in on the destination console with the Microsoft account that owns your games and connect it to the internet. Supported save data stored in Xbox Connected Storage can roam between Xbox One and later consoles, and Xbox documents cloud-save transfers between Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Installed game files are a separate problem: an existing USB 3.1 drive can make a game library accessible on Series X|S, while a Series X|S expansion card adds storage using the console’s custom SSD performance. A Series S cannot use physical game discs.
The safest plan is to verify the account and a known save before changing anything on the old console. Then decide whether you need to download games again, reuse an external library, or buy additional storage. These are related decisions, but they are not one universal transfer operation.

What actually transfers: saves, game files and ownership
“Transfer my games” can mean three different things. Treating them separately prevents the most common mistake: assuming that copying an installed game also copies its saves or ownership.
| Data or entitlement | How it follows you | What the documented guidance establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Supported game saves | Cloud-based Connected Storage associated with your account | Microsoft Game Development Kit documentation says per-user Connected Storage roams across Xbox One and later consoles. Xbox’s backward-compatibility guidance says saves can transfer between Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S through the cloud. |
| Installed game files | Redownload on the new console or use compatible external storage | Xbox Wire’s September 2020 storage primer describes USB 3.1 storage as a way to make an existing library accessible on Series X|S. That article is from the launch period, so current drive compatibility and requirements should be checked before buying or formatting hardware. |
| Digital game ownership | Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the purchase | Ownership is account-linked and separate from moving files with a drive. A USB device does not transfer an account entitlement. |
| Physical-disc access | Depends on a console with a disc drive | Xbox identifies Series S as digital-games-only; it does not play physical discs. |
The practical result is simple: use the online account-and-cloud route for saves and access to owned games, and consider USB storage only when you want to avoid downloading an installed library again. Neither method should be described as a single, universal “migration” operation.

Before you switch consoles
Confirm the destination model
Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S do not present exactly the same storage and disc situation. The Series S is digital-only, so a disc-based library from an older console cannot be used by inserting those discs into the new machine. If physical media is part of your library, account sign-in alone does not turn a Series S into a disc console.
A Series X has a disc drive, while the Series S limitation is specifically about physical media. Make that distinction before you sell or pack away the old console. A digital entitlement can still be associated with your Microsoft account, but a disc is not converted into a digital license merely by signing in.
Identify the account that owns the games
Write down the Microsoft account used to buy or redeem the games. The destination console must be connected online and signed in with that account for account-linked ownership and cloud data to be available. If several people use the old console, identify which profile created each save; Connected Storage is described as per-user data, not a single undifferentiated console backup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not test a missing save with a different family member’s profile and then conclude that the data was lost. First match the profile used for the original progress. The game files may be visible to more than one user on the console, but the save and entitlement checks still depend on the appropriate account.
Decide whether you need installed files immediately
If your priority is progress, the cloud route is the important part. If your priority is avoiding a large download, an existing compatible USB 3.1 storage device may help make the installed library accessible on a Series X|S. These goals can be handled independently: you can sign in and let saves roam even if you download every game again, or use storage for files while saves arrive through the cloud.
Reusing a drive can save download time and bandwidth, but it is optional. A clean installation on the new console is a reasonable choice when the old library is not on external storage or when the drive’s current compatibility is uncertain.
Check current storage requirements before changing a drive
The cited Xbox Wire storage article describes launch-era behavior. It does not establish the current capacity, formatting, performance or compatibility requirements for every external drive or every title. Check the current Xbox documentation shown by your console before formatting a device, and do not assume that a drive suitable for one Xbox generation has identical behavior on another.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Keep any cable, enclosure and important non-game files with the drive until you know the destination recognizes it. A format prompt can erase contents, so never accept one simply because the console displays it during setup.
Method 1: let supported saves roam through the cloud
This is the documented path for moving progress between Xbox One and later consoles, including Xbox Series X|S. It does not require you to copy save folders manually.
- Connect the new console to the internet. Cloud synchronization cannot occur while the destination is offline.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account tied to the games and the original profile’s saves. A different account may have different ownership and Connected Storage data.
- Install or start the game on the new console. When the title uses supported Connected Storage, the console can retrieve the account’s roaming save data from the cloud.
- Allow synchronization to finish before playing through a critical checkpoint. If the game presents an on-screen synchronization notice, let that process complete rather than interrupting it.
- Open the game and verify a known point in your progress. Use a recent, recognizable save or achievement state as your check. Do not delete the old console’s local data until the new console shows the expected progress.
Before leaving the old console, launch the game while online and allow any pending save activity to complete. This gives the cloud the latest available state. The official material establishes roaming for supported Connected Storage data; it does not promise that every title, mode or locally stored setting is identical across generations.
Microsoft’s Connected Storage documentation describes this as per-user roaming data across Xbox One and later consoles. Xbox’s backward-compatibility page specifically describes cloud-save transfer between Xbox One and Series X|S. Those statements establish the cross-console capability, but the captured official guidance does not provide a reliable, current menu-by-menu troubleshooting sequence. Labels and prompts can change, so follow the instructions displayed by your console rather than a copied path from an older guide.
Method 2: make installed games available from USB storage
USB storage addresses installed files, not saves or entitlements. Xbox Wire’s September 2020 storage primer describes USB 3.1 storage as a way to make an existing game library accessible on a Series X|S console. This can be useful when the old console’s library is already on an external drive, but it is not a guarantee that every title, drive or current system software version will behave identically.
If you already have an external library drive
- Keep the drive intact until the destination is ready. Do not format it on the new console before confirming that you want to erase its contents.
- Connect it to the new Xbox and wait for the console to recognize it. Use the current on-screen storage prompts; the exact wording and available options are not fixed by the 2020 article.
- Check which installed titles are visible. The purpose of this approach is to make existing game files accessible, not to move account ownership or cloud saves.
- Sign in with the owning account and launch a title only after the drive is recognized. The account check and the file location are separate steps.
- Keep the console online for licenses, updates and cloud synchronization. A drive containing files is not a substitute for signing in.
If a title is not listed, do not repeatedly disconnect and reconnect the drive while a game is running. Close the game, follow the storage prompt currently shown by Xbox, and verify whether the title is compatible with the destination. Reinstalling may be the simplest fallback when the old installation cannot be recognized, but the cloud-save process remains independent.
If you are buying or preparing a drive
Use “Xbox-compatible external hard drive” only as a general search description, not as proof that a particular model meets current requirements. The available source identifies USB 3.1 storage in the Series X|S launch-era context but does not establish a current universal capacity, format or model list. Verify those details in current Xbox documentation before purchasing or reformatting.

Formatting can erase a drive. If the device contains the only copy of a game installation or other files, back up anything important before accepting a console format prompt. Because current menu instructions are not established in the captured guidance, this article deliberately does not give a supposedly exact storage-menu sequence.

Xbox Wire’s storage primer describes the dedicated Series X|S expansion card as additional storage with the console’s custom SSD performance. That makes it a different category from a general USB library drive: it is presented as an expansion option designed around Series X|S storage performance, not as a way to transfer ownership or cloud saves.
- Use it when your objective is more local storage on a Series X|S console.
- Keep the account sign-in and cloud-save process separate; the card does not carry a user’s Connected Storage data.
- Confirm current card compatibility, capacity and availability before purchase. The cited storage description comes from the 2020 launch period.
The expansion card is an optional hardware expense, not a requirement for migration. If you are comfortable downloading games again, the new console’s internal storage may be sufficient. If you already own a USB library drive, compare its current compatibility and convenience before paying for another accessory. No specific price or model recommendation is established here, and prices and availability can change.
Comparing the three practical routes
| Route | Best for | What it does not do | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud and account sign-in | Moving supported saves and accessing digital ownership | It does not instantly copy installed game files | Use the same profile and stay online while synchronization completes. |
| Existing USB 3.1 storage | Making an installed library accessible on Series X|S | It does not move saves or grant licenses | Verify current drive requirements and avoid accidental formatting. |
| Series X|S expansion card | Adding local storage with the console’s custom SSD performance | It does not replace account sign-in or cloud synchronization | Check current compatibility, capacity, availability and price before buying. |
| Fresh download | Anyone without a usable external library | It does not by itself select the correct profile or prove a save synced | Keep the console online and verify progress in the game. |
Choosing the right approach
| Your situation | Primary action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Moving from Xbox One to Xbox Series X | Connect the Series X online and sign in with the original Microsoft account | Supported Connected Storage saves can roam, and Xbox documents cloud-save transfer between these generations. |
| Moving from Xbox One to Xbox Series S | Use the same online account-and-cloud process; plan for digital ownership | Series S is digital-only and does not play physical discs. |
| You want progress but do not mind downloading games again | Use cloud synchronization; install titles as needed | Saves and installed files are separate. |
| You already have an external game library | Investigate compatible USB 3.1 storage | Xbox Wire describes making an existing library accessible on Series X|S, subject to current requirements. |
| You need more ongoing Series X|S storage | Check the current dedicated expansion-card options | The launch-era storage primer describes additional storage with custom SSD performance. |
| Your library is mainly on physical discs and the destination is Series S | Choose a digital-access plan or a destination with a disc drive | Series S cannot play those discs. |
What not to assume
A USB drive does not migrate saves
The storage device carries installed game files. Save roaming is described through account-linked Connected Storage and the cloud. If a game opens without your progress, moving the installation again is unlikely to solve the underlying account or synchronization issue.
Copying files does not transfer ownership
The destination still needs the Microsoft account associated with the purchase or redemption. A drive can make files available, but it cannot grant another account access to a game.

Every title and drive is not covered by one historical setup
The USB guidance comes from Xbox Wire’s September 2020 launch-period storage article. Treat it as evidence that the approach exists, not as a current guarantee for every title, drive format, capacity or system software version.
Series S is not a disc reader
Xbox’s backward-compatibility guidance identifies Series S as digital-games-only. Do not bring a disc library expecting the new console to validate or install those discs.

A local copy is not a second cloud backup
Keeping the old console or a USB drive untouched is a safety precaution while you verify the destination. It is not a substitute for cloud synchronization and does not create a new account backup. Leave the old data in place until the new console opens a recognizable save.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting without risking your old progress
The game starts without the expected save
- Check that the destination is online.
- Sign out and confirm that the profile is the same Microsoft account used on the old console.
- Close and reopen the game after any synchronization prompt has completed.
- Confirm that the old console was online recently enough to upload the latest progress.
- Do not delete local data on the old console while the destination is still unverified.
- If the title still shows no progress, consult the current Xbox support instructions for that game and console version; the available official material does not publish a single dependable recovery sequence.
The external drive is not recognized
- Do not accept a format prompt if you need the existing contents and have not confirmed what it will erase.
- Recheck current Xbox storage requirements and compatibility for the drive.
- Try the account-and-cloud route independently so that a storage problem does not become confused with a save problem.
- Check whether the console sees some titles but not others; that can indicate a title or compatibility issue rather than a missing account.
A disc-based game will not work on the new console
First check whether the destination is a Series S. Its digital-only design means the disc itself is not playable there. This is a hardware-format limitation, not evidence that the cloud save failed.
You cannot find a current network-transfer menu
Do not rely on a guessed menu path. The captured official Xbox material explains cloud saves and storage concepts but does not document the exact current network-transfer enablement sequence. Use the labels shown by your console or current Xbox Support guidance rather than reproducing an outdated instruction.
You are unsure whether to buy storage
Do not buy hardware solely to move saves; the documented save route is account-based. Consider a USB drive when avoiding a large re-download matters and you can verify compatibility. Consider an expansion card when you want additional Series X|S storage and its current cost and availability fit your budget. Either purchase remains optional for a basic account-and-cloud migration.
A safe migration checklist
- Identify the Microsoft account and profile that own the games and created the saves.
- Confirm whether the destination is Xbox Series X or Series S.
- Connect the destination online before opening transferred or newly installed games.
- Launch important games on the old console while online so recent progress has an opportunity to synchronize.
- Let supported Connected Storage data synchronize before judging whether progress transferred.
- Keep the old console and any external drive unchanged until a known save is verified.
- Use USB storage only for installed-library access, and verify current requirements before formatting or buying hardware.
- Consider a dedicated Series X|S expansion card only as an additional-storage option, after checking current compatibility, capacity, availability and price.
- Remember that neither an external drive nor an expansion card transfers digital ownership or replaces cloud synchronization.
- If the destination is Series S, separate digital purchases from any library that exists only on discs.
Bottom line for Xbox One, Series X and Series S owners
The dependable core of the move is account-based: connect the new Xbox, sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the games, and allow supported cloud saves to roam. USB 3.1 storage can be useful for making an existing installed library accessible on Series X|S, but it is optional and separate from saves and ownership. A dedicated Series X|S expansion card is an additional-storage choice, while Series S owners must plan for an all-digital library because physical discs do not work on that console.

Can I move installed games without downloading everything again?
Possibly. Xbox Wire’s September 2020 storage guidance describes USB 3.1 storage making an existing library accessible on Series X|S. Check current compatibility and requirements; this does not transfer saves or ownership.
Does a USB drive transfer my saves or digital purchases?
No. The drive is for installed game files. Saves use account-linked Connected Storage and the cloud, while digital ownership remains associated with the purchasing Microsoft account.
Can I use Xbox game discs on a Series S?
No. Xbox identifies Series S as a digital-games-only console, so it does not play physical discs. A disc-based library requires a console with a disc drive or a separate digital entitlement.
Do I need an expansion card to migrate to Series X or Series S?
No. An expansion card is optional additional storage. Xbox Wire describes it as providing Series X|S storage with the console’s custom SSD performance, but it does not replace account sign-in or cloud-save synchronization.
Should I format my old external drive when I connect it to the new Xbox?
Not automatically. A format prompt can erase the drive. Keep the existing contents until you confirm what the prompt will do and verify current Xbox requirements. If the files matter, back them up before formatting.
What should I do if my progress is missing on the new Xbox?
Confirm the console is online and that you signed in with the exact profile used on the old console. Let any synchronization prompt finish, reopen the game, and keep the old console’s local data intact until the save is verified. For a title-specific failure, use current Xbox support instructions because there is no single dependable recovery sequence documented here.
The Bottom Line
Sign in online with the original Microsoft account first: supported saves follow through Connected Storage. Use USB storage only for installed files, consider an expansion card only for extra Series X|S capacity, and remember that Series S cannot play physical discs.
