Usually, no. You do not need to clear every side quest before a final mission unless that specific game warns that content will close, ties quests to an ending, or removes post-finale access. Treat the finale as a game-specific checkpoint: read its warning, identify the quests you care about, and make a separate save before committing.
There is no universal rule
“Side quest” covers several different kinds of content. One optional mission may change an ending, another may unlock a reward or companion scene, and a third may remain available indefinitely. The final mission can therefore be harmless in one game and permanently missable in another.

Post-finale behavior is just as varied. Some games return you to a pre-finale state or open a free-roam mode after the credits. Others treat a particular ending as the end of the protagonist’s story and do not restore the world. A warning that says “point of no return” tells you that a transition is important; it does not, by itself, tell you whether the lockout is temporary or permanent.
What a point-of-no-return warning really means
When the game displays a warning, stop and read the wording rather than clicking through automatically. Look for three separate questions:

- What closes now? The notice may refer to quests, regions, activities, or only the current story sequence.
- When can I play again? Some finales return you to free exploration after the credits; others load a post-story state, a pre-finale save, or nothing at all.
- What can change? A quest might affect an ending, provide context, or simply become unavailable without changing the conclusion.
The same label can describe very different consequences. In Cyberpunk 2077, an on-screen “Point of No Return” warning appears before the finale. A game-specific guide reports that some side missions can affect the ending, while other activities can be left unfinished without changing it. That is useful evidence for Cyberpunk 2077, not a rule for every role-playing game.
Decide what to do before entering the finale
Use this sequence whenever you reach a final-mission prompt or a late-story checkpoint.
1. Read the exact warning
Do not infer the result from the mission’s name or from how dramatic the scene looks. Confirm whether the game says that quests or areas become unavailable, whether it promises a return after the story, and whether it offers to create a save. If the wording is vague, assume only that the next section may be difficult to reverse—not that every side quest is automatically lost.
2. Check the quests that matter to you
Make a short list instead of trying to complete an arbitrary percentage of the map. Prioritize missions that:

- Are explicitly described as affecting, unlocking, or adding context to an ending.
- Belong to a character or faction whose story you want to finish.
- Give a unique item, ability, companion outcome, or other reward you would regret missing.
- Are listed by a current, game-specific missables guide as ending at the upcoming checkpoint.
Map-clearing activities with no story, ending, or unique-reward connection can usually wait when the game provides a reliable way back.
3. Separate a temporary lockout from a permanent miss
A finale can lock the world while you play its final sequence and then restore exploration. It can also move the story to an irreversible ending state. The distinction is often visible only in the game’s post-credits behavior or in documentation for that exact mission and edition.
4. Make a separate manual save
Create a clearly named save before accepting the final sequence—for example, “Before finale—side quests.” Keep it separate from your normal rotating saves. This gives you a route back if the game does not restore the pre-finale world. It is a precaution, not a promise: some games restrict save loading around endings, and a save cannot recover content that was already missed earlier.

Which side quests deserve priority?
Quests with ending consequences
These are the highest priority because their value cannot be recreated by ordinary post-game exploration. A quest may unlock an ending route, alter who appears, or supply information that changes how the finale reads. The fact that a mission is optional does not mean its outcome is irrelevant.
Quests that close at a story checkpoint
Some missions disappear when the main story changes a region, faction, or political situation. A current missables guide should identify these by the checkpoint that ends them. Do not rely on a generic “all side quests” list from a different release; late patches, expansions, and editions can change availability.
Character and world-story quests
Even when a quest does not alter the ending, it may be the last chance to complete a companion’s arc or understand a location before the finale. These are subjective priorities, so use your own list rather than a completion percentage.

Repeatable or map-cleanup activities
Collectibles, repeatable contracts, and ordinary exploration are lower priority when the game confirms post-finale access. They become urgent only if the warning names their region or if a game-specific source identifies them as permanently missable.

How different games handle the final transition
The following examples show why advice must stay tied to a particular title and checkpoint.
| Game or situation | What is established | What a player should do |
|---|---|---|
| Cyberpunk 2077 finale | An on-screen “Point of No Return” warning appears. Some side missions can affect the ending; other activities may be left undone without ending consequences. | Review ending-related missions, create a manual save, and verify the outcome for the ending route you intend to see. |
| Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, The Tower ending | CD PROJEKT RED Support says returning to the point of no return after The Tower ending would create an “uncanny narrative experience.” The epilogue provides no rewards, so the game and V’s story are allowed to end. | Do not assume this ending returns you to ordinary pre-finale play. Finish any content you want before committing. |
| Final Fantasy XVI | A story checkpoint can make some earlier side quests unavailable. The game also offers post-story free roam and replay options for other content. | Complete quests marked as ending at the checkpoint; postpone the rest only when the game’s post-story options cover what you want. |
| Avowed, “Ancient Soil” | A game-specific guide recommends finishing outstanding side missions in Dawnshore and Emerald Stair before entering the underground Godless Ruin. It also recommends saving before the Garden if you want to see the ending first and then return to unfinished quests. | Treat the named locations and the Garden as separate decision points; keep a save before the transition. |
| Horizon Forbidden West | A guide reports that players can continue exploring and complete side quests after the final mission. | You can defer ordinary side content when that post-finale behavior matches your goal, while still checking for quests tied to a specific earlier checkpoint. |
These examples are not interchangeable. A post-game free-roam report for one title cannot prove that another title will restore your world, and a warning in one series does not identify every missable quest in another.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Temporary lockout versus permanent missability
Temporary lockout
The finale may suspend normal exploration while the last sequence runs, then return you to a world state where unfinished missions remain. A post-story free-roam or replay option can make this safe for ordinary cleanup. You should still complete quests that affect the ending before the finale, because post-game access does not necessarily rewind their narrative consequences.
Permanent missability
A quest is permanently missable when a checkpoint removes it and the game offers no practical way to return to its earlier state. The usual recovery is a manual save made before the checkpoint, an earlier autosave that still exists, a replay feature that includes the mission, or a new playthrough. If none of those exists, the only reliable prevention is completing the quest before crossing the checkpoint.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
An ending that intentionally ends the story
Some endings are designed not to return you to the pre-finale world. The official explanation for Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty’s The Tower ending is a clear example: the developer chose to let the game and V’s story end rather than create a narrative return that would feel inconsistent. This statement applies to that ending, not to every ending in the game or to games generally.
A practical completionist workflow
- At the start of the final chapter, stop accepting assumptions. Note the mission name, location, and any explicit warning.
- Make a checklist of personal priorities. Mark ending-impacting quests, character arcs, unique rewards, and region-specific missions.
- Consult current guidance for the exact checkpoint. Confirm the game, edition, platform, and patch before treating a quest as missable.
- Finish the high-risk items first. Do not spend time on low-risk collectibles while an ending-related quest remains open.
- Create and verify a manual save. Load or inspect the save slot if necessary so you know it was created before the irreversible transition.
- Enter the finale when the remaining content is acceptable to defer. Record what you intentionally left for post-game play.
- After the credits, test access before committing to cleanup. Check the map, quest log, and replay or free-roam options. If the game has not restored the content, quit without overwriting the pre-finale save.
If you already crossed the checkpoint
First, check whether the game has returned you to a free-roam state or supplied a replay option. Look for unfinished quests in the journal and visit the affected region rather than assuming they vanished. If the content is absent, check your manual and autosave slots from before the warning. A separate save is the safest recovery because it preserves the earlier world state without requiring a new run.
If no earlier save exists, identify whether the missing quest is merely unavailable in the current ending state or was permanently removed. A replay or New Game Plus mode may restore access, but its availability and carry-over rules are game-specific. Do not overwrite your oldest pre-finale slot while testing these options.

Finish the side quests that affect the ending, the ones you would personally regret losing, and any missions a current guide marks as ending at the next checkpoint. Leave routine cleanup for later only when the game clearly provides post-finale exploration or replay. When the warning is unclear, a separate save costs little and protects the choice.
