To start the Minutemen quest “With Our Powers Combined,” complete “Old Guns,” build five operational artillery pieces in total, make the Brotherhood of Steel hostile to the Minutemen, then speak with Preston Garvey. The quest sends artillery against the Prydwen; the Brotherhood’s retaliation at the Castle is the next battle.
What you need before speaking to Preston
- Complete “Old Guns.” This unlocks the Minutemen artillery plans.
- Have five operational artillery pieces. The Castle’s artillery counts toward the five. Damaged or destroyed pieces do not meet the guide’s operational requirement.
- Make the Brotherhood hostile to the Minutemen. One documented way is to attack Brotherhood personnel. Attacking aboard the Prydwen or attacking Paladin Danse are possible routes.

How to start “With Our Powers Combined”
- Finish “Old Guns” and unlock the artillery plans.
- Build artillery until five pieces are operational, counting the Castle’s. If the Brotherhood is already hostile, check the pieces again before proceeding: attacks on settlements may damage or destroy them.
- Turn the Brotherhood hostile to the Minutemen. Choosing the Danse route is consequential: the walkthrough says it also entails killing Knight Rhys and Scribe Haylen.
- Speak with Preston Garvey. With the artillery and hostility conditions met, he can begin “With Our Powers Combined.”
What happens after the trigger
The Minutemen attack
“With Our Powers Combined” coordinates an artillery strike on the Prydwen, the Brotherhood’s airship.
The Brotherhood retaliates
After the strike, Brotherhood forces attack the Castle. This leads to the Brotherhood version of “Defend the Castle.” The title can also refer to a Minutemen defense quest in the Institute storyline, so the Brotherhood retaliation is the relevant version here.

Fallout Wiki summaries also describe the quest as following “The Nuclear Option” and “Old Guns” when the Brotherhood is hostile, and as triggerable by becoming hostile after the Minutemen ending: “With Our Powers Combined” and “Commonwealth Minutemen.” Those summaries corroborate the broad conditions; the specific five-piece requirement and Preston step above come from the GameFAQs walkthrough.
