If a Minecraft LAN world is missing or won’t connect, first confirm that every player is using the same edition and a compatible game version. Then check that the devices share the same local network, the host has started a LAN-visible world, and the connection is stable. Bedrock and Java have separate LAN setup paths; Java and Bedrock players cannot directly join one another’s worlds.
1. Check edition and game version
All players need to use the same edition family: Java players join Java worlds, and Bedrock players join Bedrock worlds. They also need compatible game versions. Minecraft’s multiplayer connectivity guidance explains that Java Edition players can only join Java-hosted games; do not expect a Java client to join a Bedrock LAN world, or vice versa.
Check the edition and version on each device before changing network settings. This is especially important when a group plays across different device types: device compatibility does not make Java and Bedrock interchangeable.
2. Confirm that the devices are on the same local network
For Bedrock LAN, Minecraft’s LAN instructions require players to use the same network connection and devices that support LAN play. Check that each device is connected to the intended home network, not a guest Wi-Fi network or a separate connection that may prevent devices from reaching one another. The guest-network check is a practical way to diagnose separation; it is not a Minecraft-specific setting.

If the devices appear to be on the same Wi-Fi but still cannot see each other, verify that the connection is stable. A brief Wi-Fi drop can disrupt discovery or joining even when the world and settings are correct.
3. Make sure the host has opened a LAN-visible world
Bedrock Edition
- On the host device, open the world’s settings and enable Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players.
- Start the world and leave it open while other players connect.
- On the joining device, open the Worlds tab and look for the host world marked LAN.
These are the Bedrock steps described in Minecraft’s LAN support article. Menu details and discovery behavior can vary by platform and release.

Java Edition
Do not apply Bedrock’s world-setting procedure to Java. Minecraft’s support index lists a separate Java Edition LAN connectivity article, but detailed Java setup steps are not established here. Use the current instructions for your Java release rather than guessing at menu labels or network configuration.
4. Refresh world discovery and the connection
If the Bedrock host world does not appear in the Worlds tab, first confirm that the host is still in the started world and that LAN visibility remains enabled. Then close and reopen Minecraft on the devices. If that does not help, restart the devices and try again. Exact discovery behavior may vary by platform and release.

For a connection that appears and then drops, reduce other activity using the network and check whether the connection remains stable. Minecraft’s Java multiplayer troubleshooting guidance also suggests trying Ethernet on a fixed device instead of Wi-Fi. A wired connection is an optional diagnostic, not a requirement for every LAN game.
5. Review security software carefully
Firewall, antivirus, or VPN settings can block or slow game connections. If the edition, shared network, host settings, and connection stability all check out, review whether security software or a VPN is interfering with Minecraft traffic. Minecraft’s troubleshooting guidance discusses these factors in the context of multiplayer connectivity.

Avoid disabling protection wholesale or changing router settings without a specific reason. Minecraft’s Java troubleshooting material mentions router NAT configuration as general multiplayer guidance, but that does not establish that every local LAN problem requires a router change.

A local LAN session and an internet-hosted friend world are different connection cases. If you are trying to join someone over the internet rather than a world hosted on your local network, account multiplayer permissions and, on some consoles, an online subscription may apply. Minecraft describes those requirements in its multiplayer guidance and platform-specific multiplayer requirements. Do not treat them as universal prerequisites for a local LAN session.

Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Every player uses the same edition family and a compatible game version.
- For Bedrock, all devices are on the same local network.
- The host has started the world with Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players enabled.
- Joining Bedrock players check the Worlds tab for the world marked LAN.
- Restart Minecraft and devices if discovery fails, then check network stability and competing bandwidth use.
- Review firewall, antivirus, or VPN interference without turning off protection broadly.
- If the target is an internet-hosted world, check online multiplayer permissions separately from LAN troubleshooting.
