Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Start by identifying exactly how the failure happens, then test reversible causes in order: game requirements and files, background software, graphics compatibility, workload, heat, and finally Windows or hardware faults. A game that closes to the desktop is a different problem from a blue screen or forced restart. Record the error and timing, change one variable at a time, and use the game publisher’s support page for title-specific errors, anti-cheat requirements, and launcher instructions.
First, classify what is failing
The timing and scope of the failure determine which checks are useful. Do not treat every crash as a graphics-driver problem or every frame-rate drop as proof of defective hardware.

| What you see | What it usually indicates | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| The game never opens, or the launcher returns to the desktop | Missing or damaged files, a requirement mismatch, a launcher conflict, or an incompatible graphics component | Check requirements, available storage, and installed files |
| The game opens and closes immediately | A startup dependency, configuration, mod, overlay, or graphics API problem | Undo recent changes, close background software, and inspect DirectX information |
| The game crashes after a particular action or after several minutes | A repeatable game bug, unstable workload, heat buildup, memory pressure, or a file problem | Record the trigger and duration, then test settings, temperature, and memory clues |
| Low frame rates or regular stutter without a crash | Excessive graphics workload, background tasks, limited memory, storage pressure, or heat | Establish a baseline, lower one setting, and monitor whether the symptom changes |
| A blue screen, gray screen, or immediate reboot | A Windows, driver, or hardware-level fault rather than an ordinary game crash | Record the stop code and investigate the system separately |
Capture evidence before changing anything
Write down the exact error text, the point in the sequence where it appears, and whether the failure is reproducible. Note the storefront or launcher, game version, Windows version, CPU, graphics processor, installed memory, and free storage. Also record recent changes: a game or Windows update, graphics-driver change, new hardware, an installed mod, or a newly enabled overlay. A screenshot or phone photo of an error is more useful than a paraphrase.
Change only one setting or program at a time and retest the same scene or action. If several changes are made together, you cannot tell which one helped or introduced a new problem. Keep a short log so you can return to the last known-good state.

Check requirements, storage, and game files
Compare your PC with the publisher’s requirements
Find the game’s current minimum and recommended requirements on its official store or support page. Compare the listed CPU, graphics processor, system memory, Windows edition, and storage requirement with your computer. A machine at or just below minimum requirements may fail to launch, and meeting a minimum specification does not guarantee a particular frame rate.
Check that the operating-system edition and architecture are supported, not merely that Windows is installed. If the game has separate requirements for a graphics API, ray tracing, shader model, or solid-state storage, treat those as requirements rather than optional advice. Requirements can change after an update, so use the page for the installed version of the game.
Leave working space on the system drive
Windows needs free space for updates, temporary files, shader caches, and paging. Microsoft gives 10–15% free disk space as a general recommendation while noting that the exact need varies by configuration. This is maintenance guidance, not a promise of higher FPS. Check the drive containing Windows and the drive containing the game; a full secondary drive can prevent updates or file extraction even when the system drive has room.
Verify a Steam installation
Steam Support recommends file verification when installed content may be missing or damaged and when crashes occur. Use this sequence for the affected game:
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for the operation to finish.
- Launch the game again without making another change, then check whether the same failure returns.
Verification compares the local installation with Steam’s expected content and may redownload files. It does not repair Windows, replace a failing drive, or guarantee that a game bug is fixed. It also does not apply automatically to other launchers. For a non-Steam installation, use that platform’s own repair or verify command, or follow the game’s official support instructions; do not delete folders blindly.
Remove software conflicts before altering drivers
Close unnecessary applications
Background programs compete for CPU time, memory, disk access, and sometimes graphics overlays. Steam’s software-performance guidance recommends removing unnecessary startup programs and manually stopping unneeded applications through Task Manager. In Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, review the Processes and Startup apps views, and close only applications you recognize and do not need for the test.

Retest after closing one group of nonessential programs. Keep security software and required device services running unless the publisher or security vendor gives a specific, safe diagnostic procedure. If the crash disappears, re-enable programs one at a time to identify the conflict instead of leaving essential protection disabled.

Undo recent mods, overlays, and configuration changes
A mod, reshade, overlay, capture utility, controller mapper, or custom configuration can fail after a game update. Temporarily return the game to its unmodified state using the publisher’s documented method. Back up save files before removing user-created content, and do not assume that deleting a mod folder removes every file it changed.
Use the same approach for an overlay: disable one overlay, test, and restore it if it was not responsible. The goal is diagnosis, not a permanent instruction to disable every convenience feature.
Use launch options cautiously
Steam’s performance guidance lists -autoconfig as an initial troubleshooting step for applicable games. Launch options are game-specific: one title may ignore an option while another may interpret it differently. Apply it only when the game’s support documentation indicates that it is accepted, record the original launch settings, and remove it after the test if it has no effect.
Check DirectX and graphics compatibility
Use DxDiag to see the installed DirectX version
Microsoft’s DirectX documentation explains that DirectX supplies components that let games work with video and audio hardware. To inspect the installed version:
Recommended Free Tools
- Press Windows+R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
dxdiagand press Enter. - On the System tab, read the DirectX Version entry.
- Compare that version with the requirement published for the game.
- Use Save All Information if the game’s support team asks for a diagnostic report.
DxDiag reports what Windows currently exposes; it does not prove that every optional game component is installed or that a graphics driver is stable. If the game names a particular graphics API or driver error, follow the GPU manufacturer’s and game’s official instructions for that exact error. There is no universal driver clean-install or rollback procedure that is safe for every PC.

Interpret compatibility results carefully
If the DirectX version is below the game’s requirement, software settings cannot create the missing capability; check whether the publisher provides a supported alternative or whether the hardware and operating system need to be updated. If the version meets the requirement, continue with files, conflicts, workload, and heat rather than repeatedly reinstalling DirectX.
Diagnose low FPS and stuttering with controlled tests
Establish a reproducible baseline
Choose one repeatable location, benchmark, or gameplay action. Record the approximate frame rate, whether the hitch is periodic or random, and whether it worsens after playing for a while. Avoid comparing an uncapped menu frame rate with a demanding game scene. If the game provides a frame-time graph, use it; a regular spike pattern and a sustained low frame rate point to different causes.
Lower workload one step at a time
Temporarily lower resolution or a demanding graphics setting, then repeat the same test. A clear improvement shows that rendering workload is involved, but it does not identify which component is limiting performance. Restore settings one at a time after the test. Keep a note of each change so a later update can be compared with the same baseline.
Use the game’s own frame-rate cap or synchronization controls when testing, and avoid changing several latency or display options together. A lower setting that removes stutter is a useful diagnostic result even if you later choose a different visual compromise.
Look for memory pressure and background disk activity
Low system memory can cause repeated frame-rate hitches as data is moved between memory and storage. Task Manager can show whether memory use is close to the installed amount and whether another application is consuming an unusual share. Close nonessential programs and retest before concluding that the game or graphics processor is defective.
Watch for storage activity during a hitch, especially when a game is compiling shaders or streaming a large area. A nearly full drive, a failing drive, or an active update can create pauses that resemble a graphics problem. Keep the free-space margin described earlier and allow background installation or shader work to finish before judging steady-state performance.

Do not infer a hardware upgrade from one symptom
One game running slowly does not establish that a component must be replaced. Confirm the requirement, reproduce the symptom with background tasks controlled, and compare the effect of a lower workload. If many unrelated games show the same deterioration together with heat, memory errors, crashes, or stop codes, escalate as a possible system problem instead of buying a part based on an isolated FPS observation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInvestigate heat and ventilation
Recognize heat-related patterns
Performance that declines after several minutes, fans that become unusually loud, a hot case, or stuttering that precedes a crash can point to heat or restricted airflow. Steam’s hardware guidance identifies poor ventilation and dust on vents, fans, and heatsinks as possible contributors to overheating. These signs are clues, not a temperature diagnosis.
Inspect without unsafe disassembly
Shut the PC down, disconnect power as directed by the device maker, and inspect external vents for blockage. Keep the computer on a hard surface with room around intake and exhaust openings. Do not open a laptop or disassemble a desktop power supply merely to troubleshoot a game. Follow the manufacturer’s service instructions and warranty conditions; if you cannot clean safely, use a qualified technician.
Use cleaning tools only for visible dust
An electric air duster or similar PC-cleaning tool is relevant only when dust accumulation or blocked airflow is actually present. Use it according to the computer manufacturer’s instructions, prevent fans from spinning freely if those instructions require it, and protect nearby components from static or moisture. Cleaning is not a general remedy for launch errors and should not be presented as an FPS guarantee.

What a blue screen or forced restart means
A blue screen, gray screen, or immediate reboot is a system-level signal. Steam distinguishes this from an ordinary game or launcher failure, and Microsoft explains that a stop error can arise from a driver, hardware, or Windows problem. The game may expose the fault because it creates a heavy workload, but reinstalling the game alone is unlikely to resolve it.
Record the stop code and sequence
Write down the stop code, any named driver, and whether the PC restarted automatically. Note whether the failure occurs only under 3D load, after warming up, or during unrelated tasks. Check whether the same behavior appears in another demanding game or application. Preserve Windows diagnostic information requested by the PC or motherboard manufacturer rather than deleting logs.

Know when to escalate
Repeated stop codes, abnormal temperatures, suspected failing storage or memory, burning smells, or uncertainty about physical cleaning justify contacting the PC maker, motherboard maker, or a qualified technician. Advanced dump analysis can be difficult for general users. Avoid speculative registry edits, random stress tests, and unverified driver packages, which can make the system less stable or destroy useful evidence.
Symptom-specific playbooks
Why won’t my game launch?
- Confirm the PC meets the current minimum requirements and has free space on both the system and game drives.
- Undo a recently installed mod, overlay, driver, or hardware change.
- Close unnecessary applications and startup tasks through Task Manager.
- Verify the installation using the launcher’s documented repair feature; for Steam, use Verify integrity of game files.
- Run DxDiag and compare the DirectX version with the title’s requirement.
- Check the game’s support page for a title-specific error, launcher dependency, or supported startup option.
If the game still never opens, save the exact error and the steps already tried before contacting the publisher. That record prevents support from sending you through the same checks repeatedly.
Why does my game crash on startup?
Startup-only crashes often involve configuration, an overlay, a mod, a missing file, or a graphics API mismatch. Return to an unmodified configuration, test with nonessential background software closed, verify files, and inspect DxDiag. If the crash began immediately after an update, check the publisher’s current incident or patch guidance rather than assuming the PC changed.

Use one repeatable scene, record a baseline, close background tasks, and lower one graphics setting or the resolution temporarily. Check memory and disk activity during a hitch and look for worsening after heat builds. Restore settings methodically once the limiting factor is understood; a single universal tweak cannot correct every source of stutter.
Why does my PC restart when I play a game?
Treat an automatic reboot as a system investigation. Record any stop code, check for heat and blocked airflow, and see whether another demanding application triggers the same behavior. Repeated reboots require Windows, driver, hardware, or manufacturer support—not only game-file verification.
When to stop troubleshooting yourself
- The PC repeatedly blue-screens or restarts, especially outside the game.
- Temperatures or fan behavior are abnormal and you cannot safely inspect the device.
- The computer shows memory, storage, power, or display faults in more than one application.
- A physical repair, laptop opening, or component replacement would be required.
- The publisher’s documented steps are exhausted and the error is reproducible.
At that point, provide the support team with the game version, Windows version, hardware specifications, exact error or stop code, reproduction steps, recent changes, and the results of file verification and DxDiag. This is more actionable than reporting only that the game crashes.
Quick Recap
A compact troubleshooting checklist
- Classify the symptom: launch failure, immediate exit, in-game crash, stutter, low FPS, blue screen, or reboot.
- Capture exact text, timing, version information, hardware, free space, and recent changes.
- Compare the PC with the game’s current requirements.
- Check free space; Microsoft gives 10–15% as a general Windows recommendation, with the exact need varying by configuration.
- Repair or verify files through the relevant launcher.
- Close unnecessary applications and startup tasks, then test one change at a time.
- Use DxDiag to check DirectX and compare it with the title’s documented needs.
- For stutter, test a lower workload and inspect memory, disk activity, and heat clues.
- For dust or blocked airflow, clean only as the device maker permits.
- For blue screens or forced restarts, record stop codes and escalate as a Windows or hardware issue.
